It's making his fatness part of your overall hatred for him. It's making being fat a hateable characteristic.

I occasionally forget about the "right to be fat" thread and think ilx is full of progressive people who hate such singling out. It sometimes lasts weeks instead of days so maybe that's progress.

bodyshaming is usually a bellwether for other shitty behavior, imo

this wasn't aimed at anyone, btw - i didn't scroll upthread to see the posts that were being referenced

I mean, of course they are. This is the same deal when (White) people chomp at the bit to throw dubious racial insults at Candace Owens

They should just go back to wishing people were dead or crippled by infirmity but leave out the (dead) body-shaming. That's mean.

They should just go back to wishing people were dead or crippled by infirmity but leave out the (dead) body-shaming. That's mean.

Wishing ill on powerful, bad people is valid, if unsavoury. Calling people out as fat fucks on a board that fat people read is an insensitive dick move.

here we go, ten in a rona (onimo), Saturday, 10 October 2020 18:22 (five years ago)

Permitting or excusing body-shaming drives people away from ILX, and attracts bullies.

Whereas threads full of people wishing someone was dead is like a warm comforting embrace.

Young Boys of Bernie (Tom D.), Saturday, 10 October 2020 18:23 (five years ago)

no one reading this message board is dead

Neither are the people you lot are wishing were dead. That's how the wishing thing works.

Yeah, this is really not that complicated a distinction!

I don't understand what's so hard to grasp about this. Body-shaming insults have a collateral impact on people who didn't do anything wrong. Wishing death on someone doesn't involve stigmatizing a general characteristic in the same way.

jmm, Saturday, 10 October 2020 18:33 (five years ago)

even the "Orange Man Bad" shit, cringe as it is, we can at least pretty safely assume there isn't a contingent of orange ILXors cringing through that shit out of personal affront

feel like insulting/bodyshaming/wishing death on Fellow Message Board Posters is probably grounds for a ban from a Message Board, but insulting/bodyshaming/wishing death on public figures who aren't afawk Fellow Message Board Posters is probably not. but thank you for your protective hypervigilance W.M.C.

Being reported that Trump was scheduled to speak for 30 minutes, but ended at 17. When was the last time Mr. Babble McStamina went *under* his allotted time?

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:20 (five years ago)

If it’s not ok to direct racial slurs at black republicans it’s not ok to call Chris Christie a “tub of lard” this is extremely basic stuff what is wrong with you

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:24 (five years ago)

this isn't about whether or not it's "ok" to call Chris a fat tub of lard. it's about whether or not I should be removed from the community for it.

it's not "ok" to laugh at someone for having a disease either. do we really need to have this conversation

I flagged that post so yes xp

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:31 (five years ago)

so, calling a politician a fat tub of lard is a worse and more bannable offense than celebrating the news that they've contracted a potentially fatal disease? do I have that right?

the burrito that defined a generation, Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:35 (five years ago)

Sure. “I hope bad things happen to this person because they are a Republican” seems fine to me. There’s even a strong utilitarian argument for it in this case.

Not sure how to compare that to a non sequitur about someone’s weight.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:40 (five years ago)

I'm not in favor of calling out people for being fat, even heinous ones like Christie, but burrito does kind of have a point there

Nhex, Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:43 (five years ago)

I don't hate Chris Christie. He's a funny, charming, likeable dude. I don't agree with his policies, but he pours bags of M&Ms into larger bags of M&Ms at baseball games, and that is adorable. I don't want Chris Christie to get sick or die. But the truth is, he's a fat tub of lard, and the phrase "fat tub of lard" is funny to me so I use it once every few years when talking about people like Chris Christie who wobble around in their little suits vindictively ordering unnecessary bridge lane closures.

the burrito that defined a generation, Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:44 (five years ago)

xp I'm not "in favor of it" either, but I did it.

the burrito that defined a generation, Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:44 (five years ago)

engaging in bodyshaming inherently insults people other than the people you imagine you're targeting, and it contributes to a shitty, fatshaming culture that causes real psychological and medical harm. it's bad, and it's also bad for this board.

also, fwiw, i have been exposed to a fair amount of fat activism for a non-fat person, and i have never seen anyone carve out a "well, if they're turning the tables on a bad person, then that's okay" exception.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:45 (five years ago)

wow burrito you need to stfu

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:45 (five years ago)

“I hope bad things happen to this person because they are a Republican” seems fine to me

I disagree that it's "fine" to hope bad things happen to anyone, but because I'm a tolerant and open-minded person, I won't fp you for it.

the burrito that defined a generation, Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:46 (five years ago)

That all makes sense but would you consider ... not using that phrase? xp

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:46 (five years ago)

lol why is this conversation still happening

shout-out to his family (DJP), Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:47 (five years ago)

Doctor Casino, you are right, which is why I would never bodyshame anyone on this board or anyone I personally know.

I wonder if telling people to stfu contributes to any particular sort of culture

the burrito that defined a generation, Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:48 (five years ago)

That all makes sense but would you consider ... not using that phrase?

yes, actually, now that I've been threatened to have my e-existence obliterated over it, I'll probably say it 0 times in my next 10 years here instead of the maybe 1 more time I might've

the burrito that defined a generation, Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:50 (five years ago)

Doctor Casino, you are right, which is why I would never bodyshame anyone on this board or anyone I personally know.

I would never direct a racial slur at anyone on this board or anyone I personally know (even the ones I think “sound funny”).

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:50 (five years ago)

if you're going around promulgating "fat tub of lard" as a funny thing to call people, *you are bodyshaming people on this board*

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:50 (five years ago)

I guess you're right, Doctor Casino. I am sorry for intentionally shaming people on this board.

the burrito that defined a generation, Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:51 (five years ago)

your "e-existence" would be threatened in this case only by continuing to act like a troll and a jerk fyi

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:53 (five years ago)

so, calling a politician a fat tub of lard is a worse and more bannable offense than celebrating the news that they've contracted a potentially fatal disease? do I have that right?

― the burrito that defined a generation, Saturday, October 10, 2020 2:35 PM

Sure, and ILXors have the right to FP you. This isn't about rights, it's about consequences.

(show hidden tics) (WmC), Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:53 (five years ago)

The thing is it’s actually much funnier to call someone svelte tub of lard

shout-out to his family (DJP), Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:53 (five years ago)

Sure, and ILXors have the right to FP you. This isn't about rights, it's about consequences.

I've got a right to FP people who think it's OK to wish someone who has contracted Covid-19 dies or, at the very least, suffers possible life-changing consequences from it? That's acceptable? Right?

Young Boys of Bernie (Tom D.), Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:57 (five years ago)

I would never direct a racial slur at anyone on this board or anyone I personally know (even the ones I think “sound funny”).

For one thing, it seems unwise to conflate bodyshaming with racial slurs, and I would advise you to not go that rhetorical route. For another, if you're suggesting that I'm a big fan of racial slurs in my private life, well, you're free to think that but you'd be wrong.

Sure, and ILXors have the right to FP you. This isn't about rights, it's about consequences.

ILXors have the right to flag whatever posts they want to flag, without consequences. It's on the mods to sort through it and make the right decision.

the burrito that defined a generation, Saturday, 10 October 2020 20:00 (five years ago)

You have the right to FP someone for wishing you nothing but good health and long life. You have the right to FP someone for posting "xp". Go for it! But there are thresholds to pass before that FP effects any change.

(show hidden tics) (WmC), Saturday, 10 October 2020 20:00 (five years ago)

Yes, but we all know that some FPs are officially sanctioned and some are dismissed.

Young Boys of Bernie (Tom D.), Saturday, 10 October 2020 20:02 (five years ago)

What are you talking about? Examples of sanctioned/dismissed, please, so I don't misunderstand your accusation.

(show hidden tics) (WmC), Saturday, 10 October 2020 20:10 (five years ago)

What accusation? I thought if someone FPed for something the mods consider trivial or unworthy they don't count it?

Young Boys of Bernie (Tom D.), Saturday, 10 October 2020 20:12 (five years ago)

Have I got that wrong?

Young Boys of Bernie (Tom D.), Saturday, 10 October 2020 20:12 (five years ago)
