Rolling Obituary Thread: 2020

I don't know if this has been noted on another thread or not, but I just learned on Facebook that ILX poster Allen Baekeland died this morning. I never met Allen, but we communicated occasionally on here and on Facebook--we had some common background going back to college radio. Allen was also in a lot of bands, the most well known of which I think was Lost and Profound. I couldn't find his ILX handle--it was a lot of Russian letters or something like that.

Thanks, that was it. I searched for 15 minutes last night on various Toronto threads and couldn't find it. I found his real name on a 2005 post.

Looking through his recent posts, he only posted intermittently the past year. He was in the Hendrix-poll thread a couple of times. I liked this post (which tells me he was probably about five years older than I am).

Last post in his own name was in June 2008, first as Ρεμπετολογια was in October, 2016. Hmm. Anyway I always liked his posts, have yet to listen to one of his gigantic playlists to the very end - yet!

When I had a show on CIUT in the late-'80s, I think Allen had gone back to Calgary by then; his future wife, Jen Norfolk, was still there doing a show.

Throughout the late 70s the station held a varied format with punk played alongside jazz, blues, and reggae. But after years of conflict with the Students' Union over programming policy and budget, the SU secretly voted to shut CJSW down without notice to the station's management and membership or the University community. Tipped off to the SU's treachery, station manager Allen Baekeland slept in the studio, unbeknownst to campus officials and the locksmiths sent to perform the midnight shuttering. On the morning of 15 April 1980 he got up and switched on the station as usual, making a point of turning the roof speakers atop MacEwan Hall up full while playing the Pete Seeger song "We Shall Overcome". (In 2009 this incident was immortalized on CD by Calgary band The Bownesians in their song "How Allen Saved the Radio Station"). After two days of peaceful protest with community and media support, and meetings with station executives Bill Reynolds & Grant Burns the new SU executive reconsidered and reversed the closure decision.

rip larry kramer, a tenacious and principled man.

from the start of the aids epidemic, he wouldn’t settle for anything less than serious action at the federal level and a real push for a cure. he wouldn’t accept it being treated as a “niche” issue. this at least is what i took away from my reading of this period—always admired him

watching the nyt larry kramer subhead 'corrections' play out in real time was wild. and they still couldn't fix the real problem because that newspaper is a pile of shit to its core.
