they're no more key to his lead than anyone else who also voted for clinton four years ago.

there's no reason to pay more attention to them than the (much bigger) groups of people who have changed from staying home to voting, or from obama to trump.

and there is no need to pander to them. they have no one else to vote for.

Laptop is just the new email. It's a word. It is memorable. It alludes to shadiness. It'll catch on a bit probably. COVID? Yes, sure but what about the laptop? Where is the laptop? When are we going to talk about the laptop? We. need. answers. about. this. LAPTOP! It's so catchy and quotable like a good Seinfeld gag. Nothing deeper than that matters at all.

Evan, Monday, 19 October 2020 20:38 (five years ago)

oh lmao it's scott rasmussen.

well, if that pollster is known for anything it's inflating Republican numbers.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 19 October 2020 20:46 (five years ago)

Final weeks of 2016: massive Dem denial about district-level polling that showed Trump breaking through (see replies to this tweet).

Final weeks of 2020: massive Dem paranoia, even though district-level polling consistently shows Trump running well behind his '16 margins. https://t.co/2oAGSUfRU1

Trump's idea of the Adkins diet is very different from mine.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 19 October 2020 21:36 (five years ago)

I watched Avengement last week. It's on Netflix. It's pretty good.

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 19 October 2020 21:38 (five years ago)

wait, why did Toobin do that?

avellano medio inglés (f. hazel), Monday, 19 October 2020 21:47 (five years ago)

Toobin's explanation that he thought the video was muted and no one could see him doesn't really explain why he did that, but only why he thought he wouldn't be publicly embarrassed by doing it.

the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Monday, 19 October 2020 21:52 (five years ago)

It was over Zoom, he probably figured he would only be *virtually* embarrassed.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 19 October 2020 21:55 (five years ago)

he probably thought he could get away with having zoom running in the background while being muted and having his camera off. so he felt like he could do whatever he wanted and no one would known. and from there, you know, click a few links, have another glass of wine, one thing leads to another

treeship., Monday, 19 October 2020 21:56 (five years ago)

that's the most innocent explanation i can think of and it's still pretty gross. the other option is that it was in some sense intentional.

treeship., Monday, 19 October 2020 21:57 (five years ago)

Maybe he was just *being* a dick and contemptuously making the jerk off motion.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 19 October 2020 21:58 (five years ago)

def don't need two threads for Toobin's dick

Barely worth half a thread from what I heard.

No need to minimize the zoom window, if you know what I mean.

^ good news

While searching for Toobin's old swinger-club-set profile of Roger Stone earlier, I came across this August article featuring Stone attempting a characteristically, but still impressively, shameless attempt at rebranding as a grifter of megachurch patrons.

Covidiots from UHF (sic), Monday, 19 October 2020 23:35 (five years ago)

xp happy to read about that

Dan S, Monday, 19 October 2020 23:35 (five years ago)

dropped off my ballot today at the Civic Center, glad to be done with it.

I have been getting a robocall almost every day now to "re-elect Donald Trump". It's been increasing over the past few months. I've always been registered as a Democrat and have never voted for any Republican for any office in my entire life. I know this kind of stuff increases close to an election and I'm used to getting appeals from Democrats at election time, but this bugs me

Dan S, Monday, 19 October 2020 23:41 (five years ago)

If there's one thing you can count on from Trump and his supporters, it's that they will go to any length necessary to irritate liberals.

the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Monday, 19 October 2020 23:47 (five years ago)

To be really fucking clear, I would much rather have seven threads about people laughing about Jeffrey Toobin than seven threads of people reposting every single fucking thing Trump says and does

was glad about that Supreme Court split, but this from Mark Joseph Stern is disturbing:

Ian is right—tonight’s order from the Supreme Court is terrifying. Four conservative justices supported a radical theory that would empower state legislatures to violate election laws and engage in voter suppression with impunity. Only Roberts balked.https://t.co/gXyvND850U https://t.co/80uQmrhwhu
