i dont think you can understand the trump phenomenon without recognizing how funny he is, its a huge part of his appeal to both his fans and the haters and losers
― đ đđ˘đ¨ (caek), Friday, 9 October 2020 20:02 (five years ago)
Yeah. People get off on the fact that he offends people. His preposterousness takes the edge off his wealth, makes him somehow ânot an elite.â
― treeship., Friday, 9 October 2020 20:03 (five years ago)
His rallies are 50% standup. Itâs the only substantive difference between him and regular openly racist republicans.
― đ đđ˘đ¨ (caek), Friday, 9 October 2020 20:03 (five years ago)
A clown president might not be so bad unfortunately this one is also a malignant narcissist and the populist forces he marshaled to victory were ethnonationalist ones
The quote that will stay in my heart forever:
"Do you still believe in Santa? Because at seven it's marginal, right?"

He tells the truthtalks the same trash as we do!
― She Thinks I Will Dare (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 9 October 2020 20:05 (five years ago)
I don't think he's "funny" at all and not just in a, "he's actually very dangerous" way, but even his so-called "punchlines" aren't funny in any sense of the word either, just the same dumb catchphrase bullshit that his supporters eat up and allow him time for that smug smile shit.
― soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 9 October 2020 20:08 (five years ago)
The coca cola tweet is the only actually funny thing he has done
― treeship., Friday, 9 October 2020 20:09 (five years ago)
The schlockiness of the performance â trumpâs performance of himself â can be sorta funny. Like the helicopter video with the epic music.
― treeship., Friday, 9 October 2020 20:11 (five years ago)
yeah as I mentioned upthread the Rosie O'Donnell thing was the one time he actually nailed a punchline of any sort. maybe also the "because you'd be in jail" thing too but that was more terrifying than funny. he's just an utterly absurd person, like Tommy Wiseau it's not so much the things he says as it is the broken mind that produces such bizarre non-sequiturs
― frogbs, Friday, 9 October 2020 20:11 (five years ago)
Whether he is leaning into that or oblivious idk. I think he knows he gets more attention as a human clown than a regular old hateful asshole
― treeship., Friday, 9 October 2020 20:12 (five years ago)
I thought his early republican debates were funny. Just seeing the mainstream GOP in a panic over what to do about this insult comedian on the stage, derailing their whole strategy.
― treeship., Friday, 9 October 2020 20:14 (five years ago)
Oh he's definitely a clown but I think describing him as "funny" gives him way more credit that he deserves, since that would imply wither being able to come up with something witty or delivering something in a clever way and I don't think I've ever seen a good example of him doing either.
― soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 9 October 2020 20:14 (five years ago)
An insult comic who only punches down is just a bully.

― treeship., Friday, 9 October 2020 20:16 (five years ago)

― DJI, Friday, 9 October 2020 20:17 (five years ago)
I mean, overall it was horrifying. For a moment it seemed like he was destroying the GOP, not America
― treeship., Friday, 9 October 2020 20:18 (five years ago)
he did destroy the GOP
the problem is that he did it by parasitically taking over its body rather than by obliterating it and the country said "come embrace me, malignant hate entity"
― shout-out to his family (DJP), Friday, 9 October 2020 20:20 (five years ago)
solely because the dumbest man to ever hold elected office said something that made people clap, once. imagine all the good things we could have done!! imagine if we had President Jeb!
Jeb also said something once that made people clap iirc

I mean, as I noted upthread (or maybe in the other thread) what was really funny about this was that the high production value schlocky helicopter video was followed by a video speech in which he said stuff like "Maybe I'm immune, I don't know!"
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 9 October 2020 20:45 (five years ago)
It's hard for me to think of any Trump moment where it's just like "that was a great joke." The humor is almost always partly horror. Like when he did the exceedingly long tangent about Steve Scalise getting shot at the baseball game and complimented Scalise for the fact that his wife cried when he got shot, and that Melania wouldn't have cried if Trump got shot. That's the epitome of Trump "funny" to me.
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 9 October 2020 20:50 (five years ago)
It's like Rodney Dangerfield but without full self-awareness.
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 9 October 2020 20:51 (five years ago)
It was a joke, it was meant as a joke, it worked as a joke, but it was also just like "what the fuck is wrong with this guy?"
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 9 October 2020 20:52 (five years ago)
these post could easily be read as you making the argument for trump being funny, which he obviously is, tho his routine might not be yr cup of tea
― lagân, Friday, 9 October 2020 20:56 (five years ago)
i'm already on record ITT saying he's funny. easily the funniest president of the mass media era.
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 9 October 2020 20:57 (five years ago)
low bar
― lagân, Friday, 9 October 2020 20:59 (five years ago)
His showmanship is all heâs got. Surely thatâs the one thing we canât take away from him.
― pomenitul, Friday, 9 October 2020 21:00 (five years ago)
yeah I guess that was unintentional damning with faint praise. But he's funny. Sometimes it's also a Howard Stern kind of funny, but it's just deeply jarring to see that in the context of the White House (maybe funnier in a way in the moments you can sufficiently detach yourself from it, which is not always possible)
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 9 October 2020 21:02 (five years ago)
it is extreme dark comedy but thats a big part of its allure, its abjectly nihilistic

was just gonna say if he were never president I'd love to have him on the stage at every future republican primary debate shit-talking everyone else
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 9 October 2020 21:08 (five years ago)
Such comic timing too. âShe should be runningâ is all-time imo.

If he loses this time, being on stage for future GOP primaries is still on the table.

just sitting there with an idiot grin plastered on my face, reveling in how the GOP and everyone who voted in lockstep w them *deserves* this. after W, Palin, the Tea Party/ Obama derangementâfinally these ppl were getting their comeuppance.

Love how Trump's handlers defend being cagey about his condition because of HIPAA. Which only really applies to health care providers/recordkeepers/doctors/etc.
Otherwise you're violating HIPAA for posting that your cousin broke his leg
