Kang Kek Iew aka Duch, Khmer Rouge torturer, murderer and war criminal who later converted to Christianity in hopes of atoning for his 'sins'. He was 77.

Legendary Baseball Pitcher Tom Seaver

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 3 September 2020 01:00 (five years ago)

Been out all day, just heard this. I became a fan during the 1970 WS, so I missed his glory season by a year. At least until Clemens/Maddux/Martinez/Johnson (and more recently Kershaw), the greatest pitcher of my lifetime as a fan.

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Thursday, 3 September 2020 13:48 (five years ago)

"Bullshit jobs", as a concept, has been very very handy to me in terms of broaching labor politics and all kinds of other subjects with co-workers and acquaintances whose political orientation (or much more often lack thereof) I have no knowledge of. So thanks for that DG

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Thursday, 3 September 2020 13:56 (five years ago)

oh no, RIP :(

(appreciating any book/article recs as I'd been meaning to read more of his work)

scampus unrest (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 3 September 2020 13:59 (five years ago)

I always appreciated that, despite his academic background, his books (the two I've read anyway, Debt and BS Jobs) are low on jargon and accessible without being (or feeling) dumbed down. That's a rare gift.

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Thursday, 3 September 2020 22:55 (five years ago)

I often saw him pottering about the SCR at LSE, reading the Telegraph in what I can only assume was a "know your enemy" kind of way. He will be sorely missed.

Neil S, Friday, 4 September 2020 10:04 (five years ago)

he was posting on twitter wednesday lunchtime, then he's gone. A sudden unexpected death like that is always a bit of a shock.

pomenitul, Saturday, 5 September 2020 16:51 (five years ago)

Looks like it's been confirmed.

Sadly, the news of the great bassist Gary Peacock's death has been confirmed by his family, so I've expanded and reposted my Blue Moment tribute: https://t.co/KhlaElsOCA

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/31/obituaries/aldir-blanc-mendes-dead.htm

Aldir Blanc samba lyricist RIP from Covid at 73 . with a guitarist named João Bosco who wrote the music, he wrote the lyrics for “O Bêbado e a Equilibrista” (“The Drunk and the Tightrope Walker”), written in 1978, was ostensibly about a Charlie Chaplin film."....subtly criticized Brazil’s government and called for the peaceful return of political refugees. Sung soulfully by Elis Regina, it became a kind of amnesty anthem and a popular call for the reinstitution of democracy.....his songs reflecting the hardscrabble lives and language of the working-class neighborhoods where he lived, according to Hugo Sukman, the author of “Parallel Stories — 50 Years of Brazilian Music” (2011).

aw shit. kool & the gang were great.

Just a few slices of apple, Servant. Thank you. How delicious. (stevie), Thursday, 10 September 2020 12:43 (five years ago)

There was some internet thing going around asking "most underrated act?" and Jason Isbell responded pretty quickly with "Los Lobos" (which is fair, imo). I'd not really thought about it that much, but when I did I kinda thought "Kool & the Gang."

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 10 September 2020 13:37 (five years ago)

The very best.

nashwan, Thursday, 10 September 2020 13:39 (five years ago)

I had some experiences with the Bells. They lived in my town and Kool's sone went to my high school, first guy I knew with a beeper. After I got into music production I learned there was a famous recording studio hidden away directly across the street from my house more or less so I went by and got myself a summer internship. It was called the House Of Music. Bat Out of Hell, Synergy, Patti Smith, Dr. Buzzard and many other big names recorded there. It was attached to/associated with another studio run by the Bells who's name I can't remember but I used to make them coffee and stuff.
