I loved learning that Phylicia Rashad (and an unwitting Denzel Washington) were early mentors.

This death is hitting much harder than usual, given all of the attendant circumstances. And given how, IME, kids are so into Black Panther in particular.

Don't be such an idot. (Old Lunch), Saturday, 29 August 2020 14:57 (five years ago)

Boseman was a skilled, charismatic actor who specialized in inhabiting black icons and died too young in a surprising fashion. That is gonna fuck people up under the best of the circumstances but, in a moment where the senseless death of young black men is so prominent among a sizable segment of daily media and life, the too-soon death of the Black Panther just feels cruel.

Breaking my twitter silence to share some beauty. This was one of my final texts from the brilliant & once-in-lifetime talent, @chadwickboseman - take this in & celebrate life. Content, composition and training, these are the components needed for a good photograph: Jürgen Schadeberg always spoke of this concept and applied it to his work. A passionate photographer, courageous and with a humanistic eye – he has now passed away at age 89.#Leica pic.twitter.com/L3LWA8TrMW

Been out all day, just heard this. I became a fan during the 1970 WS, so I missed his glory season by a year. At least until Clemens/Maddux/Martinez/Johnson (and more recently Kershaw), the greatest pitcher of my lifetime as a fan.

"Bullshit jobs", as a concept, has been very very handy to me in terms of broaching labor politics and all kinds of other subjects with co-workers and acquaintances whose political orientation (or much more often lack thereof) I have no knowledge of. So thanks for that DG

scampus unrest (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 3 September 2020 13:59 (five years ago)

I always appreciated that, despite his academic background, his books (the two I've read anyway, Debt and BS Jobs) are low on jargon and accessible without being (or feeling) dumbed down. That's a rare gift.

I often saw him pottering about the SCR at LSE, reading the Telegraph in what I can only assume was a "know your enemy" kind of way. He will be sorely missed.
