Freedom of movement & association limited to whites & cons due to the “black commies stay put” act of ‘70

The amazing first half I get--basically, be thankful you get to move around freely like the rest of us--it's the "you just need to be conservative, not liberal" part that's perplexing.

clemenza, Saturday, 10 October 2020 15:24 (five years ago)

i heard it as an immensely terrible attempt at a joek more like "you can be any color as long as youre not a lieberal" thing, but i wouldn't bet against any level of racist shit from that mfer. hope he gets destroyed.

pence's eye juice (Hunt3r), Saturday, 10 October 2020 15:30 (five years ago)

It's very "I like both kinds of music, country *and" western." That is, you can come from any background and we will totally accept you, as long as you think and act "conservative," which is to say, in 2020, like an old white southern man.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 10 October 2020 15:37 (five years ago)

it means he's a fascist

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 10 October 2020 15:49 (five years ago)

i mean

are we seriously getting a fascist speech from a balcony tonight? holy shit this year is something else. i know that's the joke this year. i don't watch late night talk shows any more but i can picture it being a recurring theme: "2020! what else do you expect, haha!" but here i am, checking to see what time that i can look forward to watching my president watch out on a balcony, heroically take off his mask, and spit covid on his fans below as he tells them that they must dominate covid19 and never be afraid and also that kamala harris is a monster communist who is running the whole show. especially because he obviously thinks it will look really cool but doesn't realize he picked it up from footage of 1930s fascists

i opened up the refrigerator this morning and a large empty glass bottle fell off the top and hit me hard on top of my head. i'm not bleeding, but that is my excuse for today. vote or die

president of my cat (Karl Malone), Saturday, 10 October 2020 15:55 (five years ago)

Yes, and I hope they stick to that. If other ILXors are allowed to have their irrational fears about Trump invalidating the election and starting a second civil war then I’m allowed to have my own scary thoughts about Biden having to deal with a huge foreign policy nightmare his first few months in office.

balcony speech is simply because the guy cannot stand not being able to have rallies and get his instant feedback from his howling sycophants. His continual belief that this subset of people represents the entirety of the US is bewildering to me but then he is a fucking idiot.

Last fall, Trump picked The Villages to promote his support for Medicare and its private insurance option

But on Wednesday, an armada of 500 golf carts gathered there to caravan to the nearby elections office, so folks could drop off ballots for Biden https://t.co/PMxqF8BXOm

Oh, I assumed by "go anywhere" he meant achieve anything, not move around freely.

Alba, Saturday, 10 October 2020 16:50 (five years ago)

And the second part meant "being a liberal will hold you back".

Alba, Saturday, 10 October 2020 16:51 (five years ago)

yes I agree w Alba that they was exactly what he meant.

but imo there’s some heavy dog-whistling there, however conscious of it dear Lindsey may be

Want to know what's at stake this election? If we lose the Senate, socialist Bernie Sanders will become Budget Committee Chairman. If we hold the Senate, and I am re-elected, I will be Budget Committee Chairman.

i truly don't understand why ANY REPUBLICAN supports him, and i say this despite my parents calling him "our Lindsey" and loving everything he does. i have gained no understanding of why they support him, but they just like him being around, on their tv.

if you liked him before, you probably liked john mccain and the military, too. so why would you like him now? is trump the new "maverick" for graham to be a sidekick for? but trump has no respect for the military, so...huh

These senators are making purely ideological decisions and explaining them with claims they don’t believe about voter preferences because they know trump is going to lose and it makes no difference.

Biden is dodging the court packing issue. There’s electoral downsides to taking a position either way so that may be all he has in mind. But he’s doing it in such a way (explicitly refusing to take a position rather than just saying it’s a question for the senate or whatever) that it seems like he might actually support it.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 10 October 2020 18:08 (five years ago)

xp Yeah, Ezra Klein made that point after the debate:

Which made it all the more notable that when moderator Chris Wallace asked Biden to “tell the American people tonight whether or not you will support either ending the filibuster or packing the Court,” Biden refused. “Whatever position I take on that, that will become the issue,” he replied.

On the merits, this is a dodge. Those are consequential questions of governance, and Biden is running for president. His views are supposed to become flash points in the election. But in the context of all the sharp positions Biden did take, both for and against controversial policies, it was telling. Biden could have dismissed both ideas. At another time, he doubtlessly would have dismissed both ideas. That he refused to do so now reflects how far he’s moved, how far he believes his party has moved, or both.

1. Presidents don't decide the number of SC justices

2. Trump keeps telling us about plans (e.g. healthcare) without detail

3. "We'll see" us a totally understandable and defensible position these days

nonsensei (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:02 (five years ago)

calling it defensible is one thing, saying that it represents some kind of substantive shift in Biden's thinking because he didn't just say "nah, Jack" is silly

Saying no probably helps him with the kind of swing votes he needs, and if he felt that way he’d probably say so. he’s been clear on things like defunding the police, why not this?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Saturday, 10 October 2020 19:09 (five years ago)

his phrasing was bad, not giving a position is good

i know that's the joke this year. i don't watch late night talk shows any more but i can picture it being a recurring theme: "2020! what else do you expect, haha!"

Seth Meyers' show has a 12-min segment a couple of times a week written by a former news researcher, that carefully elucidates the previous day's major threats to life and democracy, lightly pasted over with just enough jokes to keep it entertaining. (On Thursday it graduated to its own prime-time half-hour timeslot as a pilot.) The others lean on "lol dumpster fire year, orange man fascist" a fair bit. Colbert is completely inadequate at it, coming off incredibly *rich white man talks to rich white families about how bad things are in the abstract voice* before going to a zoom conference with the cast of The West Wing. Surprisingly, Kimmel is the best at maintaining the glib suited monologue format while making the same style of jokes, but using them to convey to middle America how the fascism is bad.
