Mitch & Co know how to steal elections in Nov/Dec (20th anniversary tour).

XP: There's been a group of ~80 leaders emeritus who've gamed out scenarios for how Trump can interfere with electoral results:

WBUR: On Point: This War Game Maps Out What Happens If The President Contests The Election.

IIRC, delaying the election wasn't mentioned, but there's a lot of dire things that Trump could do, particularly with mail-in ballots. Voter suppression leads to a closer election than polls, a contested swing state, Covid-19 scare used to prevent mail in ballot counting, the DHS nazis called to street protests, and there's no one in the government in a good position to fight back. The presidency holds all the Federal law enforcement, and the career millitary guy on the program (Lawrence Wilkerson, aide to Sec State Powell) was practically begging the military to stay in their barrocks.

Sanpaku, Thursday, 30 July 2020 18:13 (three years ago) link

Voter suppression is one they're already actively pursuing.

They have to lean on state legislatures and Governors for that, but they have enough cronies to do that around the country.

ACLU probably gonna be at the ready with tons of state lawsuits for States disenfranchising voters or disallowing vote by mail. I don't have huge confidence that this SCOTUS would rule in their favor on most, but...gotta try.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/29/politics/trump-economic-approval-rating-analysis/index.html

But Trump now may be seeing this advantage dissipate. His approval on the economy has seen a dramatic decline since the beginning of the year, and he's lost his edge on the economy over former Vice President Joe Biden.

NO WAY, Harry!

I do love how he's losing his "edge" to someone who is, afaict, literally doing next to nothing beyond existing as an alternative. Trump would probably lose his edge to Pop-tarts.

Six months ago, I was making the electability argument for Bernie to anyone who would listen. Four months ago, I even voted for him. Now, I have to admit, I'm kind of glad that the nominee is a moderate who can promise baseline competency and won't scare anyone. That's not to say that Bernie wouldn't have won, but he would've made me nervous.

jaymc, Thursday, 30 July 2020 18:56 (three years ago) link

I think the fact that he kinda got stomped by Biden despite his core issues being more relevant than ever points to the fact that people just really fuckin hated Hillary Clinton

My friend Herman Cain, a Powerful Voice of Freedom and all that is good, passed away this morning. Herman had an incredible career and was adored by everyone that ever met him, especially me. He was a very special man, an American Patriot, and great friend. I just got off...

2016 was extremely weird in terms of both candidates having such high 'negatives' among voters. Trump's were higher than HRC's, but both were at historically high levels.

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Friday, 31 July 2020 01:07 (three years ago) link

President Donald Trump‘s baseless Wednesday morning question about postponing the 2020 general election has been given new life. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo suggested the final decision on any such postponement hinges upon whether Attorney General Bill Barr and others at the DOJ can find a legal justification to change the date.

“Can a president delay the November presidential election, Mr. Secretary?” Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) asked during a Senate hearing. “You are one of the most highly trained and accomplished lawyers who are part of this administration,” Kaine summarized, “Can a president delay a presidential election?”

To which Pompeo replied: “In the end, the Department of Justice, and others, will make that legal determination. We all should want – I know you do, too, Senator Kaine – want to make sure to have an election that everyone is confident in.”

1. this cryptic tweet from a guy who i know some people here don't like, but he does have a record of calling squad-related races

https://t.co/mxFreGNhkC https://t.co/jvD0DrzTTR

— sean (@SeanMcElwee) July 29, 2020

that's this PAC https://theintercept.com/2020/06/15/gop-republican-super-pac-eliot-engel-jamaal-bowman/ and they don't have a great record, and maybe they're spending it all on yard signs and i'm worrying about nothing.

2. one of my arguments that she wasn't in a real race was that, if the one of the best known and most hated people in congress was in a real primary then there would be national coverage but there wasn't any. and then there was some coverage.
