When I was in high school my mom went to Eastern Europe on a choir tour and brought me back some really, really bad Czech and Hungarian hard rock CDs.

I really like ska/rocksteady/dub/reggae.

You all should hear this:

I guess I hardly think of Jamaican music as "foreign" at all, just because it's so heavily influenced by U.S. music and vice versa (and the African diaspora blah blah blah).

Jordan, Monday, 17 September 2007 15:47 (seventeen years ago) link

But you can take that to the extreme that there's no such thing as "foreign" music to United Staters.

n/a, Monday, 17 September 2007 15:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, yeah, that "Teen Dance Music" record I posted is basically taking western music and playing with Eastern instruments, so it feels less foreign. But it's awesome stuff; even the non-Ennio Morricone tracks sound like Ennio Morricone, played on such foreign instruments.

kenan, Monday, 17 September 2007 15:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Sure, "world music" is a pretty meaningless and arbitrary term, but so is every other genre classification.

n/a, Monday, 17 September 2007 15:50 (seventeen years ago) link

I like Orchestra Baobob and saw these guys at the African festival a few weeks ago and liked them a lot.

Eazy, Monday, 17 September 2007 15:51 (seventeen years ago) link

world music = crashing waves, wind in trees

So. When a client comes in I always offer them coffee. This one guy came in earlier and I offered him coffee.

He said, "Oh sure, I'll take a decaf."

OUTRAGEOUS!!!

hmm, the boss is in today (was off last week for the holiday), and i'm not sure we 'click'. but will probably only interact with her for another few hours. weird lady.

colette, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I feel like shit. Weird sort of hangover from food and booze-laden weekend. And I have to meet a guy from WorkerJusticeInc. tonight for drinks and I rrrrreally don't want to.

:(

Jesse, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:07 (seventeen years ago) link

True, but I still see a difference between stuff like afrobeat, where the local rhythms are translated to drumset and guitars and keys etc., and musicians trying to play some kind of traditional folk style (which I guess in this case would be the West African drums + vocals groups).

Jordan, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I was image-searching something related to wolves and found this instead:

OK. Let's entertain each other. You go first.

Jesse, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:21 (seventeen years ago) link

I heard a joke the other day but I can't tell it on the internet. I'm going to take a long lunch instead.

Jordan, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:25 (seventeen years ago) link

I would like to reinstate Thirsty Thursday, or some approximation thereof. Discuss.

dan m, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes.

End of discussion.

I'm up for the reinstatement of TT, especially now that the FFs aren't doing anything during the week. However, I can't do TT this week because I'm taking the GRE on Sat. and I need to cram this week. I took one of the computer simulations yesterday, I got a 780/800 on the verbal and a 420/800 on the math. ;_;

I don't need math to do library science, right?

n/a, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:34 (seventeen years ago) link

OMG GOOD LUCK NICK!

horseshoe, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:35 (seventeen years ago) link

i like the idea of thirsty thursdays, we used to do 'toasty tuesdays' or something similar when i lived here before, and it usually involved margaritas. fun even though i didn't drink back then.

colette, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:37 (seventeen years ago) link

p.s. nick you're going to do great!

colette, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm up for reinstated Thirsty Thursdays, too. Also, Kr is out of town all this week. Let's party.

jaymc, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:37 (seventeen years ago) link

The free testing software the GRE people send out when you sign up is PC-only. GOOD JOB!

Fortunately I got some other mock testing software with the prep book I purchased. Only two full tests, but I have four mock paper tests left too.

n/a, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:38 (seventeen years ago) link

ps 420/800 for math is not great

n/a, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:38 (seventeen years ago) link

though honestly I could be working harder on preparing. I guess that's what the last week is for, though, right?

n/a, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:39 (seventeen years ago) link

PCs are the future.

Jesse, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:39 (seventeen years ago) link

The Mac fad is passing.

Jesse, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Discuss.

Jesse, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:40 (seventeen years ago) link

How scientific is library science?

dan m, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:42 (seventeen years ago) link

They say it's because it's supposed to be an exact representation and they only do the actual testing on PCs, but that's bullshit, like they couldn't slap together a decent facsimile for Mac? I think they are just LAZY.

n/a, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:42 (seventeen years ago) link

they are LAZY and they are also ASSHOLES

horseshoe, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:43 (seventeen years ago) link

The Mac fad is passing.

heh. This is why their computer sales (not including iPods) were up 30% from just last year.

kenan, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Nick... any chance of borrowing a PC laptop for someone for the night, or something?

kenan, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Nick - could you get permission to use one at work when you're done one day?

KitCat, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Nah it's cool.

n/a, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I suppose you could borrow my laptop. Barring that you could go to the library.

You are welcome to my laptop though. Just keep liquids off of it.

attn. renters:
be glad that paying for plumbers is your landlord's responsibility. (isn't it?) i am $413 poorer today. eek.

La Lechera, Monday, 17 September 2007 17:10 (seventeen years ago) link

ILX is boring today. :( Where are the fites? The lolboobs? The contentious subject matter? I feel let down.

kenan, Monday, 17 September 2007 17:12 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean, there is a Russ Meyer thread, but the result is pretty much a foregone conclusion. Beyond the Valley of The Dolls pwns all.

kenan, Monday, 17 September 2007 17:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Ravinia is on for tonight. Take the Metra up and drink on the train and enjoy the countryside.
