I am stuck in the US at least one more year because I'm moving into a two bedroom with my folks to help care for my father.

After that, idk if i wanna be here even if Biden is President. I can afford to leave. Rn nowhere i wanna go would be likely to let me in lol

we seriously thought about Canada 4 years ago and were considering if Trump wins re-election (and maybe we still will) but since I live inn California I honestly think it's better to just never move from here. Unless CA starts shifting hard right, which is unlikely in my lifetime.

akm, Saturday, 19 September 2020 15:34 (five years ago)

I would have a hard time leaving my friends. I have a ton of 15 year friendships here that I'd have a hard time moving to virtual only.

origami condom (Neanderthal), Saturday, 19 September 2020 15:37 (five years ago)

I think unless you are in a demographic that stands to suffer greatly under a new trump administration (ie: you are trans, etc) and can afford to leave, it behooves you to stay in the US and do whatever necessary to make life workable for those who will suffer but cannot leave.

I did immigrate to Canada 6 years ago (not for political reasons lol, immigrating is very difficult) and can report it is not problem-free

This right response to this is to DC and PR statehood.

Stephen Harper made it unbelievably difficult to immigrate to Canada. I hope you’re conversationally fluent in English AND French; that’s the way to get your Express Entry points up

beamish13, Saturday, 19 September 2020 17:10 (five years ago)

And fwiw biden is on the record as being opposed to court packing so if you’re hoping for that you’re going to be disappointed.

I don’t think he’s on the record re PR but he supports DC statehood.

easy to flip-flop if he’s in office. ya don’t have to run on court packing, you just have to do it

also he was against court packing with RBG still alive and on the court, this is a different situation

Well like I say court packing is a bad idea unless you add a couple of states too. So I hope he doesn’t change his mind tbh until that’s done.

the thing is, you DO have to run on court packing! that's the thing about making it clear, this very day, that if the GOP installs yet another corrupt SC pick, the democrats WILL add seats to the SC in 2021. run on it, as a campaign promise. make it clear to everyone that it's the plan. then win the election, and do it, with something that trump (and bush 2000) never had: a "mandate" from the american people to do something.

flip-flopping on it in the new term will not work.

WATCH THIS SPACE: @MULawPoll finds majority of Democrats (61%) favor or strongly favor adding more justices to Supreme Court. 34% of Republicans favored or strongly favored adding more justices. @JoeBiden is expected to face pressure from liberal groups to commit to doing so. pic.twitter.com/F1kcO5Fg4S

I want a better space to watch - that poll question is ambiguous. Do I favor packing the court? Right now, if trump does it? Or in the hypothetical future where Biden wins? Or just as a general stance?

Karl Malone, Saturday, 19 September 2020 17:43 (five years ago)

That might be why 34% of republicans expressed support for adding more justices, which would almost certainly be a bad thing for them (they already have a majority)

Nah they just saw the word "packing" and instinctually threw their support at it

origami condom (Neanderthal), Saturday, 19 September 2020 17:46 (five years ago)

Like the classic Obamacare poll: do I support it? You mean, do I support it as opposed to an actual universal coverage program? No of course not. Do I support it compared to the status quo? Of course I do. So, uhh

Pack the senate. It doesn’t have an obvious escalatory response and statehood for dc is extremely popular.

FDR once met with a group of activists who sought his support for bold legislation. He listened to their arguments for some time and then said, "You've convinced me. Now go out and make me do it."

Pack the senate. It doesn’t have an obvious escalatory response and statehood for dc is extremely popular.

do both imo. senate packing won't help the SC situation (not until thomas or alito dies), and republicans will (continue to) disproportionately escalate no matter what democrats do.

Karl Malone, Saturday, 19 September 2020 18:12 (five years ago)

since i can predict the future, i'll go ahead and note that the democrats will NOT make it clear, now, that they will respond by packing the courts if/when the GOP installs a new justice. that would not be in character for them. as a result, we will be living with a strong republican majority on the SC for the foreseeable future. (i think)

the RBG news and the shameless push to nominate new SC justice has punctured the fragile baloon of hope I'd concocted for November. Is this gloom justified? I honestly feel like I've been the sole voice of "No, hang on, it's going to be okay, honest" among my cohort. It's ebbing away today.

I’m not saying it’s perfect but court packing is extremely unpopular based on all the polling I’ve seen (not without reason tbh).

Dc statehood is more popular with lamestream norms democrats, less unpopular than court packing, and more effective in the long run for allowing democrats to govern that doing something feeble like adding two seats to the court (which gets us back to where we were yesterday, assuming trumps nomination goes through).

Court packing might become more popular depending on how hard Biden and the Senate Dems push.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 19 September 2020 18:21 (five years ago)

First of all, stop using the phrase "court packing" because it sounds like you're stuffing people into a phone booth or something. It has negative connotations. Start using the phrase "growing the Supreme Court" or something similar.

Statehood is more popular than whatever you call growing the judicial branch, it has a less obvious escalatory response, it solves a ton of governance problems for democrats by beginning to fix the senate, and gives representation to 4m Americans.

It doesn’t have to be either/or, but I have no idea why court packing should be the first move here.

xps caek

i think court packing embellishing is the first move here because it's in response to something (RBG's replacement being hypocritically and unfairly selected by republicans). it would make sense to suddenly add it to the democratic campaign and run on it.

like i mentioned upthread, i think in order for it to actually work, i think biden actually DOES have to run on it (he won't).

i think that's true with statehood issues, too. it needs to be on the campaign platform - make it an election issue, and then demonstrate that a majority of the country wants leadership that will do it. then, in the first legislative sessions of a new congress, implement it. (they're definitely not adding this at a campaign promise at this point)

fwiw i also think that's true of many things that absolutely need to happen, ie election reform

Karl Malone, Saturday, 19 September 2020 19:49 (five years ago)

it’s not “unfair” for the president to nominate a supreme court justice and the senate to confirm them iirc

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 19 September 2020 19:50 (five years ago)

i mean........... sorry but that’s how it works??!

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 19 September 2020 19:52 (five years ago)

do you think what happened to merrick garland was unfair?

Karl Malone, Saturday, 19 September 2020 19:58 (five years ago)

i mean, the predictable course of that line of reasoning, i think, is that yes, what happened to garland was unfair. two rights do not make a wrong, why do the unfair thing to trump now? and then we can get into whether there is in fact a clear calendar date which delineates between a "fair" and "unfair", when a SC judge dies during an election year. if they die before july they should be replaced, afterward not? or maybe it's any time up to inauguration day, since at any time, technically the administration has the authority to nominate someone, and congress has the authority to vote on it (or not, in the case of garland).

so, bad question on my part, because the main point is that republicans are not playing the same game. or rather, democrats are still busy trying to follow the rules while republicans are busy rewriting them.
