Was just coming to see if Quino had been mentioned. Both my partner (who is Cuban Spanish) and my Spanish teacher are pretty sad about him dying - Mafalda was a big deal for them growing up as I understand it. I've tried to read it, but still struggle to really get the nuances.

bit late to this but Quino and Mafalda were well loved in my household. We have a big doorstop book - Todo Mafalda - which has every strip. Definitely the only comic strip I've read in its entirety. definitely the pre-eminent and undisputed greatest Latin American comic strip and he stopped making it in 74 or something like that. RIP.

Mafalda was also a big deal in France (and Quebec, to some extent). Quino doesn't appear to have made much of a dent in English-speaking countries – a shame.

We have a pdf of (I think) Toda Mafalda, but the picture quality is pretty terrible and lots of the strips are cut off, so I'm on the lookout for the actual book for my partner too.

From the first pages when Worsthorne describes resisting being given an enema by his mother to the later accounts of interviewing American presidents and other VIPs, the memoir is frank. The author casts an ironical eye on his own private life and on the lives and characters of friends and enemies.

"you'd sting me with an enema?!!"

there are some nice classic old-tory details on his wiki. like how his parents divorced and his mother married the governor of the bank of England and he was brought up by his butler! And he claims he was seduced by George Melly who apparently always denied this tryst.

Not being a Twin Peaks person, I knew him from the show The Path on Hulu, about life in a weirdo cult. He was really good in that, as the guy who takes you into a room and interrogates you if it seems like you might be having second thoughts about cult livin'.

'70s Pop-Reggae Man Johnny Nash

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 6 October 2020 23:16 (three years ago) link

He covered The Wailers' "Stir It Up" so well that Bob & The Wailers re-covered it back in Nash's style which then made Bob Marley an international star and is the version we all know. RIP

Nash signed Marley to his first record and publishing deal in the late '60s. Also: Nash's '68 single "Hold Me Tight" was one of the first--if not the first--Jamaican hits in the US (a year before "Israelites", and two before "Double Barrel").

Vaguely remembered the story about Joe Bob Marley and Johnny Nash got connected but had to look it up again. This guy was a big part of that story: https://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/31/arts/music/danny-sims-producer-of-bob-marley-dies-at-75.html
