It’s not being foreign that seems to be an issue, it’s the “can’t believe you’re all too stupid to see this” attitude that gets people FP’d into oblivion

This is mostly true. I can think of specific instances where posters (whom I otherwise like) told non-US posters who aren't Fred to stay out of the US politics threads.

pomenitul, Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:13 (five years ago)

I can too, I think it’s mostly resorting to ad hominem because a real argument would be uncomfortable/take too long to type

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:15 (five years ago)

That makes it worse, though?

scampo italiano (gyac), Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:16 (five years ago)

I think it's hard for Americans to grok just how much of an indelible mark their political squabbles leave on other countries, and I'm not just talking about obvious examples like Irak.

pomenitul, Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:19 (five years ago)

Most posters should stay out of US politics threads. Including Americans.

Notes on Scampo (tokyo rosemary), Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:22 (five years ago)

A sensible take tbh.

pomenitul, Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:24 (five years ago)

2xp Iraq, rather.

pomenitul, Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:27 (five years ago)

wasn’t defending the practice

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:50 (five years ago)

Far be it from me to suggest that “oh yeah well you’re a foreigner” being the ad hominem to which ppl automatically resort says something about the tenor of the country thread, but

God I'd love a pplains roundup of daily UK news

― remember the lmao (darraghmac), Wednesday, December 20, 2017 5:32 PM

And then he left in to the good night.

pplains, Sunday, 20 September 2020 18:24 (five years ago)

origami condom (Neanderthal), Sunday, 20 September 2020 18:37 (five years ago)

I just want to know who is the new Fred?

sarahell, Sunday, 20 September 2020 18:57 (five years ago)

Probably beamish13

origami condom (Neanderthal), Sunday, 20 September 2020 18:58 (five years ago)

All of us. We are all the new Fred B.

pomenitul, Sunday, 20 September 2020 19:07 (five years ago)

I'm not

sarahell, Sunday, 20 September 2020 19:08 (five years ago)

That's such a Fred thing to say.

origami condom (Neanderthal), Sunday, 20 September 2020 19:14 (five years ago)

Tbh I miss Fred's contributions to the classical music threads.

pomenitul, Sunday, 20 September 2020 19:15 (five years ago)

Someone should draw up a metric for how much rape apologism is acceptable relative to the poster’s other good posts so we don’t have to do this every time.

scampo italiano (gyac), Sunday, 20 September 2020 19:28 (five years ago)

the odd thing about Fred in this whole thing is that he was always working overtime apologizing for some of the shittiest Americans most responsible for policies impacting the rest of the world. He spent a million words admonishing those of us who have to live in this shithole against advocating too strongly for real change.

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Sunday, 20 September 2020 19:28 (five years ago)

At least, after 2x 51 bannings, Fred got the message (so far). There was one weird post on the mubi thread so I don't discount the prick coming back for another round.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 20 September 2020 19:34 (five years ago)

I’m sure he misses you most

otm!

sarahell, Sunday, 20 September 2020 19:42 (five years ago)

oh, i am totally one of those posters that gets annoyed at posters in canada but that is by coincidence. there were just a couple of instances of them posting the same stuff 10 times a day, o'er multiple days. I got annoyed, who cares. We should all be banned.

Yerac, Sunday, 20 September 2020 20:08 (five years ago)

scampo italiano (gyac), Monday, 21 September 2020 00:06 (five years ago)

don't think this thread has made a convincing case for why Fred should have been banned

Dan S, Monday, 21 September 2020 00:37 (five years ago)

sorry we didn't arbitrarily spend all weekend combing two-three years of data in 24 hours time to put together an Exhibit A for you

(ulysses asked for some examples because he was genuinely curious - he didn't ask us to put together a legal brief)

LaRusso Auto (Neanderthal), Monday, 21 September 2020 00:41 (five years ago)

plus, Fred is currently unbanned and has posted recently but has stated he has no desire to come back.

LaRusso Auto (Neanderthal), Monday, 21 September 2020 00:41 (five years ago)

yeah I don’t think that is the intended function of this thread.

Maybe the 102 fp’s can do the convincing.

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Monday, 21 September 2020 00:43 (five years ago)

whatever, he posted in earnest whether or not you liked his posts

Dan S, Monday, 21 September 2020 00:50 (five years ago)

Not sure what earnestness has to with it, there’s no shortage of deeply sincere troublemakers in the world.

Anyway it’s nothing to litigate, it happened.

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Monday, 21 September 2020 00:57 (five years ago)

earnestness matters a lot to me, it's why I like ilx

Dan S, Monday, 21 September 2020 01:05 (five years ago)

are you Oscar Wilde

LaRusso Auto (Neanderthal), Monday, 21 September 2020 01:06 (five years ago)

i mean it is kinda rude, though, it's like having a friend crying and telling you this person is constantly making your life hell, and responding "really? name 15 exact things she's done and I need it in the next five minutes, or else I will not believe you"

LaRusso Auto (Neanderthal), Monday, 21 September 2020 01:06 (five years ago)

:) I did see the 1952 film recently

Dan S, Monday, 21 September 2020 01:09 (five years ago)

fred's bans were both ages ago. if you really want to understand why, the only way is to go back and read all the posts about them from that time. nobody else is going to put together a history of it that's much use. certainly the time to litigate it would have been back then --- everything looks better in vague hindsight without all the posts in front of us.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 21 September 2020 01:57 (five years ago)

Part of the way genocide jokes work is a) it matters who is making them (e.g. few people think it's unacceptable for Jews to joke about the Shoah); b) insofar as genocide is the epitome of human nihilism, it screams 'desacralization', i.e. nothing can ever be sacred again after such an event, including genocide, so we might as well make fun of it for cathartic purposes. The second condition was definitely met here as far as I'm concerned, it's the first that is still up for debate, at least in the context of ILX.

sock solipsist (pomenitul), Friday, 25 September 2020 13:48 (five years ago)

I have no idea what this in relation to

seumas milm (gyac), Friday, 25 September 2020 13:54 (five years ago)

Quick derail re: yr post, pom: I just don't agree with the premise that *anyone* can make fun of genocide after its event as elucidated in yr point b, and joking about indigenous genocide if yr a settler is ghastly, afaic. i don't want to assume unperson's ethnic background, but I don't think my stance is one of leftist sanctimony run amok— it's one of not wanting to poke at wounds that are still festering due to the hegemonic political ideology in the US.

healthy cocaine off perfect butts (the table is the table), Friday, 25 September 2020 13:54 (five years ago)

but if that makes me a "PC fag" or a humorless twat or whatever, then so be it.

i'd rather be a humorless fag than taking the piss about genocide. call me crazy.

healthy cocaine off perfect butts (the table is the table), Friday, 25 September 2020 13:57 (five years ago)

Oh nm I’ve caught up, yeah, fuck anyone from the outgroup joking about genocide, like fuck me, how hard is it to not trivialise something that still has impact up to and including the present day?

seumas milm (gyac), Friday, 25 September 2020 13:58 (five years ago)

xp tbh I think if it’s your own group then gallows humour is not only fine but acceptable, I couldn’t tell you the number of jokes about the famine I’ve made that I would consider deeply awful for idk a British person to make.

seumas milm (gyac), Friday, 25 September 2020 13:59 (five years ago)

That's fair, table, I'm not trying to exculpate unperson here. He knows exactly what he's doing and the aim was to get a rise out of you, presumably because he finds little value in radical idealism.

3xp
