I almost bought that one when I moved into a place with a gas stove but there were too many hot, fiddly, breakable glass bits for me.

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Friday, 21 August 2020 00:44 (five years ago)

I’ve broken the top part once but the whole thing only cost 30 dollars and a new glass was 10. I really like the taste, it’s somehow smoother and cleaner than filter or press.

American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Friday, 21 August 2020 01:33 (five years ago)

so this may be a dumb question but do you actually light some kind of flame under the bottom to use it?

call all destroyer, Friday, 21 August 2020 01:38 (five years ago)

A burner or I’ve seen some using like a Benson Burner setup or can of sterno.

KitchenAid makes an electric one.

It’s a little spirit burner, runs on meths/alcohol. Electric burners and all electric ones are available.

Bodum does an electric one I’ve had my eye on.

That looked like a lot of grounds for that much water. If the "6 cups" was the standard coffee carafe 6 cups and the scoops were standard scoops, that is four times what I use in my drip machine.

nickn, Friday, 21 August 2020 06:04 (five years ago)

I love cold brew, but all my attempts to make it so far have sucked. It is burning a hole in my bank account. Any tips on how to succeed in DIYing it, please share!

A friend who knows a lot more than I do pointed me to this recipe: https://www.stumptowncoffee.com/blog/cold-brewing-frequently-asked-questions

Works fine for me, though idk how picky I am

I wish I could drink coffee more than twice a day ... just perpetually rising ... the best part of the day always before me ...

My momma bought me beans from Bump 'n' Grind in Silver Spring MD. Really good. She loves me, or at least she loves coffee and wants to share her addiction.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Saturday, 29 August 2020 04:20 (five years ago)

I had to give up coffee, other than the rare decaf cappuccino, had to accept it makes me hyper-anxious and annoys my bowels. I miss the buzz. I drink a decent amount of tea as befits someone from Britain, the decrease in caffeine per dose really makes a difference for me.

Still a very sad situation.

I switched to a hand grinder while on vacation and first few batches the grind was too fine for the dripper I’m using and coffee tasted kind of flat and had some bitter notes. Today I got it to a coarser grind that is working for me.

We are treating ourselves to one of these Technivorm Mocca Masters. It's such a lovely-looking thing. Plus, you know, coffee.

trishyb, Wednesday, 2 September 2020 08:56 (five years ago)

^^I have been using one for years, I think it's really great

Dan S, Thursday, 3 September 2020 23:16 (five years ago)

A friend of mine got me a bag of her favorite coffee. I really don't like it but it would be wasteful to throw. it away. Is there a cake recipe or something that will use a pound of coffee

lukas, Monday, 7 September 2020 01:03 (five years ago)

maybe something like tiramisu ie soaking cake in coffee

but tiramisu is kind of a pain to make

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 7 September 2020 01:28 (five years ago)

Botched my first pourover today and had to toss it and make a new one, so that helped.

lukas, Monday, 7 September 2020 21:05 (five years ago)

How about poundcake, but substitute coffee for the flour? Texture might be lacking but I bet it would be memorable.

assert (MatthewK), Tuesday, 8 September 2020 03:23 (five years ago)

plus, gluten free

assert (MatthewK), Tuesday, 8 September 2020 03:24 (five years ago)

This is the creative thinking I deserve.

lukas, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 03:25 (five years ago)

My wife bought a giant bag of costco coffee out of panic in march and it is shitty as pour over / french press but is surprisingly good as cold brew

joygoat, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 03:36 (five years ago)

good call thanks

lukas, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 05:42 (five years ago)

This thing looks soooo sick, but still not shelling out $150 for a kettle rn.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 11 September 2020 02:09 (five years ago)

it is pretty cute. i'd like an electric kettle but i can't have any more things sitting on my small counter space. my oxo kettle doesn't whistle anymore because it fell from a top shelf and the whistle broke :(

contorted filbert (harbl), Friday, 11 September 2020 02:14 (five years ago)

Fwiw just realized that bodum makes an almost as nice looking electric gooseneck kettle for $35. Maybe I’ll get that when I eventually replace my shitty one.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 11 September 2020 02:18 (five years ago)

In fact even the Hario one is only $72. So fuck that.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 11 September 2020 02:20 (five years ago)

We've been using a stainless steel french press for years, neither of us drink enough coffee at home to justify more than that. Beans are the organic fair trade from Aldi, which are a fabulous deal, though obviously not the best coffee I've ever had.

healthy cocaine off perfect butts (the table is the table), Friday, 11 September 2020 02:20 (five years ago)

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 11 September 2020 04:12 (five years ago)

Our lime green Moccamaster is the business. The coffee is great, and it looks like we have a tiny old airport in our kitchen. We have it on a timer so the coffee is ready when we get up in the morning. Ok, that means husband has to prep the coffee the night before, but it's worth it.
