Re: posts from YMP and tipsy mothra, of course the parties aren't the same. One is a socially liberal, economically neoliberal party that at least pretends to be on the side of the population, though also spends a lot of time enriching corporations. The other is a socially fascistic, economically neoliberal party that exists for the sole purpose of enriching corporations and making life miserable for anyone who isn't rich and white.

The commonality between the two parties is large enough that sometimes it becomes easy to become frustrated and conflate then. I understand that frustration in myself, and I understand it in a lot of other people.

The other issue is related to the representational politics that have been talked about a bit in this thread already, but many people on the left (and perhaps some of those minorities who went for Trump) are tired of representational politics standing in for actual substantive work on major issues. That is, we're tired of being seen as a guaranteed vote and not receiving much in return.

So, you take those two huge issues, and I think it's pretty easy to understand why people get so goddamn frustrated with Dems and don't trust them at all.

there are some differences at the local level that will make for strange bedfellows at times though.

sarahell, Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:28 (five years ago)

plus the issue of their declining to take obvious, popular, and achievable actions to improve the country or stop the opposition, some of which is explained by the other reasons but not all

and the shit rolls downhill -- so you end up with local governments being blamed for the ass sucking nature at the federal level, etc.

But then we have to think about who was in power when, let's say, parts of the Bay Area were sold wholesale to Chinese LLCs and techies. Sure, it was easier to get food stamps, and getting stuff done at City Hall was great, but...

getting stuff done at City Hall was great, but...

lol ... very little gets done there ... oh unless you are talking about San Francisco, the functional city

sarahell, Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:36 (five years ago)

Love how three weeks ago the NY Post was all "We have the scoop that will change the election!" and now is just clowning on the failson on 'their' side instead.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:36 (five years ago)

And before I get pushback on that, a huge number of properties were purchased sight unseen by Chinese LLCs in Oakland in the late aughts and early teens. My husband is Hong Kong Chinese, and he would agree with me on my characterization of that dynamic.

NEW: Trump & his aides want to move ahead w/firing a few top officials like Esper and Wray and signing a slew of executive orders to make Trump look as presidential as possible, as his campaign disputes ballots and Biden kicks up his transition team.https://t.co/RlJDCGcccU

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:42 (five years ago)

Only a president can resign the presidency, he should think about that, it's exclusively presidential.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:43 (five years ago)

tipsy, you misunderstood me: I'm agreeing with you

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:43 (five years ago)

The pivot to presidentialness begins

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:44 (five years ago)

It'd be downright ... unpresidented.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:47 (five years ago)

But first, we'll be treated to a bit of light whining, followed by a more substantial course of lies and distortions.

the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:48 (five years ago)

I think it's pretty easy to understand why people get so goddamn frustrated with Dems and don't trust them at all.

Well yes, and me too. But I also think, and the point of my original post, is that a lot of the actual working difference it makes to have a center-left party in power rather than a far-right party is not immediately apparent on the surface but still significant and far-reaching.

And sure, having a center-left party in power does not keep rich people from getting richer or properties from being snapped up by corporate entities. But you can make some difference around the margins of those dynamics. If you really want to make rich people poor and control private property transfers, you need something more like an authoritarian state.

xpost to Alfred: Right, sorry, I was spinning off of your point, not arguing with it.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:49 (five years ago)

Bay Area real estate speculation is very bipartisan ... . I'm just thinking from the perspective of someone who works for non-profit orgs that get local gov't funding, which of course is complicated by state government often being intermediaries, and this is like the first time CA has had two democrat governors in a row since ...the 1880s. But often, when Republicans are in power, the majority of the funding going to cities is for roads and cops, and when Democrats are in power, there is money for other things.
