sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Monday, 6 July 2020 03:49 (three years ago) link

That sounds kind of weird to me. You don't know elitist libertarians? I sure have...

Nhex, Monday, 6 July 2020 05:12 (three years ago) link

Self-described libertarians are more likely to not like the cops or military much either.

Not pretending otherwise conservatives like cops because they harass and kill the people the conservatives don't like, they also generally hate local and state government when it's not actively enforcing their worldview. Damn zoning rules keeping me down! I have to get a PERMIT to build my backyard GUN RANGE in this suburban cul-de-sac? TYRANNY.

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Monday, 6 July 2020 06:44 (three years ago) link

The divisions on the right only come out when you have a vote on like funding a new baseball stadium or something - the pro-business conservatives are on board because they love welfare for the rich, the deep reactionaries are opposed because taxes are inherently evil, the libertarians split the difference depending on what the taxes are.

he's really running on statues and sports team names huh?

lol yes this is a winning platform

@realDonaldTrump
They name teams out of STRENGTH, not weakness, but now the Washington Redskins & Cleveland Indians, two fabled sports franchises, look like they are going to be changing their names in order to be politically correct. Indians, like Elizabeth Warren, must be very angry right now!

He's kind of obsessed with Warren, huh?

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 6 July 2020 18:34 (three years ago) link

xp well he's running on culture wars aspects of racism, which are really only of interest to a fraction of our nation's racists.

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Monday, 6 July 2020 18:40 (three years ago) link

He just sees attacks on Warren as bolstering his popularity with his fan base. He never neglects to feed them sure-fire applause lines each and every day. No matter how hackneyed and overdone they are, he'll fall back on them because his audience expects them and delights in them neverendingly.

here is the first NSA of the trump administration taking the Q oath, "where we go one, we go all"

Travis View, host of the QAnon Anonymous podcast, said Sunday that Flynn’s β€œoath” the previous night was β€œpart of a years long pattern of signaling to the QAnon community.” Two years ago, View noted, Flynn was inscribing books with the β€œWhere We Go 1 We Go All” slogan.

Honestly, I could not care less about what Flynn is doing with his time right now. Let him go full wackjob. I'd rather worry about how this administration is working overtime to even kick out the immigrants doing things "the right way".

This is insane. Surely this is a feint of some kind. Classes start in two months, they’ve already been paid for.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Monday, 6 July 2020 21:23 (three years ago) link

I absolutely agree that it is insane. But I'm also going to venture that no one in this administration or at ICE gives one flying fig about how much a student may have paid for their classes.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 6 July 2020 21:25 (three years ago) link

it seems likely to have the predictable but unintended consequence that schools will not go online-only to accommodate students who would otherwise have to leave the US, thus ensuring a third wave of covid in the fall.

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Monday, 6 July 2020 21:26 (three years ago) link

This is insane. It places foreign students who are essentially helpless in a middle of huge argument over online vs in-person teaching. No university will be able to go fully online (which is arguably the medically responsible thing to do) if it shafts their students like this. https://t.co/n8h1J1BA3J

xps

this is probably way off and it also sounds like a conservative warning from the mid-90s, but i wonder how much of the rise of the Q bullshit is related to the demise of the centrality of religion to people's lives? some of this stuff just seems like people desperate for evidence of a higher power or force that guides things.

that was my first thought. it seems like an inevitable trump admin policy because it supports covid denial and nationalism at the same time

So far, the monetization of QAnon has been done by amateurs and small time grifters. I'm guessing Flynn just sees a fallow field and wants to grow his cash income.

the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Monday, 6 July 2020 22:19 (three years ago) link

The order concerning foreign students in the USA revolts me but does not surprise me. I have been advising students to avoid going to the USA for some time. This may get the message through. It is not a safe place.

xp that's the thing they're trying to communicate. i don't think they care about whether campuses reopen this year, or whether these specific students go home. they are trying to diminish campuses as 1) a place where "liberals" are created 2) a route through which people enter the US. anything that creates uncertainty this year is good for _years_ of uncertainty.

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Monday, 6 July 2020 22:43 (three years ago) link

this is the least important thing right now but how are you supposed to use your school's libraries, archives, laboratories, whatever else a grad student needs if you are in your home country? it's like these people don't know what school is.

Not just grad students!

57% of the usa’s 1 million foreign students are from China, India, and South Korea. Universities are counting on that money, especially public universities.

Still going to be in the midst of the first wave for most of the country, so it's fine.

HRC tried as hard as she could to publicize Trump's business frauds and failures. It made no difference. By now everyone on earth has seen enough of him and they know just where they stand, pro or con; nothing Biden does or says will alter that. Even Biden knows he is basically a bystander in this election.
