I prob should raise my thermostat a few degrees so AC doesn't explode

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 31 July 2020 20:06 (five years ago)

People who love hot weather and are like ISN’T THIS GREAT, especially when the weather is only going to get even hotter and eventually kill us all, are the worst. No questions at this time.

You think clearly and are of sane mind. You may proceed with living your life.

I lived in south Texas for four years, there were no joys in sweltering at 40C+. one of the many reasons I came here was to avoid usa midwestern summer heat, but as gyac notes there is no escape from global warming. gonna make granitas now.

This is also a rational mindset. Thank you very much for your contribution to this thread.

Those of you actually embracing the summer heat: do understand that as a native Texan (and someone from a Mexican family) I automatically see you as having something wrong with you and needing to seek out professional help. I've already lived a lifetime's worth of heat and sun, as have my antecedents. If I had the ability to live out the rest of my life in a location with a paucity of both and leave places such as the U.S. Sun Belt to those of you lacking sanity, I would.

Move up north in January, then we'll talk.

pomenitul, Friday, 31 July 2020 21:00 (five years ago)

Wasn’t it 54C in Iraq this week? 20C hotter than London today.

Michael Jones, Friday, 31 July 2020 21:03 (five years ago)

Here's our low temperatures for tonight. 60ºF = 15.5ºC....... 70º=21º

Maybe I'm on the wrong thread though. :-P

Presumably less contentious than Little Rockist.

pomenitul, Friday, 31 July 2020 21:34 (five years ago)

I can't stand heat. Not sure why I live in Florida, lol.

When I start fantasizing about winning the lottery the main reason is to be able to buy two homes, one in Tampa for the 65 degree F (18 C) winters, and another one in Portland, OR for the 75 degree summers.

Here's the shitty thing about a lot places that are cold af in winter, the US Midwest in particular: it also gets uncomfortably warm and muggy in the summer! You spend winter fantasizing about how nice it'll be once it's not freezing, all the stuff you'll be able to do, you get a couple nice weeks of Spring weather, and then the heat, humidity, and bugs descend upon you and you fantasize about the arrival of cool Autumn weather! At least here in AZ I merely have to wait until the sun goes down to get relief.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 31 July 2020 21:46 (five years ago)

Been thinking a lot about northern NM for that reason.

Irritable Baal (WmC), Saturday, 1 August 2020 13:52 (five years ago)

one undeniable upside of heat is that cold showers are wonderful. whereas exiting a hot shower in winter is one of the worst casual sensations in existence

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Saturday, 1 August 2020 14:00 (five years ago)

Preach it.

pomenitul, Saturday, 1 August 2020 14:10 (five years ago)

Lukewarm showers work better for me for some reason, but the pre bed shower is a classic.

Winter is for baths.

The place we recently moved into only comes with a shower, so I can no longer pretend that I'm finally going to pick up my love of baths where I left it off, uh, 25 years ago.

pomenitul, Saturday, 1 August 2020 14:20 (five years ago)

sunburnt ffs

The only thing getting me through my 18th DC summer is the conviction that I will not be enduring a 19th.

See, I would much rather move further north than that to Canada or England where there isn't quite the issue with regards to sizzling hot summer temperatures. I mean, they still happen, it's just that it lasts for a significantly shorter period of time. But even with that, you all still manage to have all four seasons up in the upper Midwest. Down here where I'm from you get slightly cooler than Hades, fuck me I'm burning alive, it doesn't feel quite like an oven, and a couple of blissful months of actually being able to enjoy hot beverages such as hot chocolate and cider. And seeing as though I have a deep and abiding hatred of the sun and this is the second summer I've gone without using any air conditioning, it's not exactly happy fun times for me. (Also, I too lack a tub. Only shower stalls in the bathrooms at home.)

We Live as We Dee, Alone (deethelurker), Sunday, 2 August 2020 00:32 (five years ago)

I am rarely, if ever, cold. I don't know what it feels like to be cold really, not in winter either. There's a sort of dormant heater built inside. Which is nice 3/4's of the year, except in summer. I love a cool shower in summer as much as anyone, except for the getting out part, when the cooling feeling literally evaporates and the sweat breaks out twice as fast.

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 2 August 2020 09:16 (five years ago)

Yep you're def in the wrong place if you hate the sun, Dee! I love it, find it invigorating. I'll hike all day long in the desert on 105 degree it, working up a good sweat, happy as a pig in shit.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Sunday, 2 August 2020 10:49 (five years ago)

it's 87 with a 76 dewpoint and that's fuckin serious

mookieproof, Sunday, 2 August 2020 21:06 (five years ago)

We in the US have AC. I really feel for people in West Europe.

Sanpaku, Sunday, 2 August 2020 21:10 (five years ago)

What boggles my mind is the heat in parts of Africa and India, in nearly every month of the year. And I assume there's very little AC.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Sunday, 2 August 2020 21:33 (five years ago)

(xp) Scotland and Ireland are doing fine there.

Hey, not my fault my stupid ancestors decided to move to this fireplace of a location hundreds or thousands of years ago. Stupid indigenous and Spanish idiots (and the one Irish moron who came over on my dad's side of the family). But thanks for reminding me to do some research on in-demand industries in my preferred locales so I can GTFO of this place and not have to see the sun so goddamned much.

Cloudy Days a Year

That explains a lot.

35-36C twice within a week in London. 4-5 days in a row of 30+ is itself still not all that common here but that's what we're looking at.

But it occurs to me...can my body really tell the difference between 30C and 36C? If I just refuse to acknowledge it's higher than 30 maybe I can cope better.

Really I'm just disappointed (as well as alarmed) that the first times I've experienced heat quite this high (as we did one or two days last year too) is in my home country.

nashwan, Friday, 7 August 2020 10:11 (five years ago)

the next day the high here will be under 35C is...next Thursday. utterly disgusting.

Joey Corona (Euler), Friday, 7 August 2020 10:15 (five years ago)

I am on frozen water bottle rotation, mist spray bottle in fridge, cold salad for lunch and ice cream later to reward myself for working all day in this hell miasma.

santa clause four (suzy), Friday, 7 August 2020 11:43 (five years ago)

We had a really nice 10-day cool stretch but it's back to the (ab)normal August starting today.

Scampi Runamuck (WmC), Friday, 7 August 2020 11:57 (five years ago)

miserable pissy rain here at lunch time

I'll bet it can. It was very warm when I left to walk to work this morning, by the time I got there - 40 minutes later - it was stiflingly hot.

Udo Starmer (Tom D.), Friday, 7 August 2020 12:49 (five years ago)

High for tomorrow keeps getting revised downwards, was 34 now 30. 🤞🏻

it's hell

Joey Corona (Euler), Monday, 10 August 2020 12:58 (five years ago)

Maximum temperatures today are expected to reach between 30 and 32 degrees Celsius with Humidex values near 41

hell yeah let's fucking go

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Monday, 10 August 2020 13:13 (five years ago)

Same here, more or less. As it should be.

pomenitul, Monday, 10 August 2020 13:16 (five years ago)

good day to add some sprints to my run :)

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Monday, 10 August 2020 13:16 (five years ago)

I assume you hell lovers have aircon at home? all I can do is keep the blinds down and the windows closed (even at night it only gets down to 26) & so each day this drags on, it gets hotter inside, with no way to relief, save destroying the planet

Joey Corona (Euler), Monday, 10 August 2020 13:22 (five years ago)

my new place does not have AC but I suspect every other unit does cause it's quite temperate

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Monday, 10 August 2020 13:23 (five years ago)

29.5 inside my apartment right now

Joey Corona (Euler), Monday, 10 August 2020 13:25 (five years ago)

We've only got AC in the bedroom, so when I'm not sleeping I'm in the hammam. As it should be.

pomenitul, Monday, 10 August 2020 13:26 (five years ago)

no AC here. i sleep in the loft. it’s.... interesting

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Monday, 10 August 2020 13:27 (five years ago)

I feel for you Euler, having it this hot in an apartment in Paris is indeed hell.

No airco here, inside it's up to 28. There's a bit of a breeze though, we've been opening all doors and windows after 22.00 to get some of the heat out. It brought it down to 26 last night.

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 10 August 2020 13:33 (five years ago)

yeah opening the windows doesn't help when outside it's staying 26+ all night. it's the heat effect of this glorious concrete capital. there was some wind last night with all the convection but during the days, like now, just stillness.

Joey Corona (Euler), Monday, 10 August 2020 13:35 (five years ago)

Yeah, and like you said, it's the city that retains the heat. Saw the metéo on F2 last night. Only place of refuge you can go to seems to be Bretagne.

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 10 August 2020 13:38 (five years ago)

yes, Bretagne is ok, and the southeast isn't that bad, Marseille to Menton. but the major part of the country is just sunk under this humid glove. Even Madrid is doing better.

Joey Corona (Euler), Monday, 10 August 2020 13:43 (five years ago)

Lol no I have never had Aircon except on holiday
