AP called Michigan for Biden

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 21:45 (five years ago)

i feel good. just needs to hold on in nevada.

I’ve been really just kind of sad all day but I CAN’T BELIEVE WE’RE FINALLY GOING TO GET RID OF THIS MOTHERFUCKER

in a way, you know, you've got to hand it to biden. what a freaking fight.

If all Biden wanted was to win back the upper Midwest and Pennsylvania and spent millions for this purpose, he has succeeded.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 21:50 (five years ago)

yeah. i mean the democrats need to do way better, find something to campaign on for starters, but i'm cautiously impressed with how things are shaking down.

and this for me personally feels so crucial:

I CAN’T BELIEVE WE’RE FINALLY GOING TO GET RID OF THIS MOTHERFUCKER

i can't overstate how damaging it has been to my psyche to have this mf as president

Give me a Chad Smith-type feel (map), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 21:53 (five years ago)

hell, if he flips Georgia and Arizona holds, that's more than I expected.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 21:53 (five years ago)

Not seeing that AP call for Michigan anywhere?

Yeah:

I know it's "off brand" for me. But, like, I really don't think Dems "screwed up" the election. Biden ran a campaign specifically targeted a flipping a few white college educate Republicans and some rural voters, while hope Black people and Latinos did all the other things.

— Elie Mystal (@ElieNYC) November 4, 2020

I think it may end up having been the right play for this election. But it doesn't give one hope for the strength of the coalition.

jaymc, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 21:55 (five years ago)

Did the Trump campaign pull back on their spending toward the end of the campaign specifically so they could have enough money left over to be able to litigate results and pay for recounts? Or did he beg one last loan from Deutsche Bank?

epistantophus, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 21:55 (five years ago)

I think Nevada said they were going to give some more results tonight, to sate curiosity.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 21:56 (five years ago)

NYT has michigan for biden and they have been slower than AP to turn states red or blue

superdeep borehole (harbl), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 21:56 (five years ago)

The Biden campaign has exorcised a demon from 2016 by taking the Upper Midwest / rust belt seriously, to good effect. All his folksy Scrantonite stuff worked (combined with Trump fatigue).

The strong showing in the southwest (NV, AZ, NM) is heartening as well.

I harbored some hope for cracking the south a bit (NC, GA, TX would have been lovely) but that was always - to my mind - gravy.

didgeridon't (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 21:57 (five years ago)

Reuters and NYT have called Michigan. That’s good enough for me.

The little engine that choogled (hardcore dilettante), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 21:57 (five years ago)

NYT has a good chart of news organizations' calls. Looks like AP is the only one that *hasn't* called Michigan, but the rest have: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/11/03/upshot/network-race-call-tracker.html

jaymc, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 21:57 (five years ago)

back to thinking about the downballot disaster in the house and state legislatures--how much dem underperformance can be traced back to the biden campaign's completely understandable, even morally righteous decision to not canvas and knock on doors during a pandemic?

la table sur la table (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 21:58 (five years ago)

the races are closer in the South than they have been, which is good news for the 2024 race against Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka

akm, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 22:01 (five years ago)

While none of this is ideal, as far as progress goes, Trump is such a monumental piece of shit - historic, really - that I am glad he appears toast. He'll stick around causing trouble, and perhaps even try to run again (he'll certainly talk that up), maybe in the process gumming up the GOP works. And then in 2024, some GOP dork will possibly get the WH, because they will seem so much more normal than Trump. Or maybe they won't, because no one ever expected Trump to win, and who knows what the next few years have in store. Maybe he'll run as a Democrat. Maybe he'll run from jail every cycle, like LaRouche.

Meanwhile, Trump's lead in Georgia is down to just 1.4 points with a lot of Democratic vote still out. Will be razor thin here--and it seems on track to end up in recount territory, either way

My decision to go to bed and switch off for six hours instead of nailbiter all-nighter combined with really only following results here was a wise one, helped by threads being great.

Donald Trump will be managed out by the GOP grandees, having served his purpose (stacking the courts and radicalising the base through racial butthurt). That’s why they’re letting all the votes get counted and it’s only the Trump family pressing for stops to the count. I think in amongst the stresses of now, we forget about the advantages incumbent presidents including current office holder enjoy, and how unusual it is to boot a President after one term. Biden voters should be a lot happier than they are, and we should acknowledge that it’s not just racism that sends people to Trump, it’s the hatred of women by the beneficiaries of patriarchy (which includes a lot of women).

trump is def gonna try some extra-legal shit, which will almost definitely not succeed, but he will continue to be destructive and ridiculously annoying until the electoral votes are officially cast. and then he'll get to work sabotaging the transition.

Was just looking at other close state races in past elections. Didn't realize that Gore won New Mexico by only 366 votes!

jaymc, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 22:10 (five years ago)

This is many many x-posts to many people, but some takes...

- non-white people can definitely be prejudiced against other races. This should not be surprising or strange to anyone who has ever known any non-white people.

- whether with malicious intent or blithe stupidity and self-hatred (and many shades between), all people who voted for Trump are prejudiced, imho.

- that being said, if the Democrats were to actually offer anything besides lip service and empty idpol nonsense to such populations, such as a major jobs platform, schools program, and better access to healthcare, then the prejudice that does exist might be mitigated by such populations seeing actual results in their communities.

- finally, I agree with the sentiments about local politics, and am proud to live in the city in which I was born and raised, despite the fact that it has the shittiest infrastructure and contains levels of grime that makes New Yorkers blush.

"We have claimed, for Electoral Vote purposes..." lol this stupid dork

(•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 22:14 (five years ago)

Been following, and noted down, the numbers on the Bloomberg site on-and-off for the last ten hours. For PA, the number of counted votes vs Biden's deficit has developed as follows during the day:

5,320 -675
5,600 -518
5,620 -512
5,720 -464
5,830 -404
5,950 -330
5,990 -315
6,010 -309

Now, plotting these x-vs-y gives what looks like quite a stable, linear relationship. IF this were to continue, though NB NB PAST PERFORMANCE IS NO GUARANTEE OF FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS etc, the deficit would be eroded at about 6,600 votes counted.

We have claimed, for Electoral Vote purposes, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (which won’t allow legal observers) the State of Georgia, and the State of North Carolina, each one of which has a BIG Trump lead. Additionally, we hereby claim the State of Michigan if, in fact,.....

Saw this on asktrumpsupporters and thought it reasonable, coming from someone that has supported this lunatic:

If Biden wins legitimately, and this goes to the Supreme Court, I hope they give Trump the finger. I agree with his policies, but I believe in the system.
