Who'd want to live in this fucking dump?

Future England Captain (Tom D.), Wednesday, 1 July 2020 14:22 (four years ago) link

In terms of inflicting a brain drain and capital flight on China it will only cause short term and limited damage to the mighty Leviathon! and will there actually be enough quality jobs on this little racist island of Rona with a rapidly shrinking economy to even attract that many HK citizens beyond the low thousands?

calzino, Wednesday, 1 July 2020 14:23 (four years ago) link

My friend's mum is moving to the UK right now so that's one person. xposts

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 1 July 2020 14:24 (four years ago) link

To qualify, you need to be over the age of 23 (which excludes a large proportion of the protesters). aiui, the proposal gives a right to work / study for 12 months without additional visas - an upgrade from the 6 months at present. However, you also get 'no recourse to public funds' status, meaning the government provides absolutely no support.

I'm not sure "Global Britain" can afford to piss off China now they are a lower league feeder club!

Seems like rich Hongkongers would be the main beneficiaries then?

In part it's about undermining another world financial centre before shit gets real with Brexit, and an influx of Hong Kong bankers might make a few institutions think twice about moving operations out of London.

this page has actually good figures for H&F

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51768274

(Kensington and Chelsea are above the line, Ealing pretty much on the line)

but i'm wondering if the two hospitals are skewing things.

koogs, Wednesday, 1 July 2020 15:24 (four years ago) link

although that data seems to stop about 11 days ago.

The Indie says the following

"Some of the sharpest increases were in London boroughs, where the weekly figure rose from 7 to 18 in Hammersmith & Fulham, from 9 to 15 in Hounslow, 5 to 14 in Ealing, 6 to 14 in Westminster, 7 to 13 in Brent and 8 to 12 in Kensington and Chelsea."

True, but it does depend on how bad things get. Even presiding over tens of thousands could be quite damaging to the Tories. Remember a lot of people voted for migrants to fuck off back to wherever it is they came from.

This is still taking the hostility towards immigrants as an organic feeling derived from people's experiences and not a hysteria propped up by the press; I'm sure it's a little bit of both in the end but it seems very naive to me to think any real outrage could gain momentum without the latter, and that's never going to happen.

i doubt the Tories will make it racial openly, damn sure their (social) media arm will push it hard tho

OTM on both of those.

Future England Captain (Tom D.), Wednesday, 1 July 2020 16:27 (four years ago) link

I’m not sure HK bankers have ever had much trouble moving here - or many will want to in the current economic circumstances. We will see.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Wednesday, 1 July 2020 16:35 (four years ago) link

I don't think that needlessly pissing off Asian businessmen in Midlands marginals is going to be in the Tories' plan somehow. If they blame anyone it will be the workers.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 1 July 2020 16:37 (four years ago) link

May be paywalled but:

This is not about a few unscrupulous suppliers, it is Boohoo in particular who’s driving production during the lockdown,” Ms Lewis said.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Wednesday, 1 July 2020 16:42 (four years ago) link

"You should only leave the house to buy food, to exercise once a day, for medical reasons, to care for a vulnerable person, or to go to work (if you cannot work from home)".

These were the government's own guidelines during lockdown, they allowed clothing factories etc to stay open and left the choice up to employers, suspect they will prefer not to be reminded of that now it's fucked up in Leicester.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 1 July 2020 16:46 (four years ago) link

How will GFT look when we re-open?

Social distancing guidelines will mean that GFT will re-open with reduced capacity in all of its screens, using only approximately 20% of normal capacity. This means that the significant majority of seats will be kept vacant to allow adequate spacing of customers. Initially there will be fewer screenings per day, to avoid bottlenecks and to ensure we have the time for enhanced cleaning to be done between shows.

going to the cinema sounds like it will be fairly miserable

so the 'New Deal' in Cornwall is basically enough money to upgrade a single roundabout (£14m). the largest allocation is to the South East, which gets enough for some fairly minor A-road improvements or ~four miles of railway (£85m). and it's not new money https://t.co/AZgHoisB4e

Got to say I share the astonishment that it costs £14m to upgrade a roundabout.

chucking a bit of chump change about after a decade of austerity sure does remind me of FDR's radical spending plan.

calzino, Thursday, 2 July 2020 08:54 (four years ago) link

That really depends on the roundabout and the upgrade, Matt.
