Probably!
There is an issue here re the desire to categorize people into good and bad boxes. Something thats perhaps inevitable in some cases but not something to be aimed for
― anvil, Saturday, 8 August 2020 16:34 (five years ago)
yeah, the people in here I'd consider "problematic" are for wildly different reasons and to different degrees. some are worth engaging with, others obviously not so much.

The Citations Needed on house flipping shows is good. I liked Rehab Addict for being a This Old House with less flannel, showing the work going into remodeling etc., but I had no idea there were so many flipping shows now.
― Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Monday, 10 August 2020 19:40 (five years ago)
i keep meaning to listen to that house flipping show episode. there's always one going on one of the gym TVs, which is also where i listen to all podcasts now, so that will be a nice background.
anyway

Lucky. I can barely read anymore unless it’s light fiction. My attention span has been so battered that even during the current moment, trying to consume 20 pages of history is a chore.

Matt's vlogs have been more reliable entertainment than the pod for a while. This was a good one, which ended up being mostly about love:

Definitely. There is an RSS feed someone automated so you can get it as a podcast..https://www.listennotes.com/podcasts/cushvlogs-audio-matt-christman-chapo-trap-ItrHqPV-6e7/As a copy of the YouTube copy of the Twitch, there's a substantial delay. i look forward to this one you mentioned. He mentioned there'll be a proper podcast later, and extra time on Twitch for paying Katamari Damacy! Big plans

nice.he had me up through “groceries” (def southern, partic AAVE) lol, but that doesn’t dismantle his theory that those movies are written by algorithm

then that makes it even weirder! I mean it’s a very minor point in his off the dome rant but I was like “he’s probably very literally never heard ‘Grits Ain’t Groceries’ on the radio”

Death, the ultimate hot couch guy.
I've now heard the linked episode, was good. Agree the quoted movie has a weird use of "groceries" but I imagine it's perfectly cromulent somewhere. I really glaze over when he starts rambling about squibs and little movie things. But I don't bother with superhero or action movies nearly as much as he does. You have to admire his sacrifice.

yeah I neglected to mention you can safely stop that stream I linked when he starts going off about squibs lol

― contorted filbert (harbl), Friday, 4 September 2020 20:17 (five years ago)
he's saying once you bring groceries into your home they are no longer groceries. they are food (or more specifically, they're bananas, peanut butter, beef, etc.) the line in the movie is something like, some people look in their fridge and see that it's empty, and proclaim, "we're out of groceries"

yeah, the only two strains of content I need from any of these ppl are the reading series and some of Matt's more cogent/reflective big-picture solo stuff. and as little amber as possible

Not all the way through the Pepe episode but really enjoying it. Will is such a sharp and articulate guy and a very good interviewer, and I think his energy gets kind of squashed by the others at times, or he focuses it more on keeping the show moving. I'm sort of bored of Felix and Amber and Virgil and would really listen a lot more to content consisting solely of Matt's rantings and Will's interviews.
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 11 September 2020 14:32 (five years ago)
Pepe episode was very good - they are often good at those kinds of episodes when they aren't filling space as they often seem to be recently.

Amber should stick to writing - this book review / screed is solid.
As it functions now, a hashtag campaign is largely an exercise in liberal networking. It offers in-group recognition, the illusion of power, the potential for moral absolution, and sometimes, conveniently enough, professional advantages for the enterprising white-collar progressive. For the more earnest social justice advocate — who probably works at a “job” rather than a “career” — Twitter allows them to participate in “the conversation,” where they can bear witness to suffering among like-minded people, even if it results in little more than a collective, therapeutic wailing into the privately owned digital void. If the authors’ political goals are largely PR campaigns, therapy, and consciousness raising for a more merciful middle class, it’s fair to say that Twitter has been wildly successful.Only a few paragraphs of #HashtagActivism refer to the potentially nefarious machinations of Twitter — and they are all buried in the book’s afterword. In a publication about politics on social media, fewer than six pages are dedicated solely to the politics of social media. Net neutrality, surveillance, censorship, trolls, misinformation campaigns, and bots all appear to be minor concerns in the otherwise auspicious estimation of Twitter as a powerful and positive force. The authors do, however, appear to be concerned about Russiagate. This paranoid insularity and PMC subculturalism can only exacerbate atomization and political obscurantism, even more than the New Left ever could. Yet there is a resistance to any consideration of its weaknesses, and a failure to even to address its potential detriments. Much of this stems from a fetish for novelty that has flourished since the cultural turn pronounced the death of dusty old class politics. Social media’s newness is taken as evidence of its potential, even when its own partisans write a book explicitly chronicling its 100 percent failure rate. At the heart of this denial is an ideology of will; this has to work, because it’s all that we have left — all the while, its greatest advocates sing its praises amid an unbroken record of defeat.
