I've been offline for several days, but I did watch the VP debate. Most of it was the usual carefully crafted talking points, some blatant lies from Pence, and the frequent evasion of direct questions by both participants, but there was one moment that genuinely astounded me. It was when Vice President Pence, speaking to a wide cross-section of tens of millions of Americans, referred to Representative Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) as "AOC" with no further explanation of who he was speaking about.

That sort of three-initials fame in the USA has been limited until now to FDR, JFK, and LBJ. And she's a first term congressional rep! That moment truly gobsmacked me.

You know, I noticed that, too. At first I thought it was a sign of disrespect, but then I thought it was a symbol (however unintentional) of her power.

disappointed, I assumed she would be streaming rimworld

she is chilling on her twitch stream, with 240K viewers (and rising), getting ready to play some game, and also talking about voting on the WFP line for people in NY, and distributing resources for how to vote for people in other areas (most of which are probably younger(?)), all the while in a very natural way, without reading a script, not in a rehearsed way, in a honest, vulnerable way. very few people in congress can pull all of that off right now.

There may have been another earlier - I dipped in late and just kept half an earphone on to pay better attention when she was chatting about policy or asking a UK player how the NHS works at point of service. Most of the time she was just talking through her exploring the game - "if I open this, will it kill me?" - when the other players weren't in the same room / screen.
