Trump’s campaign in both 2016 and 2020 did some smart micro targeting of black and Hispanic voters who were socially conservative and/or economically moderate and/or pro police. I think the democrats took those votes for granted and assumed “he’s racist” was enough. If you want to know why we aren’t doing better than we are (eg we should have the senate right now) that’s one place to look.

Hard to imagine that idiots want fewer labor protections and benefits, but I guess the propaganda campaign by Uber et al really worked re: Prop 22.

btw the current narrative among Trumpers = voting precincts are "stopping the count" when Trump gets close.

they really are this stupid. they've been spreading false rumors that the cuont stopped in Philly even as those poor employees worked all night.

And just like that Biden has overtaken Trump in Michigan by 25,000 votes with most of the remaining votes likely to be favorable to Biden.

It's really hard to see how Trump wins reelection at this point.

Xxpost Also , appealing to the self-hatred of one group and racism of another isn't a way to shore up Dem votes. Fuck those idiots.

xpost Apparently there is even a live stream!

Anyway if you asked Biden:

Biden campaign thinking:

- They believe they’ve won Wisc, expect it to be called this morning
- Mich vote by mail lead is insurmountable and will be called midday
- Philly vote by mail will come in tonight or tomorrow
- GA result midday or early afternoon
- NV called tomorrow

don't underestimate the "I don't want Uber to cost a penny more" asshole vote

rob, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 14:18 (five years ago)

Well at the moment this looks like the worst of the "Biden wins" scenarios — hard to claim much of a mandate, a Senate majority difficult, and Trump and his base not getting the repudiation they deserve (and that the Republican Party needs to dissuade it from further adventures along the Trump path).

But of course even the worst Biden wins scenarios are better than any of the Biden loses scenarios.

Biden has taken the lead in Michigan, according to the AP
Along with AZ, NV and WI, he now leads in states worth 270 electoral votes--the number needed to winhttps://t.co/8bdQchP5zB

can't stop the vote count now, or trump would lose

la table sur la table (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 14:23 (five years ago)

Vital, because now Trump can't whine that they need to stop counting votes, but extant votes (afaict) likely help Biden not just in these states but remaining states, like PA and even GA and NC.

"Latinos" are a monolith to white people. Biden is winning Arizona thanks to Latinos. A Puerto Rican in Orlando has different worries than a Venezuelan in Doral. I still get white people who ask, flabbergasted, why Cubans lean GOP: "Don't they care about immigration?" Um, no? Why should they? And Black-identifying Latinos face plenty of racism from other Latinos.

I vastly preferred Sanders and Warren to Biden, but the results so far don't necessarily scream that either would be doing better than Joe.

Yeah. Maybe too soon for this kind of thing, but I think this thread is good.

Progressives will recriminate against centrists and vice versa, but all Dem factions have to contend with this:

Turnout was high. The prog base showed up like progs want. There was huge cross-partisan outreach like mods want.

But Trump activated a MASSIVE racist/sexist vote.

Here's another thing:

white people use "Latinx"

I've never a single South or Central American use it, even in the 18-25 set.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 14:32 (five years ago)

I’m sorry, I understand the trauma, but I was seriously annoyed by people screaming bloody murder way too early last night. And that kinda hysteria isn’t doing much for my own mental health.

Wayne county (Detroit) is only 69% counted; it's got 1.8 million people, is only 52% white, and is currently 67 - 32 for Biden so I'm feeling pretty OK about it

pre-"Latinx" a Latina woman taught me about Latin@, but this was on a college campus so

rob, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 14:40 (five years ago)

Because what it looks like right now is that Dems were soft with POC *men* who like Trump's toxic masculinity. Do we really want to cater to that? Pander more to the anti-chavistas? Dial back our efforts on police reform and submit to the Blue Line Flag folks? No easy answers.

— David Atkins (@DavidOAtkins) November 4, 2020

actually there is an easy answer to this and it's "no"

it bangs for thee (Simon H.), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 14:41 (five years ago)

I've gone from panic to just glum disappointment. Looks like Biden will win, but GOP will keep the Senate, and gain seat in the House.

o. nate, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 14:42 (five years ago)

tbc though I 100% agree that the "Latino vote" is an ignorant myth

rob, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 14:42 (five years ago)

I view this election like being in a fire fight, thinking you're completely dead, even being shot in the leg, and somehow getting to safety on pure adrenaline.

you're relieved to still be alive, but after the adrenaline fades, you're going to suddenly feel the pain of your leg and realize that there may be future firefights. and that your next few months still might not be rosy.

i'm not looking forward to when my brain shifts there after the 'relief' of Biden winning. this isn't really a victory lap. we're worse off than 4 years ago, possibly irreparably so. you have to stop uprisings at the beginning, which is why the Tea Party is obsolete now - they won political races, but not the Presidency.

we wouldn't be living in a paradise in 2020 with Hillary, but....we'd be doing a lot better. we're at the end of Die Hard, civilians are dead, and the buildings at Nakatomi plaza are destroyed.

ok gonna go rub one out brb

this has not been my experience in the NY/NJ area, where it's been prevalent on paper and in parlance for a few years wherever colors mix in the progressive intelligentsia pool (and, for awhile at least, among a certain 12-20 y.o. middle class urbanite class) but that could well be in flux at the moment.

Yeah he's clearly not arguing for that, he's highlighting the challenges.

One sort of depressing thing is if it turns out Biden really did improve a lot among voters over 65, we can't just keep waiting for old ppl to die for things to get better ...
