i genuinely think a significant portion of america is willing to intentionally confuse reporting with causation and blame "liberal media" for the spread with the old "if you had only stopped talking about it, it would've gone away" argument.

well sure, but what about the flu? every year it kills just as many as covid-19, and i don't hear anyone making a big fuss about it. but the liberal media turned it into a madhouse to get trump out, because they don't like how he calls them out.

I've lived in michigan most of my life, in both the upper and lower peninsula, and live here now. I love it and hate it too but don't feel it's necessarily worse than other places I've lived; rural places are rural places everywhere and are more alike than not in my experience - if you've never been outside of Seattle, for example, the rest of Washington State will surprise you.

It does feel amplified here though as our largest and most famous city has a long history or racism and extreme levels of white flight and segregation and industrial job loss that really informs how a lot of how people in rural places think about big cities, combined with the vast majority of the population living in a relatively small area and a whole lot of empty rural space with declining overwhelmingly white populations and no real future unless you can get tourists to visit.

Xpost Does that militia leader have eyeglasses and an eyepatch? Shouldn't he be wearing a monocle? That's what a real nazi would be wearing.

New Monmouth poll of Georgia, trend from September:

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 17:03 (five years ago)

yeah idk I've seen a lot of analysis saying "it's more likely things are gonna swing further towards Biden in the last week" which I didn't really believe but yeah it turns out Trump tripling down on everything that makes him unpopular isn't really working

frogbs, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 17:04 (five years ago)

A whole lot of people walked into the voting booth in November 2016 and thought, "How bad could he be?" They've gotten their answer, every hour of every day for four years.

I'm from rural Wisconsin and even I do not know a single person who is voting Trump this year who did not in 2016. on the other hand I know at least 7 who voted Trump/3rd Party/Didn't Vote in 2016 who are going Biden this year because they are so fucking sick of him

frogbs, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 17:11 (five years ago)

btw one thing about that Georgia poll, Monmouth frequently leans R so this is a giant red flag for the GOP

frogbs, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 17:12 (five years ago)

Here the local Pizza Hut gives u half off if you say you're voting Trump.

Not half off the cost, they just throw half your pizza in the trash

In new Marquette Law School Poll, Joe Biden is the choice for president of 48% of likely WI voters, Donald Trump is the choice of 43%. Libertarian Jo Jorgensen supported by 2%, and 8% gave no choice. #mulawpoll

that poll really hasn't budged all year

frogbs, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 17:23 (five years ago)

Pretty sure Jo won't get 2%, thirty parties often poll better than they actually do

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 28 October 2020 17:24 (five years ago)

5% is still good!

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 28 October 2020 17:24 (five years ago)

key finding there is Biden is winning independents by 8 points, yet another thing that absolutely cannot hold if Trump is going to make this thing even close

frogbs, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 17:26 (five years ago)

v surprised to see a poll where Biden is doing better in Georgia than most polls show him doing in North Carolina. seems impossible to imagine him winning the former but not the latter, so hopefully it's both.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Wednesday, 28 October 2020 17:29 (five years ago)

Biden voters who wish to eat a half-off Pizza Hut pizza should just go in and say "I'm voting for Trump" while smiling and holding up a written sign that clearly states "No way in hell is that true!"

In response to the Marquette poll

This is surely the best of the day for Trump by far, and it’s the gold standard pollster for the state showing him down 5 and at 43 as an incumbent https://t.co/qvDe2bsO55

Even Wasserman's starting to hedge a bit on the 'don't interpret volume of early vote as a sign' stance in this thread -- in a very specific circumstance, but even so, one wonders.

In Sumter Co., FL, as of this morning 72,695 out of 105,612 registered voters (69%) have already voted - which I believe is the highest turnout rate outside of auto-VBM states.

probably refers to whoever wrote that notorious NYT op-ed saying that high administration officials were actively but secretly working to undermine, delay or bury Trump's most dangerous decisions, because they feared for the nation if he were allowed to exercise the full power of his office without restraint.

the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Wednesday, 28 October 2020 17:56 (five years ago)

Aimless is correct -- Conway links said op-ed in his tweet.

And if that's the case and he holds, then assuming Jones loses in Alabama as is likely, there'd have to be four Democratic victories to tie in the Senate, five for a majority.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 18:10 (five years ago)

Just read the NYT story in full, thanks.

― Ned Raggett,

Isn't it three wins + VP Harris tie breaking and four for the outright majority?

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 October 2020 18:11 (five years ago)

Well yes but that's why I mentioned Jones -- that changes it from 53 GOP to 54. Collins, Gardner and McSally all appear to be toast one way or another at last check, so add in any one of Ernst, Tillis, Graham, Perdue and Loeffler (though runoffs likely in the latter two cases) and things are at least even/tiebreak. Two of them, excellent, and run up the score from there if possible.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 18:12 (five years ago)

I mean, if Jones gets reelected, great! I'm just not hopeful.
