actually there is an easy answer to this and it's "no"

Yeah he's clearly not arguing for that, he's highlighting the challenges.

One sort of depressing thing is if it turns out Biden really did improve a lot among voters over 65, we can't just keep waiting for old ppl to die for things to get better ...

also i am going a bit mad with the rest of you looking at an america that's learned nothing and seems determined to look nothing. i agree that this looks like a biden win but this is gonna be so ugly for so long.

this has not been my experience in the NY/NJ area, where it's been prevalent on paper and in parlance for a few years wherever colors mix in the progressive intelligentsia pool (and, for awhile at least, among a certain 12-20 y.o. middle class urbanite class) but that could well be in flux at the moment.
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses),

Florida, as y'all are learning, is a straaaaaange place.

ha well my (South American immigrants to USA) family do not belong to "the progressive intelligentsia pool" by any measure (I'm the first person in my family to go to college, like many here I imagine).

All cars are bad (Euler), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 14:45 (five years ago)

i really can't add much to the general mode except that i am focusing on the positive and trying not to let the "fuck" type posts affect how i'm evaluating everything. it's just hard r/n because it doesn't look like we'll have any new real news for hours, and yet how can i really completely look away?

also FYI every time i reload the bookmark, my brain is back to

So Trump going to court is a thing, but... with what? Is he just gonna stand there and beg? What's his complaint? That he lost?

It’s almost like... this isn’t a consistent block.

Idk what the Dems message is gonna be now but not having someone on TV 24/7 screaming about anarchists and rioters and how Covid is essentially over is probably a good thing for this nation

he'd have to file lawsuits for every state he's disputing. and as we've seen earlier this week, the judge or judges being far right wing kooks doesn't mean the ruling will be in your favor.

this is why we need to win as many remaining states as possible. increase his workload if he wants to challenge.

he'll probably demand a few recounts where he's allowed to ,which is fine. recounts are fine.

The way America improves and “learns something” can only happen by shutting down Facebook. I am serious about this

frogbs, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 14:49 (five years ago)

The way America improves and “learns something” can only happen by shutting down Facebook mass, herculean effort on the part of an unprecedented number of activists

it bangs for thee (Simon H.), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 14:50 (five years ago)

I guess one potential silver lining is if Trump isn’t President (and hopefully not long for this world), the GOP might have a hard time filling the role with someone who can martial 90% support all the time no matter what

looking forward to the Facebook Divestiture Act, where they force Zuck to break up FB into 10 smaller social media sites with specialized focuses - i.e. Politicsbook, Eventbook, Buttbook, Shitpostbook, etc

xxp yeah one thing that’s clear now is that Obama really was an exceptional candidate and I’m hoping in 4 years Republicans realize the same about Trump

frogbs, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 14:54 (five years ago)

a good idea is to underestimate the GOP's chances of finding a way to appeal to American voters

it bangs for thee (Simon H.), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 14:55 (five years ago)

Here's another thing:

white people use "Latinx"

I've never a single South or Central American use it, even in the 18-25 set.

― Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), miércoles 4 de noviembre de 2020

My experience is slightly different up in the Boston area. I've been hearing the term used with greater regularity among activist and progressive circles... but yeah, nowhere outside that.

Yeah. We are a nation/world fighting for the remaining scraps and that’s a pretty solid platform to run on for the remainder of humanity’s short life.

the Dems need a figure who can woo latino voters, exhibits media savvy, and can skew right on immigration. is Morrissey busy?

The senate. We (90% sure) didn’t win the senate.

As tipsy said, the worst of the “Biden wins” scenarios. I’m about to hate Mitch McConnell more than i ever thought possible.

And more than anything - no message was sent to the maga idiots. None at all. If anything I think this emboldens them

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 15:07 (five years ago)

Don’t mean to catastrophize, but for example, the green new whatever, which is so huge because it’s meant to make up for years of inaction, now has zero chance to pass. Which means the next next green new whatever will have to be even more enormous to make up for now!

The fucking world is burning down!

this assumes the Biden admin has any interest in advancing it in the first place

Biden already killed any chance of this happening.

early-Woolf semantic prosody (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 15:19 (five years ago)

I'm only marginally hispanic (1/4 Mexican) but my assessment of Latinx as a term is that it's only used by people on the left and predominantly by Millenials and whatever that generation is that is younger than them. And someone needs to stop looking at all 'hispanics' as a monolith because Mexican immigrants are not concerned with the same things anti-communist Cubans are.

akm, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 15:20 (five years ago)

so in that sense, I think 'latinx' is not a good term, in that it applies too broadly. TBH I did not realize anyone considered Cubans 'latino'.

akm, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 15:20 (five years ago)

So this is the perfect opportunity for Biden to demonstrate his genius for working across the aisle, right? RIGHT?!?

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 15:21 (five years ago)

maybe by 2024 Kanye will figure out how to actually get his name on a ballot

akm, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 15:22 (five years ago)

Yes (xp to akm). My South American family immigrated, and keeps immigrating, to the USA to make money. They were anti-Indigenous, anti-Black racists in South American, and they're the same in the USA. There's no intersectionality. They're...Americans.

All cars are bad (Euler), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 15:23 (five years ago)

yeah I suspect there will be a lot of folks in Joe’s admin who are secretly very glad that the Senate likely remains in GOP hands

with 50 or more democratic senators, i'm confident that something would have passed. it wouldn't be the green dream whatever, but they would have passed some compromise bullshit (with 0 republican votes), and padded it out with infrastructure stuff, pushed it as more of a "jobs bill".

it's not controlling the senate that killed the chances of it happening

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 15:25 (five years ago)

A-B-C. A-Always, B-Be, C-Chooglin (will), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 15:25 (five years ago)

COVID-19 relief is the big one that will get fucked in the short-term

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 15:27 (five years ago)

Only a ticket composed of Kanye West and Nathan East can unite the nation.

balsamic jihad (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 15:28 (five years ago)

it's not all doom and gloom, of course. controlling the presidency is very important. i'm hopeful that a lot of the ROT of the trump administration can be cleaned out. it's going to be a big job. and the house will continue to say the right things and then send bills to the senate to die.

but still. covid-19 help? when can we get some more covid-19 help in this fucking country? ask mitch mcconnell

xp neanderthal, exactly
