American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Friday, 6 November 2020 07:00 (five years ago)

are GOP pollwatchers putting up bullshit challenges to every single vote? is that the real reason why it's taking so long?

Wayne Grotski (symsymsym), Friday, 6 November 2020 07:02 (five years ago)

God the conspiracy theorist crowd is never going to shut up about this election being rigged huh

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 6 November 2020 07:03 (five years ago)

Mail ballots take longer to process because:

They don’t end up at the counting centers all at once
They don’t even have to have arrived yet, as of now, to be counted, in some places, so long as the postmark is on time
Signatures have to be verified against the ones on file
Human hands have to pull the ballots out of the envelopes and prepare them for scanning
Ballots with any unscannable votes have to be set aside and adjudicated for voter intent
Ballots with any other defects may be challenged, adjudicated, and cured
Individual election authorities may only release tallies once a day at prescheduled times

WA’s voter intent guide makes for fun reading!

apologies for tweet posting, the image would not embed on its own. THIS is what I have been distracting myself at work doing.

Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Friday, 6 November 2020 07:18 (five years ago)

Dammit, they're gonna call it while I'm at work tomorrow, aren't they?

Also, good to have you back in the thread Karl. Your presence has been missed.

Fetchboy, Friday, 6 November 2020 07:23 (five years ago)

One of my high school classmates is a Gold Star mother for whom every falling leaf etc is a message from her dead son killed in Helmand and she just cannot believe the American public is rejecting FREEDOM. She travels the country talking to chuds about guns and jeebus and how every military death pays for YOUR FREEDOM so her page today is maximum lurker schadenfreude. Apparently, she will shortly be leaving Minnesota to the socialists.

I think she was counting on the great exurban repudiation of BLM to deliver FREEDOM but Minnesotans in their thousands are more clever and more empathetic than her bubble of reformed high school burnouts and Sturgis bikers.

My God, they’re really taking their time. But good to see Georgia almost there after some doubt before I went to sleep. Good morning to Americans still up.

ICYMI, very amusing thread.

Since we're celebrating #TheCount today, never forget that, in 1988, scheming Ronald Grump conned Oscar out of his home and built "Grump Tower" out of trashcans and human shit in the middle of @SesameStreet. The furious residents threw Ronald in the trash and ran him out of town. pic.twitter.com/tBE1qoDS6z

there is a nonzero chance they reported at 665 because if the gap was 666 qanon would explode

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Friday, 6 November 2020 08:30 (five years ago)

I was thinking similar when I heard that unremarkable number on the radio earlier

calzino, Friday, 6 November 2020 08:32 (five years ago)

463

Trump's Georgia lead was 30,000 this morning. It's now a little over 400.

@oneposter (✔️) (sic), Friday, 6 November 2020 08:43 (five years ago)

xp!

I could look away whenever the gold plating reached danger levels.

@oneposter (✔️) (sic), Friday, 6 November 2020 08:52 (five years ago)

I wouldn’t take the bet that the dumps in Philadelphia are the more devastating and destructive tbh.

liberté, égalité, scampé (gyac), Friday, 6 November 2020 08:53 (five years ago)

xps Also nonzero chance that the PA will switch at 6.66M counted votes? :-D

anatol_merklich, Friday, 6 November 2020 08:57 (five years ago)

It sounds like PA might be won by more than 1% unlike Georgia. There will be no cognitive dissonance amongst Trump mobs switching from chanting Stop The Count to Start The Recount!

calzino, Friday, 6 November 2020 08:59 (five years ago)

Morning USA. Woke up, certain that overnight there would have been some significant movement, more fool me.

CNN has this kind of night shift, low energy vibe right now with two relaxed anchors having the same cyclical conversation.

I've got a mental picture of Georgian ballot-counting machines like something from the Flintstones with two little purple birds inside and lots of string pulleys.

Maresn3st, Friday, 6 November 2020 09:13 (five years ago)

Georgia flipped

@oneposter (✔️) (sic), Friday, 6 November 2020 09:30 (five years ago)

917 ahead

@oneposter (✔️) (sic), Friday, 6 November 2020 09:30 (five years ago)

I presume as 99% of votes have been counted it will be blue within a 1% margin + Trump will be calling for a recount?

calzino, Friday, 6 November 2020 09:33 (five years ago)

where are you seeing this? NYT doesn't have it

Welcome to the 'magic hour' of the thread, when the Americans are all asleep and everyone else can snark about how insanely stupid their electoral system is. (Brit here, glass houses and all that I admit)

logout option: disabled (Matt #2), Friday, 6 November 2020 09:43 (five years ago)

the Americans are all awake and find it exponentially more stupid than you do

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Friday, 6 November 2020 09:46 (five years ago)

what's wrong with knowing the results before the elections are even run? that's what they do in good and healthy countries

||||||||, Friday, 6 November 2020 09:48 (five years ago)

Hooray! Happened while I was pulverising something orange with a hand blender, zzzzzzzzzt!

scampopo (suzy), Friday, 6 November 2020 09:48 (five years ago)

xp I was gonna say, even the Americans that benefit from the electoral system probably find it stupid

Vinnie, Friday, 6 November 2020 09:49 (five years ago)

Having fun translating US electoral system into British terms, like Greater London would be one state with a heavy electoral college weighting, South Lincolnshire (Buttlick, Nebraska for cultural translation purposes) another, with a much smaller weighting... but get this, the house of lords is way more powerful and Greater London and South Lincolnshire have the same representation in it lol
