all cats are beautiful (silby), Sunday, 12 July 2020 19:14 (five years ago)

I don't care that any of you don't care about what I don't care about.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 12 July 2020 19:50 (five years ago)

Take it to the "who cares?" thread.

wow, harsh fuckin' way to start the thread

Kate (rushomancy), Sunday, 12 July 2020 23:10 (five years ago)

this thread swings reliably back and forth between mild quirky internet person stuff like "i don't care about the oxford comma" and vaguely sociopathic stances like "i don't care when animals go extinct"

frustration about the specific naming of ilx threads

― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, July 12, 2020 4:57 PM (two hours ago) bookmarkflaglink

i almost made a post here along the lines of "what ILX threads are called. terrible japanese cinema, X singer has a terrible voice, why does anybody give a fuck about band Y. just don't care, i'm here for the discussion and it seems to me anyway that it's all in good fun and this place's way of accepting it's weird past or something"

think it was because there's a thread on another board about thread titles and how horrible and obnoxious they are. idk.

but then of course i had to complain about a thread title that's about a band i've never heard to the best of my knowledge so i guess i'm a lame cranky hypocrite.

thread: your lame cranky hyPOLLcrisy: your biggest POLL peeve about relatively anodyne ILX thread names

I almost bailed out of HBO's Watchmen show because it started with a number from Oklahoma! (punctuation in original, for those who don't know).

Summer jams.

pomenitul, Saturday, 18 July 2020 15:15 (five years ago)

…especially in 2020. But they're oppressive even at the best of times and remind me of Shostakovich's apocryphal description of the ending to his 5th Symphony:

I think it is clear to everyone what happens in the Fifth. The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, as in Boris Godunov. It's as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, "Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing," and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering, "Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing."

pomenitul, Saturday, 18 July 2020 15:20 (five years ago)

Still magnitudes less insufferable than musicals tho.

pomenitul, Saturday, 18 July 2020 15:21 (five years ago)

maaaaaaan, I used to love summer jams. are you specifically targeting songs ABOUT summer, or songs that get hot IN the summer about partying/etc.

Lady Antibody (Neanderthal), Saturday, 18 July 2020 15:23 (five years ago)

or just fun

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 18 July 2020 15:28 (five years ago)

Nah, I like fun, just not the forced kind.

Neanderthal: the latter.

pomenitul, Saturday, 18 July 2020 15:40 (five years ago)

i think the "summer jam" is essentially a memento of good weather during bacchanal or relaxation. I agree that the "2020 Summer Jam Question" is thus effectively obviated but any music that brings me up right now is dearly welcomed and necessary. Similarly, any music that's trying too hard to be an anthem is unnecessary, yes.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 18 July 2020 16:25 (five years ago)

"Lean Back" just about made my summer of 2004

Lady Antibody (Neanderthal), Saturday, 18 July 2020 16:31 (five years ago)

since I was broke and couldn't afford to do fun party shit, hearing other people do it had to suffice

I can get behind that.

idk when I think of summer jams I think of stuff like “it was a good day”

^^^ otm, or even showering tbh

ehhhhh, i get the public health issues and the statement of public welfare that wearing a mask indoors represents and I can deal with that.

it's just like... they're reopening the BK Botanic Garden next week and they're bringing in 25% capacity and requiring timed, ticketed entrance which all makes sense... but they are also require on-site masking. Which seems like overkill for a multi-acre outdoor space? I presume it's because people are assholes and are going to either throw a fit because someone who doesn't have a mask is near them or else throw a fit because they can't properly respect other's space enough to make it work without an institutional decree. Regardless, going to a public garden in 90 degree heat with a mask is not striking me as a relaxing day out.

i have friends who work at the BK one; there were funding issues obviously and questions about safety. But yeah, there was an obvious roadmap to reopening those green spaces and the city's deprioritization of it is telling.
