Pretty ridiculous bill. and nowhere does it say that they have to prove that the dog is a pit bull. (as if it matters.)

One of the few small dogs that I endorse wholeheartedly. Adorable and spunky! Go teacup!
Other acceptable small dogs:
Shiba Inu and...
You have selected: Jack Russell Terrier

Okay, I'll capitulate cash flow, bear in mind that it's for an untrained puppy from scratch.
We probably spent about five to seven hundred dollars on start up dog expenses: license, shots, vet physical, crate, first toys, nature's miracle (don't miss this stuff), cash to replace stuff she destroyed (she ate two wii games and two pairs of shoes), first food, first bowls, first leash, nail clippers, doggie shampoo, first collar, first harness, doggie bed, bones, treats, etc. etc. etc.
If you don't work at home or have a back yard and it's a rambunctious dog that you don't want to/can't leave in the house, you're gonna have to do doggie day care or dog walking services. We pay thirty bucks a day, five days a week for that in Jersey; they do pick up and drop off and let her play with other dogs all day and feed her. It's a nice facility. It wouldn't be less than 20 to get her walked twice daily; probably more.
We set aside (my girl and I collectively) about 200 a month. 100 goes to food, treats, new toys, new stuff that she chews up. The other hundred goes into the medical emergency fund; we've already agreed that we can't go into debt for the dog if she gets badly ill, so this is to supplement the "up-to-a-thousand-but-that's-it" limit we put on her when we got her. We probably spend a couple extra bucks beyond that on impulse treats.
Your milage may vary (we definitely spoil her), but for a city dweller I find that owning a dog is roughly as expensive as owning a car.

Dog gets cover image! Fuck off, swimsuit girls.
I should start reading aloud to my dog.
The late John Jacob Astor, a personage littlegiven to poetic enthusiasm, had no hesitation in pronouncing my firstgrand point to be prudence; my next, method. I do not speak it invanity, but simply record the fact, that I was not unemployed in myprofession by the late John Jacob Astor; a name which, I admit, I loveto repeat, for it hath a rounded and orbicular sound to it, and ringslike unto bullion. I will freely add, that I was not insensible to thelate John Jacob Astor's good opinion.
He looked in the other direction, but he always does that. Otherwise, he sat quite still and occasionally wagged his tail. Good boy.

Plea for help, guys, from one of my colleagues:
Last night my roommate found a dog shivering on the street. He took her in and gave her some food and a bath and then she slept for about 4-5 hours. Clearly she was exhausted and hungry. When she woke up she was a pleasure to be with. Tail wagging, never barked, and responded to simple commands. We have some neighbors who work with animals, one is a former vet tech, another a dog trainer. They both examined her and she has a few scrapes but otherwise in good shape. While its clear she is housebroken, it seems her former owners did not take very good care. We estimate she is about 2 years old. Because we have four cats, we cannot entertain the idea of keeping a dog. If you know anyone who can take in this sweet animal please let me know. We want to avoid bringing her to a shelter, please send this along to anyone you think can help. Thanks.

OMG. I could never take another pit, but so sweet. Laurel, are you NYC? If so, forward me more info and I'll circulate.
My baby had the flu for three weeks and then tore her acl. she's been cooped up in the house for five weeks and I came home last night to a stir-crazed pile of shredded magazines and video game boxes. We gotta get her back to regular playtime.
Nick: Most US shelters are packed full with pits already and even at a no-kill shelter, they're unlikely to be placed.

when I lived in tennessee, the bastards who ran dogfighting rings would troll shelters for pit bulls, and since the shelters knew this, they would automatically put down pit bulls.

― How can there be male ladybugs? (Laurel), Wednesday, 4 February 2009 20:06 (seventeen years ago)
Pits tend to get husky like that when they're low slung, which she seems to be, but yeah: she needs two squares for a few months.
― angry pro-microwave vegetarian (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 4 February 2009 20:08 (seventeen years ago)
She looks in pretty good shape in that pic. Pits are always pretty buff looking unless their owner overfeeds 'em and then they can get a bit rolly-polly.
― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 20:11 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, those muscles look like they'd wrench your shoulder pretty good if she saw a squirrel while you had her on leash.
