RIP, Peter Green. Wonder if he got to watch any of those videos of Haim performing “Oh Well.”

Anybody that can find the video of Regis totally screwing up the countdown during the New Years Eve balldrop will be my friend forever.

there will never be another Regis Francis Xavier Philbin

Maybe not, but hopefully there will be an all-boys high school named after him.

headlines tell me he was an "iconic TV host and actor"

did he pretend to like Joey Bishop or sumthin?

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 25 July 2020 20:23 (five years ago)

Billy Gibbons mentioned in one of those Rolling Stone 'My Life In 25 Songs' things that he came up with "Just Got Paid" while trying to figure out the "Oh Well" riff.

I apologize, I see that Regis played characters not named Regis Philbin in tons of TV shows as well as in Sextette and The Bad News Bears Go to Japan.

I only knew Regis from his Seinfeld appearance (other side of the ocean here), something he never reconciled with, exactly Regis Philbin still harboring 18 year old grudge against Jerry Seinfeld

In hockey lore, a true character: part of the '67 team, had a hit song written about him (#1 for two weeks in Toronto in 1966), opened up Eddie Shack Donuts in 1994. Last once closed in 2014...replaced by a Tim Hortons.

Longtime comic industry pro (DC, Marvel, Defiant, Valiant, Topps Comics, probably others) Carl Gafford died July 13, complications from diabetes, age 66. Gaff was a member of CAPA-alpha all the years I was in that APA, and was Central Mailer for the last several years. For the last few years, he went by the name Douglas Jones for reasons I was never 100% clear on.

Topps Comics, that takes me back...

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 27 July 2020 02:25 (five years ago)

The last print mailing of K-a was December 2016; Gaff's health was too poor to carry on collating and mailing the thing in physical form, and nobody else was willing to be CM. It switched over to an electronic form in 2017, still with Gaff CMing, still monthly. With the constraints of paper lifted, Gaff started doing zines of hundreds of pages per month, collections of comic strip reprints from what I could tell from the zine titles. (I still look at the Central Mailer's Comments each month, but left the APA in 1994 or 1995 so I didn't see anyone's zines except a few that were mailed to me directly.)

Singer Denise Johnson

Yeah, that news is making the rounds now -- a terrible shock. Lovely insta-thread by Sonic Cathedral with some of her best performances:

RIP Denise. No one person has sung on so many of my favourite records ever. Including this one. What desperately sad news 💔 https://t.co/wsm0EGZe4c

Elijah Cummings in a wig?

Thanks for the Carl Gafford remembrance, Wm - I know him from Paul Levitz' 1980s run on the various LSH books, which can't have been an easy gig.

Steppin' RZA (sic), Monday, 27 July 2020 21:05 (five years ago)

I met Denise when she sang with A Certain Ratio at one of the two Part Time Punks fests in LA (was that the one where I met Ned, or the other, I can't remember). My friend Adesh helps them out so we hung out with them. Right before ACR's show she had a crazy allergy attack so I had to drive her back to the Standard LA to get her inhaler or something. Had a nice chat, she was charming. Her loss is being felt big-time esp amongst manchester music world.

dan selzer, Monday, 27 July 2020 21:23 (five years ago)

xp thanks, sic. From Dwight Decker's obit thread on Faceache, Gaff didn't like the name Carl (and liked the original spelling of Karl even less), so later in life he took the name Douglas (his middle name) Jones (his wife's last name). He always went by Gaff on K-a though.
