"and besides they're so incompetent!"

early-Woolf semantic prosody (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 20:27 (five years ago)

Since that isn't actually going to impact the outcome, it sounds like they are just trying to delay so they can sow more doubt, which is disturbing.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 20:27 (five years ago)

Possibly they don’t. Despite the bluster, cnn can’t find any evidence they have actually filed suit in Michigan

The Trump campaign has released a statement saying it has filed a lawsuit in Michigan asking the state to halt counting until it receives “meaningful access” to observe the opening of ballots and the counting process.

CNN teams in Michigan have not seen evidence that the suit has actually been filed but continue to check.

While the Trump campaign has said that lawsuit has been filed in the Michigan Court of Claims, docket clerk for the Court of Claims, Morgan Adams, told CNN that the court has not received the filing.

American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 20:29 (five years ago)

Cool, I am sure Trump campaign staffers are exactly the right people to dispassionately and objectively examine ballots and rule on their legitimacy. Cool cool.

balsamic jihad (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 20:29 (five years ago)

Also, this...

In fact, the ⁦@MIGOP⁩ has so overwhelmed the Detroit vote counting room with “challengers” (most who are not lawyers), preventing actual Dem lawyers from actually getting in. Sure feels like a deliberate attempt to try to steal the election. pic.twitter.com/pIZCzUB6VH

what a good and normal country

||||||||, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 20:32 (five years ago)

can i sound like a toooootal goober & just say all I want right now is to have a President who can listen to the opinions of others & bring knowledgable people back into the decision-making fold

imagine that

i mean, this is identifies a really significant axis of division, right? like as a collegio-american i want this too, but there are lots and lots of americans who feel that this leaves them out in the cold and would like a President who frequently and publicly tells knowledgeable people to get stuffed

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 20:33 (five years ago)

Trump's current positions

Counting must be stopped in:

1. PA (where he's leading, but could fall behind)

2. MI (where he probably can't catch up)

Counting must continue in:

1. AZ (where he's behind)

2. NV (where's he's behind)

Recount in:

1. Wisconsin (where he lost)

OK, so resummarizing the latest 538 liveblog post from Nathaniel Rakich, here's when we can expect action (all times EST):

AZ: should be a batch of results after 9 PM and some more after 12:30 AM
NV: no results until tomorrow at noon
GA: one major county (Fulton) aiming for 9 PM, not sure on the rest
MI: one major county (Wayne) aiming for 6 PM, not sure on the rest
PA: "we're looking at Thursday or Friday"
NC: "mail-in ballots have until Nov. 12 to arrive, and only at that point will more results be released"

assuming all that's true, i can safely tune out and try to get work done until at least 6 PM, and probably much later. with no PA or NV results coming today, few of Biden's win scenarios are going to be resolved today one way or the other. (he could win with MI, AZ and GA though!)

So glad to have a Democratic administration in Michigan right now. Really shows how important it was to make gains in state govts.

The Brooks Brothers Riot in Miami, 2000

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 20:43 (five years ago)

Update on Nevada, we're getting something today:

UPDATE:

No update.

Washoe County has apparently fallen into a black hole. We miss you Biggest Little City.

All of the media hectoring apparently is going to cause the SOS to put together an update later today. When? I don't know.

But should be combo of urban/rural numbers.

— Jon Ralston (@RalstonReports) November 4, 2020

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 20:43 (five years ago)

And why the nonsense in Detroit isn't the Brooks Brothers riot:

Gonna invite comparisons to "the Brooks Brothers riot," but the difference between protesting a count that could reverse a <1000 vote lead and asking to stop a count where you're down 38,000 votes is pretty big https://t.co/Wv5i1AeZXx

— Dave Weigel (@daveweigel) November 4, 2020

the brooks brothers riot also stalled a re-count that had like hours before a court-mandated deadline. Michigan can basically take as long as they like - the deadline for this count isn't for three weeks

A huge chunk of Trump's stop counting votes at 12:01 AM on 11/4 argument will get blown to shit if he is behind at that time and I think there is a very good chance that is the case.

The 1M+ mail-in ballots PA is still counting are those that were received *on time.*

The #SCOTUS case is about those received *late," which PA is storing *separately.*

So even *if* late-arriving ballots are an issue, that has nothing to do with counting all of the on-time ones.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 20:54 (five years ago)

the main distinction btw what we're going to be seeing for the next week+ and the Brook Bros riot is that this is *entirely* for the purposes of making noise, stalling, and buying time to "normalize" their objections

I don't think it has much of a chance of working but they sure as shit are going to pull out all the weak-ass stops

imago, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 21:14 (five years ago)

The thing is, isn't Trump right about AZ? The Fox call does indeed seem premature, not supported by other news orgs, and based upon an incorrect report about the % of ballots counted. I'm not saying Biden will lose, but it really hasn't been called yet.

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 21:15 (five years ago)

i agree w map that it feels like dems need a more transactional politics. i.e. what democrats used to do. hand people jobs, benefits, and remind them who gave them to them. and eh probably be a bit strategic about who benefits.

@Moodles: AP also called Arizona. As Ned posted way upthread, AP and Fox use different data than the other organizations, which explains the discrepancy. I believe the incorrect report about the percentage of ballots counted came after the AP/Fox calls and did not affect them.
