Louis DeJoy’s prolific campaign fundraising, which helped position him as a top Republican power broker in North Carolina and ultimately as head of the U.S. Postal Service, was bolstered for more than a decade by a practice that left many employees feeling pressured to make political contributions to GOP candidates — money DeJoy later reimbursed through bonuses, former employees say.

Anyway, as hilarious as this is, maybe not great for the country that another figure with a crucial election security role will almost definitely go to prison if Trump doesn't win!

“Trump held a meeting at Trump Tower with prominent evangelical leaders, where they laid their hands on him in prayer. Afterward, Trump allegedly said: ‘Can you believe that bullshit? Can you believe people believe that bullshit?’”

Cohen also depicts Trump as being crude toward women, including inadvertently commenting on Cohen’s then-15-year-old daughter as she finished up a tennis lesson: “Look at that piece of a--,” Trump said, according to Cohen. “I would love some of that.”

Afterward, Trump allegedly said: ‘Can you believe that bullshit? Can you believe people believe that bullshit?’”

I've always thought this was literally his one saving grace--not the hypocrisy or ridicule of others, of course, but his lack of all religious conviction. (Not a principled atheism or anything, just a 100% attachment to himself and to things.) And why I believe Palin would have been even more dangerous as president if it ever came down to a Cuban Missile-type crisis. (Something like COVID, who knows?)

clemenza, Sunday, 6 September 2020 17:46 (five years ago)

"Saving grace" might be the wrong phrase--not implying that supersedes Everything Else.

clemenza, Sunday, 6 September 2020 17:48 (five years ago)

Speaking of Greenwald...

Neanderthal, Sunday, 6 September 2020 18:01 (five years ago)

But if one looks at what they actually did, at what this “confirmation” consists of, it is the opposite of what that word would mean, or should mean

What is increasingly wrong with this person’s brain? The opposite of “comfirm” would be “disprove” or “refute.”

Obviously what these add’l media are “comfirming” is the existence of the original sources—that they were not made up out if whole cloth. They are “confirming” the original reporting.

syphilitic wolf prose errata (Hadrian VIII), Sunday, 6 September 2020 18:18 (five years ago)

Real psycho stuff. Too optimistic to think he’s going to end up running to the right of Texas in 2024?

1/2 This needs to happen:

Did I read this week that Barr is presently doing just this—looking at RICO to prosecute what they think is “Antifa”?

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Sunday, 6 September 2020 22:25 (five years ago)

Even those whose charges have been dropped in PDX are being slapped with federal charges, yes.

I mean, I don't think all, but many.

healthy cocaine off perfect butts (the table is the table), Sunday, 6 September 2020 22:29 (five years ago)

But under RICO? If so it’s hilarious that they basically imagined Antifa as an organization in the first place and now are going to additionally invent some structure around it to prosecute...

Neanderthal, Sunday, 6 September 2020 22:51 (five years ago)

I saw a comment somewhere, probably in regards to those tweets, about how Cruz has realized he's basically peaked politically, so he's decided to burn out his remaining career playing to the bigoted uncle demographic.

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 6 September 2020 22:51 (five years ago)

It seems like they might be trying to build a case for conspiracy at a later juncture, but no one who has been charged just yet is facing such charges, at least in PDX.

These people actively conspire together on social media to utilize their First Amendment rights. They trade tips about how to neutralize the force that is used against them while pursuing those rights. They also corruptly organize medical assistance for people who have been tear-gassed or maced by law enforcement. Often, when told to disperse from areas where their exits are blocked by police cordons, they either attempt to break directly through police lines or else fail to comply altogether. This lawlessness and criminal depravity must end!

Neanderthal, Sunday, 6 September 2020 22:57 (five years ago)

that will be enormously fucked up and p much necessitate combing Twitter and FB for ppl who posted “yeah, let’s go March”

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Sunday, 6 September 2020 22:59 (five years ago)

Speaking of people who've peaked politically, there's a Times article talking about the Trump campaign that quotes Newt Gingrich for some reason...and Gingrich says in order to win re-election, Trump must "turn Biden into McGovern."

Why do political journalists act like anyone other than political journalists gives a fuck what Newt Gingrich has to say about anything? I understand why Gingrich thinks a reference to George McGovern is relevant — because he's old and his brain is broken. But are reporters' brains so broken that they, too, think talking about George McGovern matters to anyone in 2020?

but also fuck you (unperson), Sunday, 6 September 2020 23:00 (five years ago)

Not to defend Newt Gingrich, but I just see that as shorthand--like swiftboating, or Willie Horton, or whatever--for common ploys still used today. I don't think McGovern himself matters.

clemenza, Monday, 7 September 2020 01:15 (five years ago)

in order to win re-election, Trump must "turn Biden into McGovern."

Gingrich is an idiot, but I hope he's 100% correct about this. Most voters were only vaguely familiar with McGovern prior to 1972. He was a senator from South Dakota for crying out loud and had a weak national presence. McGovern ran against Dick Fucking Nixon, who was Machiavelli compared to Trump. McGovern blew his convention bump via the Eagleton fiasco and was struggling to unify a totally fractured party on the biggest issue of the day, Vietnam.

The chances that Trump could convince US voters that Biden is dangerously far to the left of center are more or less impossible. Biden is not really vulnerable to being totally redefined as a flaming socialist.

the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Monday, 7 September 2020 04:24 (five years ago)

oof that Cruz tweet. curiosity got the better of me and I clicked on the TOWN HALL (do not recommend) piece and boy it is some psycho shit. every once in a while it’s interesting (/horrifying) to peek in the kitchen where the harder edge of the mainstream (ffs) right is cooking their dope

Biden is not really vulnerable to being totally redefined as a flaming socialist.

You would think, but it won’t be for lack of trying. I’m seeing a number of ads with Joe and AOC’s faces side by side.

Orson Well Yeah (Dan Peterson), Monday, 7 September 2020 14:41 (five years ago)

AOC isn't a flaming socialist either, tbf.

healthy cocaine off perfect butts (the table is the table), Monday, 7 September 2020 14:52 (five years ago)

No argument from me there.

Orson Well Yeah (Dan Peterson), Monday, 7 September 2020 14:55 (five years ago)

Biden 51%, Trump 43% in Wisconsin - according to Rasmussen.

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 7 September 2020 15:00 (five years ago)

They will try--they do every election, no matter who the Democrats run. But that was--for better or worse--the trade-off a lot of primary voters made: a lukewarm vote for Biden because it would be extremely difficult to turn him into McGovern.
