Mad Monster Party co-written by Harvey Kurtzman to nicely close the circle.

BTW, excellent spot on the Kurtzman involvement in that Fire Sale poster, stevie.

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 15 September 2020 22:59 (five years ago)

Davis too apparently

"mad monster party" apparently trying to pre-empt MAD magazine's spoof by using their exact typeface/bolding.

Mad Monster Party? wasn't official MAD but had ties - Harvey Kurtzman co-wrote the script and Jack Davis did character design.

Thanks for the Friedman link, visiting - the last few TV Guide pieces look very much like the "WEHK"-signed mid-'80s stuff that stevie was remembering

Thanks Ward!

Just a few slices of apple, Servant. Thank you. How delicious. (stevie), Wednesday, 16 September 2020 07:15 (five years ago)

Though I think it was just Will Elder...

This is what Friedman says about it on that link visiting posted:

This time In collaboration with Kurtzman, Elder's second film poster, from 1977

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 16 September 2020 08:00 (five years ago)

Ah right, was only looking at the lovely pix on that link, and hadn't spotted any trademark WEHK signature.

I guess Kurtzman did the initial layout design and then WE painted it - predates the WEHK signed stuff by a few years, maybe they only used that for Mad?

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 16 September 2020 08:30 (five years ago)

Nuts! may have also had some WEHK-signed stuff, the covers had the same sort of look iirc

erratic wolf angular guitarist (sic), Wednesday, 16 September 2020 09:06 (five years ago)

Rosalind Russell in that spy picture ?? Literally 30 years after her peak!

the pinefox, Wednesday, 16 September 2020 09:27 (five years ago)

They way they drew women on movie posters from like 1965 to 1989 is like America's hentai

I'm repeatedly baffled that all of these movies exist. Part of me still thinks they are being spit out by an AI

we're living in a simulation, so...

Always think about the middle-aged Silent Generation couple dressing up and getting a sitter so they can go see the latest Peter Sellers movie.

Fastner & Larson art btw, definitely look like Kurtzman gags though

Those Peter Sellers movies, ones like "Mrs. Pollifax-Spy" or "The Secret of My Success", may have been the high-brow "low-brow" movies of their day. While the Boomer teens saw the latest Elvis movie, I picture the 40something parents putting on coat and tie, nice earrings and hat, and going out for a bit of fun to see an "adult" movie before heading over to Sam's Diner on the way home for a cup of coffee.

pplains, Wednesday, 16 September 2020 20:25 (five years ago)

boomer teens were going to elvis movies in the early 70s?

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 17 September 2020 01:48 (five years ago)

I was thinking these were from 1965-68 or so!

Again, this is just what's happening in my head, maybe not IRL.

pplains, Thursday, 17 September 2020 02:21 (five years ago)

tbh i didn't realize until just now looking it up that Elvis was still starring in narrative features up until '69, so i think generally your theory could totally work for a lot of the dorky MOR-looking 60s comedies itt!

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 17 September 2020 11:44 (five years ago)

I don't think in 1969 anybody was going to see Charro! or Change of Habit.

Clearly the best hope for the movie industry to recover is to ban photographic or photoshopped posters

Kidnapped one is gorgeous.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 25 September 2020 16:12 (five years ago)

imdb trivia for t-shirt zone:

The movie had an alternate title. It was sold under the title of "Sexy Lady" in Argentina and other countries of Latin America.

Same artist as Kidnapped.

Andy's undisplayable image is achronologically fulfilling this prediction: post movie posters done in a busy/claustrophobic caricature style from the 70s and 80s

here's one that might show up, though the linked version in that post is much better:

ebay- and twitter-hosted image embeds never show on ILX for me, probably a quirk of the stylesheet

erratic wolf angular guitarist (sic), Friday, 25 September 2020 19:58 (five years ago)

Yeah, I can see both versions.. I actually prefer the full-color version..
