Bloomberg-funded ad aimed at Cuban-Americans in Florida, really interested to hear what Alfred thinks about this

― Guayaquil (eephus!),

It may work. I posted this here yesterday afternoon: https://www.newyorker.com/news/us-journal/how-pro-trump-disinformation-is-swaying-a-new-generation-of-cuban-american-voters

I saw an article on Twitter this morning about Rogan going in on the media ignoring the laptop story and I'm still shook by the cesspool in the replies, even for the state of Twitter in 2020. Just an entire alternate universe out there about this story.

Since I met my wife, I've spent a lot of time in Michigan over the last 15 years. It never fails to surprise me. I love the state and I hate the state.

xxxpost the crankverse is convinced that the media is ignoring the Hunter Biden story until after the election, so Nancy and Chuck can impeach Biden in January and install Comrade Kamala

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Wednesday, 28 October 2020 13:55 (five years ago)

they are going to remove Nancy as speaker, install AOC as speaker, then impeach both Biden and Kamala, installing AOC as President, despite no being old enough.

Well birth certificates can be altered, as we well know

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Wednesday, 28 October 2020 14:00 (five years ago)

I struggle with my love for Michigan. I love Ann Arbor and Detroit and the Upper Peninsula is some of the most beautiful land I've ever been on in the continental United States. But the rampant casual racism and hate makes it really hard to fully embrace the state. The number of pick-ups I've seen with full on gun racks and confederate flags in Northern Michigan is frankly astounding.

I'd much rather wander the wilds of Michigan than boring Illinois. So much great stuff in Michigan, but nothing really worthwhile in IL outside of Chicago, afaict. As far as guns go, why have I always known the term "Michigan Militia?" Why Michigan?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 14:04 (five years ago)

There's going to be a ton of attention on Texas next week, and Trump is going to end up winning it by 2 points, which will be spun into a massive loss for Dems even though they've won a landslide elsewhere

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Wednesday, 28 October 2020 14:05 (five years ago)

this is true to some degree for every state i've been in tbh. so disillusioning

I don't know, it seems much more amplified and open in Michigan. I mean, I grew up in the cornfields central Illinois and saw plenty of casual racism and idiots, but the only confederate flags I remember seeing were on the t-shirts and coke mirrors when the carnival rolled through town every summer, I can't recall seeing any full flags flown on the back of pickups. Last time we drove up from Ann Arbor to Bay City, I saw no less than 8 or 9 trucks with fill sized confederate flags anchored to the back. It really is a different world in Michigan.

Nhex, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 14:12 (five years ago)

Nhex, yeah, it's baffling. Which makes it even more shocking.

Eh, Kid Rock's idea of "Northern Michigan" is the suburbs north of Detroit.

Not really. Florida 2018 swung in the opposite direction than the rest of the country. It’s not that it didn’t swing far enough to flip which is what we expect of Texas. Florida swung the wrong way.

West Michigan is my entire heart but it's not because of the people, it's because of the landscape (mostly the lakes).

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Wednesday, 28 October 2020 14:56 (five years ago)

Early vote total now 73 million — *seven* million from yesterday morning. Whether or not that’s a new average who knows but it’s looking pretty clear we’ll hit 80 million at some point tomorrow before noon and 90 million by Saturday morning if not earlier. 100 million by Election Day morning increasingly possible.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 14:57 (five years ago)

That's where my father in law lives and I really could never stand to live there. It's such a weird city, a lot of people struggling economically but also a sprinkling of super, super rich people all united in their casual racism. I was slightly heartened to see more Biden signs than Trump signs when I was last up that way.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 28 October 2020 15:10 (five years ago)

There was a dude a couple grades older than me who had confederate flag on his pickup truck. Early 90s. In the Chicago suburbs. There was always talk that he was about to get his ass kicked for it but never happened.

Is anyone else getting 20 somewhat unhinged emails a day from Jaime Harrison? The one with the subject line “are you up?” is my favorite.

JoeStork, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 15:14 (five years ago)

I wish election day was like three weeks ago. I know a lot of people have already voted but I'm starting to worry there's a sizable contingent who sees the beginning of a really shitty COVID winter ahead of us and would rather adopt Trump's magical thinking than confront reality. basically you have one candidate saying "this is a real thing that sucks but we're going to get through it" and another saying "everything is already fine, do whatever you want, live it up"

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Wednesday, 28 October 2020 15:17 (five years ago)

Arkansas and Michigan were admitted together to keep the slave/free dynamic going. Hearing about confederate flags being flown up there makes me go 50%-wtf and 50%-lol, Michigan gonna be Michigan.

Funny thing is that most of the people I know with Michigan ties are African Americans whose not-so-distant ancestors moved from the Delta to Detroit.

TEXAS continues to be a stunner: Texas voters cast more than 8.1 million votes, 91% of total 2016 vote, so far according to data posted on the Texas Secretary of State website Wednesday morning. 6 days until election day.

COVID's devastating Wisconsin now, so to respond to pplains' post, it's possible Wisconsin residents will vote fully aware of what the president has wrought.

But...but...Nate Silver says it's a "persuasion election" and turnout is meaningless...

Early voting data can maaaayyybee give you some hints at *turnout*, but

i) it's by party registration, not party ID
ii) there's usually not a great way to tell how much the early vote is cannibalizing the late vote
iii) this is a persuasion election not a turnout one
