its like the sort of insanity that surrounds fandom around certain NFL or soccer teams, where people are not impartial and don't even pretend to be. every single pass interference call against you is bullshit. even the really, really blatant ones. turning politics into sports and making them seem inconsequential (which to be fair, to a lot of Trump's straight white male base, it really is) is his one real political "skill", and it's really fucking bad for the country. as someone posted in one of these threads..."if you bungle a pandemic this badly and your approval rating doesn't budge, something is fundamentally wrong with the country"

― frogbs, Thursday, 5 November 2020 18:06 (nine seconds ago) link

This is exactly it. And when someone calls you out and criticizes your position, you double down and dig in your heels out of pride, loyalty & spite. We've seen this behavior from the right wing as applied to EVERY single specific issue or scandal etc., where when faced with any conflicting fact or counterpoint to their position they just yell it louder and prouder... but now we're surprised that Trump turnout increased?
"But 230k Americans died because of him!"
"bullshit, fuck you, TRUMP 2020"

Evan, Thursday, 5 November 2020 18:25 (five years ago)

xp -- how much of the increase in turnout -- across the board, "joe biden had more votes than obama" included -- is simply attributable to vote-by-mail being expanded, rather than candidates doing anything "right" vs. "wrong"? serious question

A Georgia election official said that the state expects to finish counting ballots today. He said that some counties had forgotten "to press the upload button," and that they've been reminded to do so. https://t.co/pGEgku2VvJ pic.twitter.com/ScNSSZUgPL

I'd be willing to attribute at least 25% of it to that. Make it easier to vote, more people will do it.

Stuff like that kills me. It's like when I stand there waiting for an unplugged kettle to boil. It's just...not that big a deal when I do it.

Florida: Obama’s fault

Remember those Obama "Hope" posters? What aesthetically, does this remind you of? If you said communist propaganda, you'd be correct. This design, as popular as it was, was a bad idea in regards to the Latinx vote in FL. This really sealed the "communist" deal.

lol didn’t Obama win Florida both times

liberté, égalité, scampé (gyac), Thursday, 5 November 2020 18:36 (five years ago)

An abysmal showing by Democrats in state legislative races on Tuesday not only denied them victories in Sun Belt and Rust Belt states that would have positioned them to advance their policy agenda — it also put the party at a disadvantage ahead of the redistricting that will determine the balance of power for the next decade.

This makes me weep. I thought post-presidency Obama was gonna tackle this thorny issue?

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 5 November 2020 18:37 (five years ago)

it also put the party at a disadvantage ahead of the redistricting that will determine the balance of power for the next decade.

Also, Missouri Republicans got an referendum passed 51-49 restoring their ability to gerrymander after voters took that power away just 2 years ago

PA update

Alright, PA Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar says it's likely we could know by TODAY the winner in the state of PA. The outstanding 550K +/- votes are being counted today.

— Abby D. Phillip (@abbydphillip) November 5, 2020

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 5 November 2020 18:44 (five years ago)

the problem with referenda is that you can just keep putting up questions on the ballot and hope that eventually you can buy your wanted result.

Mark Levin is shouting into the void, as he has been doing for the majority of his career. He's like 19 rungs down from Limbaugh on the right-wing ladder. He's sub-Glenn Beck (and I mean Glenn Beck circa 2020).

I'm programmed to read the sentiments about PA going to Biden with cynical skepticism because I've been hurt so many times before by optimistic/over confident twitter-fed hype... in short why again is it such a sure thing to go blue? Sorry...

Evan, Thursday, 5 November 2020 18:52 (five years ago)

"You have the final say over the choosing of electors" - might be correct, but SUCH a dark path to go down.

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 5 November 2020 18:52 (five years ago)

xpost Basically because it's blue counties now for the most part, not to mention Philadelphia itself, and Biden's mail vote win rate (77-78% of total) is unchanged. Math takes care of the rest -- Trump's lead has shrunk dramatically since yesterday and there are still lots more votes to count.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 5 November 2020 18:53 (five years ago)

What aesthetically, does this remind you of? If you said communist propaganda, you'd be correct.

Natalie would be more convincing if she showed an example of the communist propaganda for comparison.

― the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless)

I'm not reading her thread (which I saw yesterday) the same way you guys are; then again, I'm Floridian and Cuban. She's saying the colors of the Obama poster "sealed the deal" for thousands of Hispanics who, I should point out, weren't voting for the black Democrat anyway.

Anyway, it doesn't matter, but the rest of her thread makes a couple good points.

xpost It's a variant of why Ralston has called Nevada at this point -- the numbers are clear and unchanging.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 5 November 2020 18:54 (five years ago)

"calling for" and "getting what you asked for" are two very separate things. trump's family members are whistling down the wind.

Fox still not rolling back on their Biden count, is that some sort of snub I wonder, Murdoch pissed off at getting angry phone calls? Curious to see what happens when Biden wins his next state.

Maresn3st, Thursday, 5 November 2020 19:00 (five years ago)

Stepping back a bit to a point raised way upthread -- there was some speculation that the optics of the Georgia runoffs may put Perdue/Loeffler more on the spot (either way) if there's some actual lame duck action on COVID relief. Perhaps but I'll at least add this interesting point: Kelly, having defeated McSally in Arizona, is due to take office at the end of November thanks to the slight quirks surrounding the seat, which was originally opened up by McCain's death and later Ducey putting McSally in after she lost to Sinema in 2018. That changes the Senate balance to a de facto 52-48, which will stay that way in the new year once Gardner and Jones are swapped out for Hickenlooper and Tuberville. Nothing may happen at all, but given the runoff election date of January 5th, it could make for an interesting few weeks there.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 5 November 2020 19:01 (five years ago)

For Trump to win Pennsylvania, the Secretary of State would have to be very, very wrong about how many mail ballots aren't included in the current results tally https://t.co/nRGDxTiC2l

reggie (qualmsley), Thursday, 5 November 2020 19:05 (five years ago)

Just did some back-of-the-envelope math, and it seems like Biden would only need about 60% of the remaining PA vote.

jaymc, Thursday, 5 November 2020 19:05 (five years ago)

Just got off call w/ conservative movement heads. Lots of talk of "stealing," election schemes, lack of transparency etc. When I pressed for examples, all I heard was windows being covered up in Atlanta to prevent monitors from watching the count. Anyone know what this refers to?
