There is a thing going on right now where kpop fans flood racist hashtags with their ubiquitous "kpop stars dancing" gifs.
https://news.avclub.com/k-pop-fans-are-now-hard-at-work-commandeering-racist-ha-1843880487
Now please tell me if I'm wrong here, but doesn't flooding a hashtag actually make it trend? So what they are doing is actually bumping racist hashtags AND subjecting us to more of those inexplicable gifs? Am I wrong about this or is it actually as stupid as I think?

I still use the website and have set it to show Berlin trends and saw WhiteLivesMatter at the top of that list earlier - didn't actually click it just assumed it was 20% bot stampede and 80% horrified reaction.
― nashwan, Wednesday, 3 June 2020 22:25 (three years ago) link
That's the one. 100% kpop dancing gifs. What is the point? Why is it there?
― Anti-Cop Ponceortium (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 3 June 2020 22:27 (three years ago) link
individually people are pretty dumb, together they are infinitely so

image spamming trolls is a time-honoured internet tradition
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 3 June 2020 22:45 (three years ago) link
I get image spamming, but when it amplifies a racist hashtag then surely it's counterproductive.
― Anti-Cop Ponceortium (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 3 June 2020 22:53 (three years ago) link
? The hashtag was already beginning to trend. That's why the kpop trolls intervened.
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Wednesday, 3 June 2020 22:57 (three years ago) link
was it though? it suddenly appeared right at the top of my trending topics and was already full of the gifs. I guess perhaps it was pushed up there by bots or w/e in one location, then the flooding made it trend everywhere.
― Anti-Cop Ponceortium (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 3 June 2020 23:12 (three years ago) link
It's not trending for me, but "BlueLivesMatters" is
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Wednesday, 3 June 2020 23:16 (three years ago) link
yeah, it's gone for me too now
― Anti-Cop Ponceortium (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 3 June 2020 23:17 (three years ago) link
if u dont like the kpop fans flooding racist websites, they took a whole police snitch app down btw, then you have to fight me and im gonna dance on yr ass like bts
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 3 June 2020 23:36 (three years ago) link
Flooding a hashtag with posts that have nothing to do with the hashtag is just fighting fire with fire, it’s a known troll farm tactic and is also used by psyops pros (OK, same diff)

Or all those black squares under #blacklivesmatter.

Aren’t they?
― all cats are beautiful (silby), Thursday, 4 June 2020 01:20 (three years ago) link
I wasn't citing that in disapproval :)
― lukas, Thursday, 4 June 2020 01:20 (three years ago) link

the posts get promoted, they make less sense (and clog up the space for anyone interested in making functional use of the hashtag), fewer people who see them mimic the behavior or redirect it into their own networks - it's like gresham's law but for when you actually want the good money to be driven out by the bad

so Twitter puts the little blue notification for on the app icon if there are any new tweets in your timeline, huh. that's helpful

― j., Thursday, 4 June 2020 08:03 (three years ago) link
I would like for there to be a blue notification dot on the little birdie icon when someone has replied to me or rt me, only then

you guys it's so much worse than any of us thought... I clicked a tweet in a thread and swear to god it took me to a place with many more tweets... tens of thousands of tweets, and each one more horrifying than the last. a veritable living nightmare. i fear that with these reserves at hand, tweets will soon outnumber posts by an insurmountable margin
― lumen (esby), Friday, 5 June 2020 17:16 (three years ago) link

I'll make out just fine if this is so, but can you not play embedded Twitter videos on ILX or third-party sites now, or is there a glitch in my browser? I can still play YouTubes.

I understand OPs not liking to be tagged in threaded replies that aren't directed at them, but get annoyed that this is perpetually framed as a rudeness/etiquette issue as opposed to a shitty interface issue.

I realise Twitter world cups are anathema to some, but in July, Tom Ewing will be running one on tracks from 1990 and is looking for nominations this week. Here's the current list of nominations:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/1/d/1nbefrL-HIkjF0KvPU0ziJddlnx-eEcgAwkliyiiYH8Y/edit?usp=sharing
If any of you are into such things, bung @peoples_pop a tweet with a couple of nominations. Only one of them can be a UK Top 40 hit, but neither has to be. Dance music and hiphop very under-represented at the moment!

It's a promising idea for a sitcom, writer has a minor disagreement on Twitter about something, obsesses about it and ends up destroying his life just because he can't bear to be wrong once. Pretty dark sitcom, in the upside the wage bill for actors would decrease as the show progressed.

might send it to him, see what he thinks
