How did it feel to have blind people come at you on Twitter anyway?
― pplains, Wednesday, 5 August 2020 13:25 (five years ago)

why can’t we all just start using chord keyboards NOW. bill english used one in the original “mother of all tech demos”. it’s beyond insane to me that EVEN WITH A TOUCH SCREEN we’re still using a 1-to-1 representation of the alphabet that dates from an era when the layout of the keys was dictated by which metal levers would be least likely to interfere with each other when fired in rapid succession.
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 5 August 2020 18:22 (five years ago)
bc we all learned on that one

Threads like this are a wild ride
I haven’t spoken with @TheEllenShow and can only speak from my own experience. She & her team have only treated me & my team w/ respect & kindness. She never pandered to celebrity which I always saw as a refreshing honesty. When things aren’t right she handles it and fixes.— ashton kutcher (@aplusk) August 5, 2020

Still kinda blows me away when people like Ashton actually get into the responding to the replies like that. Although I thought it was hilarious whenever Seth Rogen did it to specifically tell all the MAGAs to fuck off.

“This account owner limits who can view their tweets”?? OK, how do I join the tweeter’s exclusive private club?
― Mr. Snrub, Friday, 28 August 2020 11:10 (five years ago)
That's what it says when someone has blocked you, right? It's what I see when someone quotes or replies to Emily Nussbaum.
― jaymc, Friday, 28 August 2020 14:14 (five years ago)
it's also what you see if they've set their account to private

Oh, right. In which case, you can just click to Follow them, but they have to approve it.

the blocked message just says "youre blocked" lol

― lag∞n, Friday, 28 August 2020 15:22 (five years ago)
it says you’re blocked when you navigate to the profile page but “unavailable” when it’s quote tweeted or in a reply chain
― maura, Saturday, 29 August 2020 13:12 (five years ago)
just got one that said "this is not available to you"
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 2 September 2020 19:35 (five years ago)
Yeah, it's only their profile where is says explicitly that you are blocked. I've only ever been blocked once that I know of, and by Tom Scharpling, of all people. I made a stupid, badly formed joke about wrestling in response to something he tweeted and he made fun of me for only having 40 followers and then blocked me, all within like 30 seconds.
It really only sucks because now, five or six years later, I never get to see the rare times he shares big news on Twitter and all I see are blank retweets from other Best Show guys and FOT.
― soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 2 September 2020 19:45 (five years ago)
What was the joke
― ℺ ☽ ⋠ ⏎ (✖), Wednesday, 2 September 2020 21:26 (five years ago)
I honestly don't even remember. It wasn't really a structured joke, but an attempt to be humorous in response to something he tweeted about all wrestling fans being dumb and he didn't like it.

A book review by Max:
https://www.bookforum.com/print/2703/a-psychoanalytic-reading-of-social-media-and-the-death-drive-24171
What if the urge lurking behind our compulsive participation in the Twittering Machine is not the behavioralist pursuit of maximized pleasure, but the Freudian death drive -- our latent instinct toward inorganic oblivion, destruction, self-obliteration, “the ratio”? What if we post self-sabotaging things because we want to sabotage ourselves? What if the reason we tweet is because we wish we were dead?On the one hand, that sounds like Freudian mumbo jumbo. On the other hand, speaking as a frequent user of social media, that . . . seems about right to me.

if you dont tell me the joke im gonna block you
Haha, I genuinely wish I could remember it. It was so stupid and ill formed though, just bummed me out that of all the people to be blocked by on twitter it was someone I genuinely really liked and not some hack I was trying to get a rise out of.

I've found my groove on twitter. It is way less terrible when I limit my exposure to "politics" on there, to only very local people & to writers on African politics. I hate English-language "media twitter style" writing, think I also hate "I'm so wacky" stuff too, but sticking only to my most core interests (I'm not following anything about music there, ILM is sufficient), I get how twitter can be good & useful.
