As someone that mostly lurked for 11 years before posting regularly, I get it. This place is intimidating until you read the luna thread and realize everyone here is as dumb as you.

My take as a lurker is that people tend to want to know who someone is before responding to them, as that sort of feeds (maybe unconsciously) into how they react to someone. If a lurker posts and people are not sure whether it’s someone they respect or not, it seems there is less willingness to engage. And on my end, I’m not willing or able to put in the time it takes to overcome that (small) obstacle and become an active member of the community. So I mostly lurk and occasionally chime in if I feel the urge. You guys are a part of my life and I appreciate you, but I don’t feel the need to force myself into your lives. Unless I can somehow contribute, which isn’t often.

― epistantophus, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 17:14 (four minutes ago) link

I've had the same experience, and I'm not a lurker as much as I am just relatively infrequent. But either way I feel any of my bigger thoughtful posts have been a bit more overlooked than the more established ilx blue checkmarks around here. Another ilx observation: people cannot resist typing "Ned" in their response to Ned posts. It's an understandable thing to do in a reply to someone specific, but still- it's irresistible for all ilxors.

Re: PA, my mom is a PA voter and told me voting was a particularly onerous pia this year. She requested a mail-in ballot that took so long to show up she decided to just drop it off in person rather than risk another mail delay, and even finding a dropbox to do that was a pain in the ass. fwiw.

In a neighborhood in Roseville, California, people with Biden signs on their yards discovered blue dots had been spray painted on the road in front of their homes sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning. No other houses reportedly had the dots.

One of the neighbors told KCRA-TV that the markings were “pretty creepy” and made him feel “targeted and intimidated a little bit.”

perhaps these blue dots are marking the locations where special thank you notes should be dropped off

I am not buying champagne on Election Day ever again, because that went really well last time. At least I could take it back and get a refund.

I'm watching right wingers flip out over "voting irregularities" in Philly. Mostly the same video over and over of a maskless GOP poll watcher being rejected from a polling station.

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 18:12 (five years ago)

isn't "poll watching" illegal? volunteer to run a polling station if you're so worried about it.

so blue texas is happening?

treeship., Tuesday, 3 November 2020 18:19 (five years ago)

poll watching is legal. the watcher must be a wholly neutral presence. they are not allowed to interfere with the process of voting in any way, especially anything resembling intimidation. there are probably other requirements set by state laws. things like taking a training in what you are allowed to do and what is prohibited and being assigned to a polling place, not just showing up freelancing.

the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 18:20 (five years ago)

yeah, the latter point is my issue.

treeship., Tuesday, 3 November 2020 18:22 (five years ago)

xp, yep, multiple friends of mine received said training and are serving as “observers” today

just another three-pinocchio post by (✓) (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 18:22 (five years ago)

in an official capacity, that sounds good

treeship., Tuesday, 3 November 2020 18:23 (five years ago)

i was specifically talking about the guys just goin' out and "watching," working completely independent of the actual operation of running the polling station. that sounds indistinguishable from intimidation

treeship., Tuesday, 3 November 2020 18:24 (five years ago)

i mean, it's absolutely intimidation that's their intent

guys this thread is blurring together, can someone confirm if I have these latest developments right:

*Luna ordered USPS to gather up any undelivered ballots, and promised to drive by and get them
*Harris County, Texas has been invaded by Neil Patrick Henry
*Rudy Giuliani is going to watch some poles
*Karl is now President-elect of ILX
*A few lurkers are attempting to start a coup to subvert the results

am I close?

I just talked to a conservative guy I know, who of course I disagree with on most things, and he was saying how many conservatives he talks to — mostly middle-aged, white conservatives, especially women — who don't like Trump personally but say they are genuinely afraid that if Biden wins somehow that means BLM and Antifa are going to be coming for them and their families. The guy I was talking to does not share this concern and thinks it's nuts, but he said people seem sincere about it.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 18:33 (five years ago)

(This guy also prides himself on not watching Fox News, so I suppose that could be the main difference.)

these would probably be the same people I knew who called John Kerry "dictator material"

My parents aren't MAGA, and this is why they voted for Trump again.
