I struggle with my love for Michigan. I love Ann Arbor and Detroit and the Upper Peninsula is some of the most beautiful land I've ever been on in the continental United States. But the rampant casual racism and hate makes it really hard to fully embrace the state. The number of pick-ups I've seen with full on gun racks and confederate flags in Northern Michigan is frankly astounding.

I'd much rather wander the wilds of Michigan than boring Illinois. So much great stuff in Michigan, but nothing really worthwhile in IL outside of Chicago, afaict. As far as guns go, why have I always known the term "Michigan Militia?" Why Michigan?

Last time we drove up from Ann Arbor to Bay City, I saw no less than 8 or 9 trucks with fill sized confederate flags anchored to the back. It really is a different world in Michigan.

i feel like this has changed a lot all over since i was a kid, i see that shit back in my hometown now all the time, never would have seen that growing up (not that it wasn't racist but not in that type of way, confederate flags etc)

You guys, there have always been a bunch of shithead Northerners who fly Confederate flags; I think people just assumed they were Lynyrd Skynyrd fans and didn't interrogate what they were seeing.

I have a family member who worked for the Bay City health dept for years and absolutely LOATHES it there because of the people.

West Michigan is my entire heart but it's not because of the people, it's because of the landscape (mostly the lakes).

Early vote total now 73 million — *seven* million from yesterday morning. Whether or not that’s a new average who knows but it’s looking pretty clear we’ll hit 80 million at some point tomorrow before noon and 90 million by Saturday morning if not earlier. 100 million by Election Day morning increasingly possible.
