gotta recycle my dad's immortal retort, from the time when we were on a touristy mountain peak in colorado, and some random people in a car told him to get off of the moss he was standing on and back on the trail (there were signs everywhere saying to stay on the trail):

"...those are exactly the kind of people who are going to drive off and get an ABORTION!"

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 15 September 2020 15:39 (five years ago)

it was like, the immediate, gut, inner-id-level response

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 15 September 2020 15:39 (five years ago)

I put up a It’s wine o’clock sign

they put the abortion clinic on the top of the mountain to make it easier for the ecofascists to yell at american patriots on the road to perdition. and i heard that carter endorsed extra funding for the road because he's a democrat

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 15 September 2020 15:56 (five years ago)

haha, sorry thread. for today and most of recent days as well.

september 15, 2020: not anywhere close to the month or day or year i will choose to return to, if i ever get a chance in some cryogenic/time travel lab

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 15 September 2020 15:57 (five years ago)

Lucky to live in one of the biggest left bastions in my metro area, so no Trump signs here yet... to give you an idea of the environment, the shithead racists known as the Proud Boys are holding a rally at the park where the farmers market takes place each Saturday, at the same time as the farmers market. The yapping swastikas are calling it 'The Belly of the Beast' rally.

healthy cocaine off perfect butts (the table is the table), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 17:07 (five years ago)

'The Belly of the Beast' is stolen straight from the 1960s radical left.

here I think it's about equal between Trump & Biden (which is bad news for Trump, I think), but there is one big difference, the Trump signs I see are often HUGE and come with a giant flag, idk how much those cost but it's gotta be $100+ (the majority of which has got to be going directly into his pockets). I think that's just the difference in mindset, I wouldn't be caught dead displaying a giant obnoxious sign like that, even for the few politicians I really like. the only reason I can imagine doing it is if it was someone like AOC, just to annoy the shit out of my idiot neighbors, but even then I'd never actually buy one. so I kinda know exactly what all the giant Trump signs are about.

frogbs, Tuesday, 15 September 2020 17:13 (five years ago)

Same. What I see here is a hysterical overdressing. TWO flags! Bunting! Black and blue flags on both sides of SUVs.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 17:15 (five years ago)

There's a neighbor around here who has had nary a Trump sign in sight on his yard - there are not really any Trump signs around here - but he does still have a Ben Carson bumper sticker on his car. I kind of want to know his deal. I mean, I don't. But still.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 15 September 2020 17:19 (five years ago)

There was a few houses along the main drag in Bay City that had giant, clearly homemade Biden/Harris sings that were both clearly trying to compete with their neighbors that had those gigantic ass Trump signs and flags that frogbs notes.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 17:22 (five years ago)

friend of mine had Ben Carson visit his school as a guest speaker when he was a star surgeon, he was very impressed, then when he emerged decades later as a political figure he could not believe what a fucking idiot he was

A student told me she'd been taught to revere Ben Carson. Then 2015 happened.

It also differentiates Trumpers from supporters of past Republican Presidents & candidates. Ever see a pickup truck flying a Dubya flag??

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 17:39 (five years ago)

Yes. I saw a lot of full “W THE PRESIDENT” black flags back then.

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 17:42 (five years ago)

lights on the signs burning all the time to maintain the coal industry or whatever? Are these the same people who compete over how large their Xmas displays are and how many flashing lights they have?
Must cost a fortune to keep taht running for the month or whatever Xmas lasts.
Is it a direct show of ostentation so how much wealth you can afford to waste.

Oh well 50 more days and we'll find out how damned we are.

Stevolende, Tuesday, 15 September 2020 17:44 (five years ago)

XP Man, I had a neighbor who stuck with their W sticker well into the second Obama term.

I'm in a very blue neighborhood in a fairly blue city in a very red county, so I can count on Trump-signs-per-block increasing the farther I drive in almost any direction. Only a few in my own 'hood, and none on my block.

what's funny/maddening to me are these people who put up signs when they live like deep inside subdivisions or on cul de sacs and shit. my best friend was telling me the other day that one of his mom's new neighbor's first acts was to put up a big-ass Trump sign in their leafy, extremely lightly trafficked subdivision. like, how many people are even gonna see that fucking sign? at that point you really are just doing it to troll your own goddamn neighbors.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 18:51 (five years ago)

^^^ story of my life! I walk past a cul-de-sac I call MAGA Alley, and my first thought was, "They must know Biden voters on this block."

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 18:52 (five years ago)

the people in my neighborhood who put up "Love Lives Here" signs when everyone else was putting out "Hate Has No Home Here" signs

I have no idea what this signifies

I drove by a house that had probably a dozen Trump signs including “Where’s Joe? Where Hunter?” The neighbor across the street had a sign for the Democratic candidate for village trustee so there is probably some element of trolling involved.

Notes on Scampo (tokyo rosemary), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 18:57 (five years ago)

There are also lots of We Stand Against Racism And We Back the Blue signs.

In DC basically nobody has signs up except the ones left over from the Dem primary. And the vast majority of those are for city council contests.

Re: Caputo, this is a thing I learned today:

Caputo took a contract in 2000 working for the Russian conglomerate Gazprom Media to improve Vladimir Putin’s image in the United States. He later told the Buffalo News that he was “not proud of the work,” adding, “at the time, Putin wasn’t such a bad guy.”

Just a youthful indiscretion, nothing to see, Putin's PR guy going on to direct Trump's COVID communications effort. Cool, cool.
