DUBLIN — Laurita Blewitt knows how deep Joe Biden’s Irish roots run. When the White House contacted her to help put together a family lunch ahead of the then-vice president’s 2016 visit to Ireland, she struggled to limit the crowd.

“He’s loads of cousins living here, in and around Ballina, and that’s just one side of his Irish family,” said Blewitt, 37, a fourth cousin who lives near the County Mayo tourist town along the River Moy...

Why isn't Biden playing up this angle more? American love the Irish. He should be stopping the train in every rust belt town for a pint of Guinness and a plate of mushy malarkey peas.

Hillary has joined Pelosi in weighing in on the LA City Council

Following @BernieSanders' endorsement of challenger @nithyavraman, and @SpeakerPelosi's endorsement of incumbent @davideryu, today brings another bafflingly large endorsement in an otherwise small local race: @HillaryClinton has thrown her support behind Ryu for #CD4

some version of this is actually kinda true though lol

for this to work, hundreds of dedicated voters would have to be randomly selected to become Nielsen research households, then go out and buy dozens of TVs each, then convince Nielsen that hundreds of people of the exact demographics that Nielsen are looking to fill their pool with at that time have moved into their houses, then go around the house during not only the town hall, but a convincing proportion of everything they ever watch, pressing "confirm" on the button for each of the hundreds of people living in each home, every 35 minutes. at which point they realise that they'll actually need extra manpower to manage the timing, and actually get one or two dozen people to come and live in their house permanently in order to press the buttons. by which time, they're only inflating that house's figures by a factor of like 8-10, not hundreds and thousands, so it becomes fairly statistically negligible against the entire household pool.

Meantime, I know you all care:

NEW - Biden’s campaign looked into an endorsement from W, but it’s not coming. But if Biden wins and Trump causes chaos, Biden would lean on him to get involved.

Bush doesn’t want to get mixed up in any of it.https://t.co/ecN3Im3Qaa

The company's owners are Trump supporters and flew a Trump flag at their HQ. https://t.co/tAsKXQlOJL

Sanders endorsed my local city council person for re-election (in Berkeley) and she's the most incompetent person to ever sit on the city council by some measure. Of course she's pushed his endorsement all over the place. It doesn't matter, almost everyone hates her.

akm, Friday, 16 October 2020 20:19 (five years ago)

and as a result, I put little stock in any Sanders endorsements for city elections.

Politicians of any stripe making a big deal out of drinking a pint of Guinness is far, far worse than Hillary's hot sauce in the purse thing. Guinness is just cold dark piss. Hot sauce actually tastes good.

another data point

More than 900,000 ballots have been cast as of today; 643,000 by mail, 260,000 in early voting. That's more than 4x the number at this point in the 2016 election cycle. https://t.co/J5vAYtnm0a

brimstead, Saturday, 17 October 2020 01:19 (five years ago)

nothing more on brand for the modern Republican party than for Matt Gaetz to tweet out "I'll never love another president again" only for Trump to repeatedly refer to him as "Rick Gates"

frogbs, Saturday, 17 October 2020 01:20 (five years ago)

I keep seeing these outlier polls on RCP by some outfit called the Trafalgar Group: Trump up by 1 in Michigan (today), Trump up by 2 in Florida (Wednesday), Trump by 4 in Arizona (last Friday). They're so far from everything else you see. I googled them, and found them described as "a Georgia-based polling firm known for its ability to correctly sample hard-to-reach, conservative Trump voters"...but then looked at the site itself for three seconds, and a total right-wing clearing house. So I trust they can be ignored.

caek?

clemenza, Saturday, 17 October 2020 01:32 (five years ago)

I think the conventional wisdom is: Pay minimal attention to individual polls except from like 3 or 4 pollsters (nyt sienna, abc/wapo, etc.) Include the likes of trafalfar in your average but they do lean right, and they are shameless enough to admit they have an explicit *goal* of leaning IIUC which the left leaning pollsters claim no to.

Thread here explaining why hitting refresh on early vote counts tells you nothing much about the outcome except maybe some turnout hints

We've done three NC polls over the last year. We can join them up to the NC state absentee data, so we know whether they've voted early or not. Here's how they've split so far:
Abs: Biden 69, Trump 22 (n=295)
Early: Biden 55, Trump 35 (n=172)
No vote: Trump 46, Biden 42 (n=2083)

Dinglebarista (Neanderthal), Saturday, 17 October 2020 03:22 (five years ago)

Guinness is a surprisingly pleasant beer to shotgun. Low acidity offset by feeling like you chugged a milkshake.

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 17 October 2020 03:26 (five years ago)

Guinness is bad. It's like a version of a thing for people who think they like that thing but don't really know what that thing is because all they can ever find is that thing they think is the thing. Like Budweiser.
