Is there a general thread for Taiwanese cinema? Couldn't find one.
This doesn't look very arty, but that's where it will get screened. I've seen the trailer twice and it looks good, reminiscent of Eighth Grade and mid90s--opens here in a few days.

Saw Didi this afternoon. I don't think it's as good as the two films I mentioned, but there are a few great moments, especially one between Didi/Chris and his mother towards the end. Set in 2008, which you (or at least I) wouldn't know except for a calendar and a MySpace page. (I thought maybe the year wasn't accidental, but if I'm right, there's no specific acknowledgement in that direction.) Lots of music, but instead of "Oh, so that was them" when the credits came up, the only name I recognized was was Belle and Sebastian, a song I didn't know. Suspect there will be a procession of coming-of-age films in the coming years that go over familiar terrain, with the one huge difference that social media is at the centre. Nice to see Joan Chen again--I'm sure she's been working steadily, but my guess is that this is the first thing I've seen her in since Twin Peaks.

saw it a few months ago (festival) — it’s definitely no Eighth Grade, can’t remember anything about mid90s to compare. The period piece is extremely intentional though: the details of how social interaction was conducted, heightened and gamified are very specific to myspace, and the level that youtube and pocket-cameras were each at is essential to the opportunity for showing your team’s skills, the need for an adjunct 1cam shooter/editor, and the particular ways at which the applicant fails their gig so badly. Also F anyone reading’s I, the film is 1002% USAmerican (and not rly arthouse imo)
