For all the wonderful Americans I know and have seen post here - I hope you get a government which starts you back on the path to the good things America stands for.

As another non-US person my opinions are also unneeded, but all the best tomorrow and may Trump have some sort of paralysing embolism when he loses.

Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 08:24 (five years ago)

Good luck US! We're all counting on you!

My plan is to just look at ILX throughout the day, turn my phone off at midnight, and not turn it back on until around 9am UK time. Good luck us/US.

I’m nearly done with Tuesday 3rd of November, you’re welcome to it. Good luck USA

From the "Americans Prepare" piece in the NYT:
_For Mr. Tump, the race’s waning days have been a characteristically chaotic closing stretch_

Why did they have to stumble on the perfect nickname ONE DAY before the election?

“No, YOU’RE the race’s!
I think this interview is over.”

“B-b-but Mr. Tump...”

Watching the dumbest, most distracting comedy I can find tonight and then taking a sleeping pill straight afterwards, anything to avoid waking up at 4am and feeling driven to check the results.

how are we feeling about gloria la riva's chances

it bangs for thee (Simon H.), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 12:16 (five years ago)

I'll peek in here throughout the workday but then I'm going full Rollins and disconnecting myself until tomorrow morning. That thing my heart did on election night 2016, where it literally felt like it was chiseling its way through my ribcage all night long? I need to not experience that again.

Thank u 2 all international posters wishing us luck. I wish you all had the opportunity to cast your own votes. I mean, we've dispelled with (manically swigs from water bottle) all other norms at this point, so why not?

You laugh, but I'd venture to say that her policy positions are closer to the ILX mean than Biden's. In a less skewed and stupid world she'd receive some percentage of the vote.

I have horrible tendinitis in my knee and can’t tire myself out with exercise because walking even a few blocks is painful, so I have been waking up at 5am since the clocks went back. This cannot continue. Tonight may be the night I double up on Naproxen.

Rather than try to chill out last night I put on It’s Alive by the Ramones and L.A.M.F., and I think I’m going to just play loud music all day.

I have to write a review of a Peter Brötzmann album today, so at least I have music I can justify playing over and over at wall-cracking volume.

I’m going in hard, all TV all the time. Taking day off work tomorrow.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 13:19 (five years ago)

My company announced yesterday afternoon that it was shutting down today to allow everyone to vote. I was thinking I'd have preferred having off tomorrow instead.

the colour out of space (is the place) (PBKR), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 13:22 (five years ago)

I woke up at 4:30am to give my daughter a ride to the poll location she's working (something she signed up and trained to do all on her own). The day slowly came into focus: it's dark, it's early, I've got to drive her to the poll place, oh, wait, the poll place! It's election day! And then the gravity of the situation quickly became clear and for a second I thought I was going to barf. But I didn't. I think this will be a day of lots of deep breaths.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 13:23 (five years ago)

About 100 people in line to vote in Shaker Heights, OH - took about 40 minutes. It moved along very quickly. Many more young people volunteering at the polls than the last time I voted in person (2004).

When I left the line was down to about 5.

Took tomorrow off from work. Drinking brandy 2nite.

a certain derecho (brownie), Tuesday, 3 November 2020 13:24 (five years ago)

Also off tomorrow, also up all night. Did this for the first time in 2004 (I think I bailed in 2000 the first time they called Florida) - the night of dubious post-facto CNN exit poll tweaks and Ohio weirdness. I said "never again", but 2008 was literally a party.

I'm not going near the NYT needle(s). (I will).

I am going to grade, do some practice quizzes for the AMA style exam I have to take soon, and read Brossard. And take a hike w/ the pup and a fat joint.

Booze comes out at 5 or so, when I start roasting the bird and hopefully not panicking.

Won't be staying up, as I've stayed up the last two nights on deadline and am lol British. I'm reasonably confident Biden will win, though not so confident that we'll know tomorrow. But I have to be honest, if Trump wins again, or even "wins"... I don't really know what happens after that, or how to maintain whatever sliver of optimism and hope I've been cradling the last four years.

Chipping in as another longtime lurker as well. I have very much appreciated this community's running commentary and analysis on the broken state of US politics (and on everything else, of course).

Due to a work assignment, about a year ago, I moved to NE PA -- my specific portion, solidly Trump country. (Behind enemy lines...) I handed in my absentee ballot about a week ago.

Praying for a Biden win; I know it'll probably take weeks to sort out.

better than spending the rest of the day at the burrito stall.

peace, man, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 14:14 (five years ago)

here's a reason for optimism - typically for a re-election bid, the incumbent's approval rating correlates very strongly with their vote share. Trump is unique in American history in that he is the only president to never crack a 50% approval rating - he's pretty much sat at 44% his entire term. meaning you can expect him to win about 44% of the vote, in which case he's going to get crushed - 46% got him over the finish line in 2016, but that was with strong 3rd party support, which doesn't exist this year (if Clinton had won 20% of Gary Johnson's vote in WI, she would've taken the state). if Trump gets 44% then Biden's getting 54% and this thing will be over before midnight.

On Fox News, Kayleigh McEnany just predicted a Trump landslide. Says Trump will win NV and MN. Just so you know what Fox viewers are expecting.
