i dont think you can understand the trump phenomenon without recognizing how funny he is, its a huge part of his appeal to both his fans and the haters and losers

Yeah. People get off on the fact that he offends people. His preposterousness takes the edge off his wealth, makes him somehow “not an elite.”

His rallies are 50% standup. It’s the only substantive difference between him and regular openly racist republicans.

A clown president might not be so bad unfortunately this one is also a malignant narcissist and the populist forces he marshaled to victory were ethnonationalist ones

I don't think he's "funny" at all and not just in a, "he's actually very dangerous" way, but even his so-called "punchlines" aren't funny in any sense of the word either, just the same dumb catchphrase bullshit that his supporters eat up and allow him time for that smug smile shit.

yeah as I mentioned upthread the Rosie O'Donnell thing was the one time he actually nailed a punchline of any sort. maybe also the "because you'd be in jail" thing too but that was more terrifying than funny. he's just an utterly absurd person, like Tommy Wiseau it's not so much the things he says as it is the broken mind that produces such bizarre non-sequiturs

Oh he's definitely a clown but I think describing him as "funny" gives him way more credit that he deserves, since that would imply wither being able to come up with something witty or delivering something in a clever way and I don't think I've ever seen a good example of him doing either.

I mean, as I noted upthread (or maybe in the other thread) what was really funny about this was that the high production value schlocky helicopter video was followed by a video speech in which he said stuff like "Maybe I'm immune, I don't know!"

It's hard for me to think of any Trump moment where it's just like "that was a great joke." The humor is almost always partly horror. Like when he did the exceedingly long tangent about Steve Scalise getting shot at the baseball game and complimented Scalise for the fact that his wife cried when he got shot, and that Melania wouldn't have cried if Trump got shot. That's the epitome of Trump "funny" to me.

It's like Rodney Dangerfield but without full self-awareness.

It was a joke, it was meant as a joke, it worked as a joke, but it was also just like "what the fuck is wrong with this guy?"

yeah I guess that was unintentional damning with faint praise. But he's funny. Sometimes it's also a Howard Stern kind of funny, but it's just deeply jarring to see that in the context of the White House (maybe funnier in a way in the moments you can sufficiently detach yourself from it, which is not always possible)
