It's horrible. The laptops. We need to talk about them

Evan, Tuesday, 20 October 2020 20:40 (five years ago)

I love that the media has a seemingly inexhaustible supply of photos of Rudy making "Whaaaat? Dead hooker? In my car trunk?" faces.

but also fuck you (unperson), Tuesday, 20 October 2020 20:41 (five years ago)

That's a weird way to say "shit in my pants"

i just don't understand why photos of hunter biden with a crackpipe has anything to do with joe biden.

do these people not have family members with drug problems? lucky them.

"Texas deliberately did away with the straight-ticket option "...wait what? Sorry I've only ever voted in California. Do you mean that there are boxes in some places that just say "vote for all members of x party"? that's fucking dumb. Or maybe it isn't, dunno, but I had no idea.

akm, Tuesday, 20 October 2020 20:50 (five years ago)

removing the option to vote straight ticket reduces participation in down ballot races, increases spoiled ballots, and makes it take longer to vote. it's a classic voter suppression tactic.

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Tuesday, 20 October 2020 20:52 (five years ago)

Looks like there are only 6 states that still allow straight-ticket voting. Illinois got rid of it the year I turned 18, so I've never experienced it.

jaymc, Tuesday, 20 October 2020 20:55 (five years ago)

as someone who frequently searches for the highest resolution image possible before cropping it to the most intense close-up possible

The social media staffer who captioned that photo with a reference to "uniquely granular" data is the hero of the day

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 20 October 2020 21:00 (five years ago)

dunno, never in 30 years has California had straight ticket voting I guess (unless I've completely forgotten about it)

akm, Tuesday, 20 October 2020 21:02 (five years ago)

The non-responsive touchscreen made voting by individual race take quite a bit longer than in 2018. NBD for one person but multiplied by dozens or hundreds of people in line at a polling place, that alone is an effective suppression tactic.

It's naive to think that a President's close family isn't going to be an issue in an election. Tricky Dick's brother getting a loan from Howard Hughes was an issue 60 years ago.

almost all of the choices on a CA ballot are non-partisan. the voter in my house (i.e. not me) got a ballot with 3 partisan elections (statehouse, US congress and US president) and 26 non-partisan elections (everything else). straight ticket voting doesn't help with that kind of ballot.

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Tuesday, 20 October 2020 21:11 (five years ago)

Yeah in Va. our ballots generally always include nonpartisan school board seats, referendums, bond issues, stuff like that.

The Associated Press, while investigating how Trump plowed through a billion dollars during the campaign, found this interesting detail: A web of limited liability companies hid more than $310 million in spending from disclosure, records show.https://t.co/PzK64wS85O

So are those things partisan choices in other areas? sorry if I'm being obtuse. I know not everyone has the same initiative madness CA does, but we have statehouse, president, senate, house of reps, assembly, city council, etc. sure it would be easier for me to just pic the Dem slate for that but I've never actually wanted to do that. but I vote slowly from home over the course of two weeks normally so speed isn't a consideration for me.

Trump already whining about Lesley Stahl, guessing the 60 Minutes interview did not go so well

frogbs, Tuesday, 20 October 2020 21:29 (five years ago)

Apparently he stormed out before they could film the intended last part.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 20 October 2020 21:31 (five years ago)

xxxp - If you voted straight party here, it skipped you to the non-partisan races and ballot measures.

I almost always voted straight party because I'd never vote for a Republican and it's not worth the extra effort to abstain from voting for really shitty Democrats (which was never an issue anyway since until Obama '12 I never voted for an incumbent Democrat).

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Tuesday, 20 October 2020 21:32 (five years ago)

I was just listening to some NPR story catching up with Pensacola Trump voters from 2016, and it totally buried the lede that they were extreme prosperity Christians or some bullshit. Turns out they still support him, go figure. What a waste of my time for a dog bites man story.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 20 October 2020 21:33 (five years ago)

i heard that, it provided no insight whatsoever

global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 20 October 2020 21:39 (five years ago)

Stahl kept bringing up the boring covid thing and didn't want to talk about the laptop.

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 20 October 2020 21:41 (five years ago)

basically everything is non-partisan in southern california (including the big ones, mayor, council, etc.)

straight ticket also doesn't work in CA because we switched to a top two primary in 2010. pretty much every non-primary is two nominally non-partisan members of the same party running against each other. the democratic party likes it that way for obvious reasons, so has no incentive to set up the kind of endorsement process that would allow straight ticket voting even in a top-two primary.

oh shit she didn't wear a mask?! stahl has lost my vote.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 20 October 2020 21:47 (five years ago)

I mean, America *hates* Lesley Stahl already, but this will seriously push her chances for the White House off a cliff.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 20 October 2020 21:48 (five years ago)

some people are saying 45 minutes is enough, 60 minutes totally wasteful

president of my cat (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 20 October 2020 21:54 (five years ago)

So! Our president grants 60 Minutes an interview, ostensibly for good press in the less than two weeks remaining before ED. He storms off. He attacks Leslie Stahl on Twitter.

He's won reelection. Genius.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 October 2020 21:55 (five years ago)

thing is - patriots don't trust 60 minutes

president of my cat (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 20 October 2020 21:56 (five years ago)

what is the most swing votery thing to watch? 60 minutes has to be up there?

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Tuesday, 20 October 2020 21:58 (five years ago)

i always imagined them as people who do not watch or read anything related to news or current events

president of my cat (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 20 October 2020 22:00 (five years ago)

I always assumed at least 40% of the 60 Minutes audience was NFL fans that fell asleep during a slow second half in the late afternoon game.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 20 October 2020 22:02 (five years ago)

i'm assuming "swing votery" means "undecided", since almost everyone else feels very strongly one way or another.

and for the undecideds, do they watch news? nothing against wheel of fortune, but i think the wheel is probably more interesting to them

president of my cat (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 20 October 2020 22:02 (five years ago)

from 2019
Ratings are not a problem at 60 Minutes in 2019. Though the show airs the same time as some NFL games, it has averaged 10.5 million viewers since its 52nd season premiered on September 29. That represents a 4% improvement over the prior season.

The show continues finding an audience for its in-depth look at political issues of the day. A good example would be the November 17 edition that featured Scott Pelley’s report on red-flag gun laws. That show had an audience of 13.2 million viewers.

For a little perspective, the November 17 showing was the biggest TV audience any non-sports program had all week. And it was the No. 3 show of the entire week (sports or not), according to Nielsen ratings.

The best ratings news of all for CBS is the growth 60 Minutes has posted in the coveted 18-49 year-old demographic. While cable-news shows often lag in this department, 60 Minutes is up 18.5% this season with its 1.45 rating.

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 20 October 2020 22:05 (five years ago)

Vast improvement over that previous 1.26 rating.

I'll defend 60 Minutes. It's good!

I don't know how to link DJT Twitter, but: I am pleased to inform you that, for the sake of accuracy in reporting, I am considering posting my interview with Lesley Stahl of 60 Minutes, PRIOR TO AIRTIME! This will be done so that everybody can get a glimpse of what a FAKE and BIASED interview is all about...
