Well.. it wasn't quite the shitshow everyone was hoping for.

With Texas on the edge, Biden saying basically “yeah, we wanna take you out” was a HUGE gaffe.

Ugh. I feel like Trump goaded Biden into telling the truth -- that, in the long run, we are going to have to transition to primarily renewable energy production -- and that truth is going to help Trump more than any of the immensely stupid falsehoods Trump uttered tonight is going to help Biden.

Biden had already said that renewable jobs are $50 an hour jobs; it was a big fuckup not to reiterate that after the Houston attack from Trump.

Biden should be better at this than he is. Nearly every time Trump pivoted, Joe ran after the pivot point to rebut, like a cat after earbuds. Pretty poor performance, really.

The good news is almost no one made it to the end of the debate.

Funniest part of this debate was when Biden said to Trump "I don't where you come from," and Trump responded under his breath "Queens."

nothing about this performance is going to help or hurt anybody. the cake is baked, people know who they're voting for at this point.

basically the fact that Biden didn't get trounced in any of the two debates, and that Trump had negative takeaways from his first debate and his townhall = the outcome we wanted.

now to avoid any October surprises for a week and a half.

Can't see that anything big will come out of that. I worry a tiny bit that the bar is so low for Trump at this point--especially after the past two or three weeks--that just being coherent and sort of normal (independent of the truth of whatever he says), being combative but not crazy and interrupting, then that's enough. Biden was fine--he got tangled up a lot (I think he said "prevailing wages" at one point), but was always able to right himself within a few seconds and make his point.

This seemed shorter than usual.

Prediction: trump numbers up very marginally after tonight, doesn’t alter the outcome BUT Dems will not take Texas (which was a long shot anyhow, but what a sweeeet longshot to shoot for)

biden mostly fucked this up and trump, despite everything he said being bullshit, horrifying, or both, mostly did not, so this does worry me

yeah, first reaction is this won't change anything, which is very bad for trump

no way will Trump's numbers edge upwards. third debates (ok, 'second' debate in this case) rarely generate any prolonged bounce.

if Trump gets a bounce, it'll be based on voter trends from within the last week unrelated to the debate, or something that happens between now and then that we don't know about yet.

Texas is a bit of a reach, but if Biden doesn't win it, it has little to do with tonight IMO
