I can see people wanting images embedded , but not videos. Links to videos are also useful bcz you can open the video in another window and half-watch while continuing to read the thread.

Right now I think it's super-useful for the poster to be able to embed if they mean to, or link via Belgium if they mean to do that - it seems to me to be removing functionality to embed Belgian tubes.

Also switching to all-embed is coddling ppl who refuse to read their own posts before clicking "submit," and I'm in favour of gulags for people who don't encouraging people to consider what they C&P.

If I wish to post a youtube video just for a cheap referential joke, embedding is better than the link, because someone can look at the embed and be amused by the reference without having to click and go listen to find out what has been linked.

Alternatively, that person can be like, "oh yeah I had forgotten how awesome that song is" and go to it.

However, as it stands now, if you mess up the syntaxes or just paste a mobile link, then no one knows what referential jest is being made unless they follow the link, which is sometimes just too much trouble.

Accordingly I humbly ask that the code accommodate multiple modes of pasting a YT link, because it's tough to remember whether it's watch question mark vee equals or equals vee watch question mark and hand-code appropriately.

That's my case and I am sticking to it.

Silby, that's like five more steps. Are you suggesting I take a screenshot, download it locally, upload it to a site like imgur (or whatever), copy the url, then put it in my ilx post as an img tag?

By that point the conversation has moved on and it isn't funny or topical anymore.

In contrast, everything on YouTube is already online and can be linked to directly.

Youtube used to helpfully have an option to get the long link from the share button which was compatible with the ilx embed code. Now it doesn't.
Lots of us use mobile devices now, some of us exclusively, so it's hard to get long links.
Pissing around with 'watch question mark vee equals' etc results in threads full of unplayable black boxes.

It would make sense for the site to now support the shorter links for embeds (and for users/sic to be able to disable them).

Also add autoplay...

Currently all it says is:

For Tweets, or YouTube/Vimeo videos: Paste in the URL of the tweet or the page containing the video you wish to embed

Those instructions from a youtube app rather than a desktop browser would still be 5 steps to inevitable black boxes

Copy the link from the share button on the app, change youtu.be to youtube.com, we can't remember if this bit needs www or not, oh wait we forgot to remove the s from the http bit lol that's a pain in the arse to click your cursor into with a wee phone screen, right, now delete everything after the dot com and type watch ? = then the character string you just deleted and it's case sensitive now just cover your eyes and hit submit oh shit you forgot the forward slash or is it a backslash hang on

this sounds like a GREAT move for threads with 120 embedded videos, stet you should definitely get distracted from silby's bookmarks idea

we used to have autoplay tho -- there was one thread that was whiney-adjacent that used it to hilarious result

the only good use of autoplay (possibly on the entire internet!) is uppers.gif
