Oh boy!

The president is now speaking at 6:30 pm, per updated schedule

— Maggie Haberman (@maggieNYT) November 5, 2020

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 5 November 2020 22:55 (five years ago)

As a government employee, I can say this is untrue.

For sure, but also my point wasn't that having Obama in the White House was good for us personally, it was good for everything we were trying to do to help people who needed help. Especially in a state where we couldn't count on support from the capital.

PA margin down to 78k

Steve Bannon called for the beheading of Dr. Fauci and FBI Director Chris Wray.

Oh, that's just the bottle talking.

trying to get his last licks in before PA or GA get called.

Wondering how many votes Trump lost for saying he’d sack Fauci after the election.

Dan Worsley, Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:00 (five years ago)

Hope PA is called at 6:25 PM.

sadly, probably not many.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:01 (five years ago)

And GA at 6:29 just to rub the salt in.

The little engine that choogled (hardcore dilettante), Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:01 (five years ago)

I guarantee that trump lost 0 votes for anything he’s done in months. Trump voters do not think like that. Mayyyybe he lost some r votes for the stimulus checks.

tv cameras will let him bypass Twitter's masking of his tweets about fraud and election stealing.

tv cameras should put a mask that blurs his face and plays air horns every 4th word

PA 100% not getting called today. Neither is AZ.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:05 (five years ago)

Are there any GOP-leaning urban areas in the U.S.?
I'm thinking maybe San Diego.

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:05 (five years ago)

Phoenix, iirc.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:06 (five years ago)

Guessing weaponized autism is some cross pollination of vaccine conspiracy and chemtrails conspiracy. They’re going to douse us all in thimerosal from the skies.

How that helps trump win the election, he lost me there...

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:08 (five years ago)

Phoenix, iirc.

No

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:09 (five years ago)

yeah, Phoenix and Jacksonville both went for Biden this year

Dan S, Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:10 (five years ago)

president*

We'll have Trump as president until Inauguration Day at noon. That's a long time to suffer, but it's the law.

the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:10 (five years ago)

y-y-y'mean he doesn't just evaporate immediately?

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:11 (five years ago)

xpost Yeah this year, but hasn't Phoenix been a reliable GOP big city otherwise? I thought I heard that

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:11 (five years ago)

Well the majority of the population Arizona live in greater Phoenix and it was Republican until this year so sure.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:13 (five years ago)

If you draw the line at populations over 1m I would be surprised if there are any gop cities.

The entire Phx metro area is usually lumped together which afaik doesn't really happen with other cities. So you get the "suburban mom" vote of Scottsdale mixed in with more traditional urban voters.

Gratifying thread

The Trump campaign lawyer (surname Marcus, didn't catch his first name), chimes in again: "There's one other dimension to this problem".

CONFIRMED: There will be 2 U.S. Senate runoffs in Georgia in January, & they will decide who controls the U.S. Senate.

(This has been fairly clear since yesterday afternoon given outstanding ballots. It was just called by at least NBC.)

yeah in this instance "weaponized" is .. not pejorative

but we've spent way too much time on that tweet already

Give me a Chad Smith-type feel (map), Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:24 (five years ago)

Pfft.

On Fox just now, Kellyanne Conway says Trump is going to address “the state of the race from his perspective.” She says he’ll focus on how wrong the pollsters and media were.

“He’s going to go through some of those numbers, which I think is pretty clever.”

— Felicia Sonmez (@feliciasonmez) November 5, 2020

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:24 (five years ago)

Dunking on the pollsters like everyone’s already done for two days, excellent work.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:25 (five years ago)

there aren't that many cities with populations over 1m! many states do not have even 1 (one).

sarahell, Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:25 (five years ago)

What a clever boy.

jmm, Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:26 (five years ago)

awesome news about GA, thanks map

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Thursday, 5 November 2020 23:26 (five years ago)

Re: posts from YMP and tipsy mothra, of course the parties aren't the same. One is a socially liberal, economically neoliberal party that at least pretends to be on the side of the population, though also spends a lot of time enriching corporations. The other is a socially fascistic, economically neoliberal party that exists for the sole purpose of enriching corporations and making life miserable for anyone who isn't rich and white.

The commonality between the two parties is large enough that sometimes it becomes easy to become frustrated and conflate then. I understand that frustration in myself, and I understand it in a lot of other people.

The other issue is related to the representational politics that have been talked about a bit in this thread already, but many people on the left (and perhaps some of those minorities who went for Trump) are tired of representational politics standing in for actual substantive work on major issues. That is, we're tired of being seen as a guaranteed vote and not receiving much in return.

So, you take those two huge issues, and I think it's pretty easy to understand why people get so goddamn frustrated with Dems and don't trust them at all.

But then we have to think about who was in power when, let's say, parts of the Bay Area were sold wholesale to Chinese LLCs and techies. Sure, it was easier to get food stamps, and getting stuff done at City Hall was great, but...
