Hey Karl what coff do ya'll recommend from Counter Culture, we are espresso/capp drinkers. I currently order locally from Harrar, which I love, but maybe want to mix it up a bit.

we're on a subscription that sends us 2 different bags every 2 weeks, so i've had almost all of them many times. but despite drinking tons of them, i think i'm a very poor judge of what's good, and why. also note that i'm not a regular espresso/capp drinker - most of the time i'm just drinking black coffee.
having said all that, i think my favorite is maybe their Haru. but maybe i just really like coffee from Kenya.

Paying for my sins this morning, the sin of not making cold brew last night when I meant to. Then I would have clinking icy delicious cold cof instead of this hot glass of it's 84 degrees out why am I doing this?

Coffee and I have been having a bit of a lovers' quarrel lately, IDK. Maybe it's COVID, maybe it's that I'm on a different workout regimen, but caffeine is suddenly affecting me a lot more harshly and worse, and I'm having some serious panic when I drink what used to be normal amounts for me. Cutting back but not giving up.

It hurt pretty bad that I bought myself a nice Stumptown single origin and that it made me feel so shitty today. Maybe I need to just make it a little weaker -- something I never thought I'd say.

i am having the same experience as man alive. i believe it's mostly due to work changes but my level of activity is way down generally and i don't get tired from everyday things like i used to. i didn't realize the relationship between that and my physical reaction to coffee; in my mind the arrow only went in one direction before (drink coffee-->feel more awake, not feel awake-->can't drink more coffee). i used to have a fairly active/v. exhausting job and would drink 2 large cups of coffee in the am and then sometimes have some during the day. now i have one normal-sized cup and if i have any more i get jittery and sweaty. what i am most intrigued by is that i'm not conscious of being significantly less tired. i feel as tired as usual but coffee is able to get to something hidden in your brain and it knows when you need it ooooOOOOOooooo
― contorted filbert (harbl), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 13:19 (four years ago) link
Same here, I've gone to putting half decaf/half reg in my coffee maker. Much better in terms of jitters but obviously the taste suffers.

probably dumb and condescending suggestion but maybe take a look at the size of yr. cups?
8 oz coffee is ~ 100mg caffeine2 oz espresso is ~ 120 mg caffeine
american mugs are stupid big and people fill 'em to like a hair from the brim, so they're usually drinking 16+ oz at a time, like ~ 200mg+/serving and that is actually an ass-ton of jitters.
use 6 or 8 oz cups and u will be happier, also the coffee stays hotter and u can feel accomplished at finishing them.

yeah for sure my cups are huge--i'm just talking comparatively. my mug is 16 oz. i used to be able to comfortably consume 2 of them in a morning, which yeah is a lot and i'm not sad that i can't anymore.

I've also experienced the coffee jitters for the first time - quite physically unpleasant. I suspect it's at least partly because I'm not moving around nearly as much as usual.
I don't feel I can get the day properly underway unless I've had 2 mugs of coffee in the morning, but I should probably cut down the several nespressos I'm having during the day (mainly through boredom and an excuse to take a short break from work).

One awesome day in DC I was jetlagged and hungover, walking to a conference, I stopped to buy a panini (which was great) and when I ordered an espresso the person serving me asked if I wanted small/medium/large, so I said "large" thinking it would be a double shot. To my delight she then grabbed a large cup and fired SEVEN shots in, filling it. The rest of the day was perfect.

I found by age 40 that coffee would cause me not to sleep very well if I drank it after about noon and also caused me to have to urinate a lot. /oldman
I basically quit drinking it a number of years ago, other than the odd cup on the weekend or after a meal. When I did drink it, I really noticed how much more wired I felt; after two cups, unpleasantly so.
Since coronavirus I am working from home and I've picked the habit back up because my wife has been making it every morning. At least we've been buying better coffee from a friend who owns a local roaster. We also bought a burr grinder and have been making a small french press with single origin light roasts and it's great.
My recommendation is basically to buy better coffee and drink less.

Yeah, that's the conclusion I reached. It's really hard to fight that urge to go get another cup just out of boredom, but I'm doing my best. I already feel myself on the edge of the anxiety state but not there, so that's reminding me not to drink any more.
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 29 July 2020 17:25 (four years ago) link
Yes otm. A stupid elaborate coffee-making process helps prevent a second cup as well.

Thinking I need to get myself a single-cup drip again -- I've been using a drip maker lately for reasons not worth explaining but it leads to coffee waste.

People think I’m nuts for grinding each cup I make myself, but really it’s about using my own laziness to keep myself in check. Any time I have free access to those pod things I will drink 10 cups without a thought.

Apologies for getting TMI but the other coffee problem I have is with it staining my teeth. When I was a smoker and drank coffee I had this problem all the time, but I quit smoking 8 years ago and when I quit drinking coffee mostly the staining problem went away entirely. I looked in the mirror the other day and noticed it was back after just 4 months of drinking 1-2 small cups of coffee per day.

ANYWAYFell into a James Hoffmann video fugue state today. I am tempted by the 9Barista, it seems like such a brilliant, gorgeous design and it would be cool to brew actual espresso, but it's 10x what my Aeropress cost. The next interesting-looking machine (the Decent Espresso) is another order of magnitude jump.My main takeaway from today is I should upgrade my grinder. (Later I'll practice saying "of course, the grinder is more important than the coffeemaker" into a mirror.) The Knock Aergrind seems like the entry-level audiophile choice here, and is, of course, out of stock.

i stopped going out for coffee during the early lockdown and resurrected my espresso stuff. i'm just rolling with a baratza encore and the ancient breville cafe roma my wife bought me for xmas in like our second year of dating (so a very long time ago), and figuring ignorance is bliss if i can make a drinkable espresso and don't look at pricey gear.

9Barista is £295 for a STOVETOP espresso? GTFO. Just buy a used Gaggia Classic, every morning I make a grind and brew an espresso of such good quality I'd happily pay for it.
