Anyway, I heard that Trump eats babies, so there.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 18 September 2020 19:45 (five years ago)

tbh the only just outcome would be for him to spend the rest of his living days defending against a literal mountain of criminal and civil charges

if the president of the united states says the governor of virginia is executing babies, which is definitely not a nod in the direction of qanon, i guess we have to believe him. he's earned our trust

Karl Malone, Friday, 18 September 2020 19:59 (five years ago)

sick of these Dem politicians pandering to the baby-executing voting bloc

Trump's gonna keep up with the Q-Bait, even though he already has their votes locked down.

He knows nothing about them, but has heard they like him. We have his word on this.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/18/us/politics/trump-drug-prices.html

lol i guess?

WASHINGTON — After months of heated accusations and painstaking negotiations, the White House and the pharmaceutical industry neared agreement late last month on a plan to make good on President Trump’s longstanding promise to lower drug prices.

The drug companies would spend $150 billion to address out-of-pocket consumer costs and would even pick up the bulk of the co-payments that older Americans shoulder in Medicare’s prescription drug program.

Then the agreement collapsed. The breaking point, according to four people familiar with the discussions: Mark Meadows, Mr. Trump’s chief of staff, insisted the drug makers pay for $100 cash cards that would be mailed to seniors before November — “Trump Cards,” some in the industry called them.

if he wins a second term this administration will have literally zero incentive to do anything beneficial for the American people

Damn that baby comment. The Venn diagram overlap or lunatic rambling on the street corner and literal president of US is nuts.

Evan, Friday, 18 September 2020 21:16 (five years ago)

1. So I spoke to the head of the Federal Election Commission today.

He told me the separation of church and state is a "fallacy," that Trump's 2017 EO allows faith leaders to endorse candidates, and that the 2020 election is a "spiritual war." https://t.co/erL9zANrIj

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 18 September 2020 21:27 (five years ago)

Just constantly aghast at the pettiness of Trump’s corruption. Dick Cheney would have promised the drug companies money on the back end to get those cards, then made them redeemable only at whichever pharmacy chain was owned by one of his friends.

A data point.

President Trump's approval rating stands at 24% approve, 73% (!) disapprove among white women with a college degree via new NPR/PBS/Marist poll.

velcro-magnon (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 18 September 2020 22:46 (five years ago)

I think more Biden voters will early vote more than the polling indicates or pundits think rather than vote by mail-- they've heard enough post office nightmare stories and they want him out.

That would be my guess too--that those long lines being reported today are filled with Biden voters. Probably not a majority, but a good number ( at least 30%?).

Crap. But I don't think there's any way Trump can get a nominee to a vote in 7 weeks.

(show hidden tics) (WmC), Friday, 18 September 2020 23:38 (five years ago)

It's not so much that situation as the interregnum.

No but it will be a grimly amusing spectacle to watch McConnell decide that actually this IS something we do in an election year

No but it will be a grimly amusing spectacle to watch McConnell decide that actually this IS something we do in an election year

May 29, 2019:

Speaking at a Paducah Chamber of Commerce luncheon in Kentucky, McConnell was asked by an attendee, "Should a Supreme Court justice die next year, what will your position be on filling that spot?"

The leader took a long sip of what appeared to be iced tea before announcing with a smile, "Oh, we'd fill it," triggering loud laughter from the audience.

Honestly I can't see anything happening before the election just due to the GOP Senate election math at play. The interregnum, hm. Also things looked rather different in general in May 2019 than now.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 18 September 2020 23:54 (five years ago)

the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Friday, 18 September 2020 23:55 (five years ago)

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 18 September 2020 23:57 (five years ago)

Supposedly, according to CNN, McConnell has his rationalization ready to go: in 2016 the executive/senate was split, in 2020 they're not. That's his story.

(xpost) I think it means that he will try to push someone through. It'd take 3 Republican senators to block him (I think, or would that leave a tie?).

Alaska's @lisamurkowski said today she won't confirm a new SCOTUS justice until after the inauguration day. Fair is fair, she says. My colleague @kcgrove will have a story shortly.

I wonder if Collins would announce the same to try to save her seat.

(show hidden tics) (WmC), Saturday, 19 September 2020 00:02 (five years ago)

About to post that tweet. Can't imagine Collins acting different in general. Throw in Gardner and McSally alone and there's a lot of 'uhh' about now as much as anything else.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 19 September 2020 00:03 (five years ago)

i mean, it would be profoundly, flagrantly, outrageously, baroquely hypocrtical for the republican senators to confirm someone before the election.

i know they are going to do it, but it will be these things.

treeship., Saturday, 19 September 2020 00:03 (five years ago)

Who knows, maybe even Honorable Republican Mitt Romney will also say 'nah.'

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 19 September 2020 00:03 (five years ago)

Not if he's the nominee
