that's great to hear.

I'm shocked that the lex was posting as late as 2016!
His long-time beau being a professional chef does soften some of the edges of his Einstein-in-1905 leap - though it is still very impressive!
― Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 20:50 (three years ago) link
lex regularly posted until 2017, last post in January 2018 with his noms for the 2017 EOY as a slight return. seem to remember he wanted to focus on a book he was writing.

The all-time lex thread was Taking sides: Children vs. (non-human) animals
lex would not back down one inch, in spite of the pile on. it was kind of awesome, in a way.

tbf he was posting as a londoner and london parents and their horrible children are the worst

I think I actually stopped reading the ILE for a while as a direct result of the quality of that thread.

Lex used to get so mad when I tried to persuade him that "anyone can learn to cook", ha
The image of him placing a plastic colander over a boiling pot of water to steam something is all-time

Kate wrote a two-word response on the politics thread a few days ago then disappeared again. I miss Kate...
though totally understand needing to take a break from here, particularly the politics threads, which are cesspools of centrist garbage imho. Like get over it, democracy has never existed, you're just propping up a useless myth, the sooner we all understand that the better.
but anyway.

I disagree with your assessment of ILX as a centrist cesspool but I hope Kate is doing well wherever she is.

I hope Kate is doing well wherever she is.
Same.
table, if you think this place is predominantly centrist then you may want to try interacting with the enemy people outside of your bubble more just for comparison's sake.

He popped in a few days ago to submit a poem to the ILX Poetry Competition and he also linked to a cool article about glow-in-the-dark platypuses on I Love AFL.

Funny thing is Lex DID figure out how to cook. He’s enjoying his time on tennis Twitter.

pom, oh I have! I think I just hold people here to a higher standard because I think you're all very smart. Your politics, though...

I thought ilx is super left?
― Evan, Thursday, 12 November 2020 22:44 (three years ago) link
we're pretty left on average
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 12 November 2020 22:58 (three years ago) link
There's only a handful of posters I would consider 'super left'. I'm certainly not one of them!
― Boring blighters bloaters (Tom D.), Thursday, 12 November 2020 23:00 (three years ago) link
ilx has a (variably) friendly lib-left split, which seems like an absurd superleft phenomenon if you're just walking in from the history-denuded redblue NYT world where bernie sanders is an "ultraliberal" but which don't worry will rapidly become just another dreary fact.
― difficult listening hour, Thursday, 12 November 2020 23:07 (three years ago) link
ilx is v centrist
― plax (ico), Friday, 13 November 2020 18:29 (three years ago) link
no one in the USA can figure out what is centrist, liberal, leftist or radical, partly because what political ideas are considered to fit each category varies enormously by geography, demographics, and widespread individual eccentricities. The consolidation of media control in the USA has resulted in much greater homogeneity among conservatives, but any form of ideology to the left of FOX and talk radio starts to disintegrate into a patchwork of loose coalitions around salient issues.

Thanks sleeve, I can't stay away for too long. I'm also glad there's another left person with whom I get along on a regular basis, which I can't say for some others lol, even as much as I agree with them.

Labeling other people is aggressively rude, table. I'm sure you love it when others do that to you.
― the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Friday, 13 November 2020 18:56 (three years ago) link
i've never considered being labeled rude. i think regarding at as rude means a person has a huge ego tbh.
― Give me a Chad Smith-type feel (map), Friday, 13 November 2020 18:58 (three years ago) link
Labelling someone a centrist is only rude if you consider being a centrist bad, though.

i've never considered being labeled rude.

Ask table how he feels about centrists.
― the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Friday, 13 November 2020 19:05 (three years ago) link
labeling someone a centrist is always rude because everyone who’s not a centrist thinks being a centrist is bad and centrists think being an anythingist is bad

that said I've seen a lot of broadsheet thinkpieces that are miles to the right of what anyone on here would dare say or get away with. not that this means #allbroadsheetthinkpieces are media via small-c conservatism

I think Aimless is a liberal, in the context of general US political definitions, though in terms of ILX and global(?) politics -- centrist is close
