Trump surviving this but Christie dying would be so in character

rob, Saturday, 3 October 2020 23:51 (five years ago)

I liked reading this thread

With respect to COVID, race & class obviously stratify who is dying & how quickly, who has what kind of care, who is held up as "innocent" and who is held up as "facing the consequences of their own actions." So, we're all potentially exposed to it, but we're not all "the same."

Dan S, Saturday, 3 October 2020 23:57 (five years ago)

sorry, this was the first post in the thread

All this discussion of plagues, sympathy, and the ethical question of how and when to laugh at death is bringing me back to very vivid personal and painful memories from the height of the AIDS crisis. So, a thread here.

The photos released by the WH tonight of the president working at Walter Reed were taken 10 minutes apart at 5:25:59 pm and 5:35:40 pm ET Saturday, according to the EXIF data embedded in both @AP wire postings that were shared by the White House this evening. pic.twitter.com/EzeqIkGdf7

I don't think I've ever been so cripplingly, mindblastingly ill that I couldn't've propped my ravaged body up in a chair and held a pen for ten minutes.

OrificeMax (Old Lunch), Sunday, 4 October 2020 12:25 (five years ago)

also covid’s weird. you feel sort of okay for half the day then it gets you again. that’s why it’s nonsense for trump or his doctors to say “i’m doing better, i think!” or whatever

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 4 October 2020 12:27 (five years ago)

Him being a shithead liar who notoriously stages and makes up shit all the time means no one will take any pronouncements at face value. In this case, seems like the pictures were possibly taken close together, with a slight set and costume change, and possibly some photoshopping, like the addition of a folder. Even if everything were legit, if he was feeling okay you'd think they'd do a slightly better job then this weak Weekend at Bernie's shit.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 4 October 2020 13:25 (five years ago)

Anyway, he's got real Troy McClure washed up actor vibes going on.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 4 October 2020 13:26 (five years ago)

the weird part to me is seeing how narrow is shoulders really are and thus how colossal the shoulder-pads in his jackets must be

I don't understand what is at all weird about those pictures being taken ten minutes apart. Because he's not wearing his jacket in one?

It does feel like ppl are straining to find anomalies in what little info we have—which is esp. strange when you take into consideration that almost everything about this person is already anomalous.

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Sunday, 4 October 2020 13:35 (five years ago)

It was staged to make it look like he’s been working all day as opposed to lying in bed recovering. Look at all the work he is doing, he even goes to a different room for some of his work- here he is signing important documents. Then he’s up and about, and goes to his folder-leafing table and here he is leafing through important folders. He’s been working so hard, he even took off his jacket so he could leaf more effectively through the folders. When the reality is that it took him 10 minutes to sign his name with a sharpie on a blank paper, get up, struggle out of his jacket, and shuffle to another room to sit down again for another photo. Then presumably it’s back to bed for the rest of the day like a normal sick person who doesn’t have to put on a pretend show.

mark s, Sunday, 4 October 2020 14:04 (five years ago)

The lack of both clarification and cries of "fake news" from the White House, each beneficial to Trump if true and/or if he is doing OK, is potentially telling. Keep in mind, iirc even pneumonia was at one point and may still be considered a "mild" symptom. "Mild" in the sense that there is proven treatment and a lower likelihood of hospitalization or death. But even pneumonia is dangerous for someone of his age and size.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 4 October 2020 14:05 (five years ago)

The reflections on the table badly faked. That second pic, on the right side look at the reflected sleeve and binder position.

people want him to die so badly

treeship., Sunday, 4 October 2020 14:13 (five years ago)

he always uses a sharpie to sign his name. and always has. i saw a signed photo of him from the 90s once--in the office of a funeral home director--and it was the same.

treeship., Sunday, 4 October 2020 14:15 (five years ago)

sharpies are the default celeb signature pens these days afaict.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 4 October 2020 14:16 (five years ago)

that's why it's telling that he uses one to sign bills and things. for him, it's always an autograph. he is a show business guy above all.

treeship., Sunday, 4 October 2020 14:18 (five years ago)

last year i got a-rod’s autograph on a baseball amid a sea of kids, all with sharpies, and when i handed him a ballpoint along with my baseball he did a little double-take and gave me a split second look of look of disappointment

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 4 October 2020 14:19 (five years ago)

npr is using the occasion of trump's illness to discuss how different religions conceptualize death. they're also speculating on what atavistic christian concepts trump has buried deep in his psyche that might be coming to the fore right now. pretty funny--i can't imagine they would have done a segment like this about another president.

treeship., Sunday, 4 October 2020 14:19 (five years ago)

Aw man, you let A-Rod down

mark s, Sunday, 4 October 2020 14:25 (five years ago)

It's not about straining to find anomalies, it's about acknowledging that these photos were clearly staged to project a certain narrative which, when combined with the administration's propensity for falsehood, strongly suggests that he's not doing as well as they want us to think. If he WERE doing well, it would be super easy to demonstrate that and they'd be jumping through every possible hoop to do so. Like he'd be filling his idle hours with calls to every Fox News program, just as one example.

OrificeMax (Old Lunch), Sunday, 4 October 2020 14:25 (five years ago)

'
lol why would they fake a reflection

I mean obv the guy is unwell, but getting suspicious about an obvioulsly staged photo is just weird to me...of course he's propped up to make it look like he's working! I mean i know we're all going a little nuts but these recent ilxor truther tendencies are sort of disheartening

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Sunday, 4 October 2020 14:27 (five years ago)

and btw they would be wheeling a sick Obama into place for the same dumb posed shots...this isn't just about domestic politics, it's SOP nat'l security signaling to world leaders that the president isn't incapacitated

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Sunday, 4 October 2020 14:29 (five years ago)

there's nothing to glean one way or another from any photos...we'll know when he's dead

Everyone has already pointed out he waited for the stock markets to close before announcing... anything they’re doing now will surely be factoring a Monday morning bloodbath, no?

seumas milm (gyac), Sunday, 4 October 2020 14:54 (five years ago)

The guy is nothing but reactionary ego. Being hospitalized is basically his worst nightmare come true, because it not only makes him look weak but proves he is literally weak. And all while he's lying there people are either speculating or talking shit, essentially kicking him when he is down, and he has always been about kicking back. The fact that he's not either means he's doing poorly and can't or for the first time in his entire life someone is able to keep him under control.

Seriously, imagine being that turd, lying in bed, flipping through the TV channels and listening to what people are saying and saying nothing in return.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 4 October 2020 14:57 (five years ago)

fwiw I think I saw someone post that there was a brief lockdown at the hospital last night. Hypothesis being they had to move him to another room for another test. Time was after 9pm, you're not taking someone for a test then unless you need to.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 4 October 2020 14:59 (five years ago)

xp gyac yes that too I'm sure
