treeship., Saturday, 23 May 2020 03:14 (six years ago)

Is this why Max deleted his Twitter account?

jaymc, Saturday, 23 May 2020 21:16 (six years ago)

we should all delete our twitter accounts, don't need a reason really

silby, Sunday, 24 May 2020 00:58 (six years ago)

Over/under on the box office of a Gawker movie: $275

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Sunday, 24 May 2020 01:06 (six years ago)

k3vin k., Sunday, 24 May 2020 11:47 (six years ago)

Noticed that The Outline also got bought by Bustle and then immediately fired everyone.

El Tomboto, Monday, 25 May 2020 05:57 (six years ago)

two months pass...

A thing:

https://defector.com/

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 28 July 2020 14:27 (five years ago)

More on same:

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/28/business/media/deadspin-staffers-start-defector.html

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 28 July 2020 14:30 (five years ago)

I never would have guessed in a million years that Defector was the name of a sports blog

shout-out to his family (DJP), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 14:31 (five years ago)

good motto

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 14:32 (five years ago)

lol I can't keep track of all of the "new-Gawker" spinoffs

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 14:41 (five years ago)

so Splinter was the "new Gawker" but that's gone now and then has anything taken its place?

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 14:45 (five years ago)

Not really. And unlike Splinter, which was just a lot of the Gawker folks in a new guise but under the old setup, this is wholly independent.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 28 July 2020 14:51 (five years ago)

commenting being a premium feature is innovative stuff, kudos

all cats are beautiful (silby), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 14:55 (five years ago)

It’s only a slight change from old school Gawker commenting, you had to work to be a starred commenter!

let them microwave their rice (gyac), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 15:32 (five years ago)

more independent media = good. I wish them luck.

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 15:34 (five years ago)

we should make new ilx posts cost 25 cents each

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 15:35 (five years ago)

I’d pay it

all cats are beautiful (silby), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 15:45 (five years ago)

I should have to pay for all my old posts

k3vin k., Tuesday, 28 July 2020 16:03 (five years ago)

shocked the 69$/yr tier isn't called "nice"

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 16:07 (five years ago)

if I were in their shoes I might consider one lower tier for just pod content or something. 6 bucks a month may not seem like a lot but they're not the only patron funded game in town

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 16:13 (five years ago)

a $1.50 tier that gives you access to a page with nothing on it but a link to deadspin.com

℺ ☽ ⋠ ⏎ (✖), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 16:25 (five years ago)

the premium commenting feature is a good way to weed out trolls (from barstool)

mozzy star (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 16:26 (five years ago)

I listened to the Magary/Roth pod quite a lot but honestly it was only OK. then again, I'm not sure I would pay for even the pods I like better, almost all of them are just a few people bullshitting for an hour about subjects I just happen to find interesting.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 16:31 (five years ago)

looking forward to the eventual retrospective book, Gawker Dudes: What the Fuck Was Wrong With You?

Lady Antibody (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 16:41 (five years ago)

they should charge extra to hide the comments

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 16:54 (five years ago)

sure I'm going to be called a humorless neoliberal feminist or whatever for this but at some point they could consider changing the name of the "funbag" thing because it's fucking gross

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 17:40 (five years ago)

nah i think that's a perfectly good idea, it's a holdover from cruder days that Magary has otherwise largely renounced and I doubt he has any real deep attachment to the name, so hopefully they will drop it with Defector.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 17:47 (five years ago)

it's in their site copy so doesn't look like it

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 18:11 (five years ago)

what is the funbag thing? like a mailbag segment? and now we'll dive into the....funbag? that doesn't even make sense

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 18:17 (five years ago)

that's what it is

Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 18:18 (five years ago)

one cool thing about the funbag is that no one knows exactly what's in there, it could be anything

The GOAT Harold Land (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 18:19 (five years ago)

heading to the post office. anyone need boobs?

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 18:20 (five years ago)

hold on, let me check the funbag just in case

nope, no boobs in the funbag, go ahead and pick up some please!

The GOAT Harold Land (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 18:21 (five years ago)

Just one giant funbag, centered

The GOAT Harold Land (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 18:22 (five years ago)

$69 is a hard sell when the Athletic is only $50ish (or free with my T-Mobile account)

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 21:46 (five years ago)

I think they're doing pretty different things, and even though I've never subscribed to The Athletic so I can't say 100% for sure, I think Deadspin/Defector has better writers, unless you're just strictly looking for reporting from your sportswriting.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 22:13 (five years ago)

There's a fair bit of overlap in the way they cover sports, the columnists and non-sports stuff seemed like a Deadspin bonus

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 22:21 (five years ago)

i pay $1.25 a month for the athletic, which employs like a million writers

i don't think they have comparable business models at all, i doubt defector is going to get a lot of outside funding. they're just relying on having enough old deadspin fans with money to throw around.

℺ ☽ ⋠ ⏎ (✖), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 22:28 (five years ago)

but the athletic is relying on venture capitalists not getting bored so...

maura, Tuesday, 28 July 2020 22:45 (five years ago)

the athletic is modeled off your local sports page, deadspin always branded itself as the anti-sports page

mozzy star (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 22:51 (five years ago)

oh i don't assume that either model is in any way stable xp

℺ ☽ ⋠ ⏎ (✖), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 22:55 (five years ago)

if all the contributors on that masthead become full-time employees they need like 13,000 annual subscribers at $69 a year to pay them all $50,000 a year, plus a bunch more to pay for the CMS and so on. That'd be a very high conversion rate of the erstwhile pre-ratfucking deadspin audience, but it's also not an objectively large number of customers. Your Kickstarter Sucks, a podcast which I suspect is a more niche taste than "posts about sports", has 3,000+ Patreon subscribers.
