Hugs, map.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 16:05 (five years ago)

That really sucks, map, I'm sorry, I do want to say that if Biden wins and there's a Dem Congress there will 100% be more bailouts but that's not structural change. (Biden prez + GOP Senate will mean Mitch McConnell doing everything he can to keep you and millions of others from getting even short-term relief with the intent of maximizing public misery until 2022 midterms)

i'll take your hugs but really would you slip me $100s while you're at it? j/k

totally sympathetic and I know Dems getting the trifecta ain't gonna improve things overnight. but if you want the body to heal, you have to excise the cancer first.

frogbs, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 16:11 (five years ago)

yah i get that. part of my frustration is also living in a very conservative state and feeling like there's no way out. anyway

good post, map. the longer one, but i liked the $100 one too. :)

Another longtime UK lurker checking in to wish you the best of luck tomorrow. This is the 2nd US election I have followed mainly via ILX politics threads, and once again this place has proven to be a great resource with some booming posts over the last few months :)

(the one with 3 L's) (Willl), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 16:28 (five years ago)

It was clearly obvious as of last night but Elections Project confirms with their first morning update looking at the remainder of last night's voting as we know it -- over 100 million people early voted. Remarkable.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 16:31 (five years ago)

2.5 million early votes in PA is less than half of the 2016 total vote, which was ~6 million.

jaymc, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 16:32 (five years ago)

Yeah what's notable re PA is comparing it to the percentage of early votes cast in 2016 -- something like 5%. So ramping up to that level is actually pretty astonishing given the state didn't really do that approach before.

is this the impenetrable wall or whatever that they're putting up around the white house, i guess?

Went to visit the new 'wall' around the White House this morning.

Here are a few views.

This 1st is of the fencing as it passes in front of the Old Executive Office Bldg., which is part of the White House complex, next to the White House.

Note Jersey barriers behind fence. pic.twitter.com/JfWYsNhfUA

NO SCALPING TICKETS TO THE TRUMP ELECTORAL VOTE WIN PARTY! YOU MUST SELL THEM FOR THEIR FACE VALUE OF $0, NO MORE.

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 16:50 (five years ago)

I must surely be a straight white American male because I have no idea how one would lurk here over a long time and never post.

I mean, everybody has an opinion about everything, surely. And most of us have utterly no expertise in this shit, we're just running our mouths. I'm sure I'm frequently wrong and obnoxious and annoying a high percentage of the time, but nevertheless I persist.

Agree that more voices - even dissenting ones - are welcome

Kabob Dylan (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 16:54 (five years ago)

As someone that mostly lurked for 11 years before posting regularly, I get it. This place is intimidating until you read the luna thread and realize everyone here is as dumb as you.

this is beautiful

Everyone needs to watch Karl Rove’s 2012 election night meltdown on Fox News, when he didn’t believe the Ohio results and Megyn Kelly marched over to the decision desk to confirm with the nerds. Fantasy vs. facts. https://t.co/JLRcx6YPhL

— Peter Hamby (@PeterHamby) November 3, 2020

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 17:05 (five years ago)

I watched that live in 2012 semi-drunk and had to ask people the next day if it really happened.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 17:11 (five years ago)

I too enjoyed that moment, but let's not go too crazy on praising Megyn Kelly

Kabob Dylan (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 17:12 (five years ago)

My take as a lurker is that people tend to want to know who someone is before responding to them, as that sort of feeds (maybe unconsciously) into how they react to someone. If a lurker posts and people are not sure whether it’s someone they respect or not, it seems there is less willingness to engage. And on my end, I’m not willing or able to put in the time it takes to overcome that (small) obstacle and become an active member of the community. So I mostly lurk and occasionally chime in if I feel the urge. You guys are a part of my life and I appreciate you, but I don’t feel the need to force myself into your lives. Unless I can somehow contribute, which isn’t often.

epistantophus, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 17:14 (five years ago)

I've had the same experience, and I'm not a lurker as much as I am just relatively infrequent. But either way I feel any of my bigger thoughtful posts have been a bit more overlooked than the more established ilx blue checkmarks around here. Another ilx observation: people cannot resist typing "Ned" in their response to Ned posts. It's an understandable thing to do in a reply to someone specific, but still- it's irresistible for all ilxors.

Re: PA, my mom is a PA voter and told me voting was a particularly onerous pia this year. She requested a mail-in ballot that took so long to show up she decided to just drop it off in person rather than risk another mail delay, and even finding a dropbox to do that was a pain in the ass. fwiw.
